Cadet Oliver Scott made his way down the corridor, nodding slightly to other officers and cadets as he passed them. He had hardly been able to sleep last night from the excitement that was pulsing through his veins. Everything over the last several years had led him to this very day, reporting for duty on his cadet cruise. Textbooks and theory was interesting and Olly had done well in the classroom but people typically don’t join Starfleet out of a love for textbooks and classrooms. Olly was ready to get out and put those book skills to good use in the great big galaxy.

He was currently on his way to check in with the Chief Medical Officer in sickbay and was certain he should have made it there by now. He had studied the schematics and felt like he knew them like the back of his hand, but something wasn’t right. Up ahead he was certain that he had already passed this same bulkhead before and still no sickbay in sight. Finally, he decided to ask someone for directions.

“Excuse me, sir” he called out to a passing Ensign. “I’m sorry but could you direct me to sickbay? I seem to have taken a wrong turn.”

The Ensign stopped and looked the cadet over, “First day cadet?”

Olly grimaced on the inside and nodded.

The Ensign chuckled a little, “Well the good new is you didn’t take a wrong turn, sickbay is right here. The bad news is its two decks above us.”

This time Olly couldn’t suppress the grimace or the bright red color that slowly crept onto his face. He managed to stammer out a thank you to the ensign as he rushed off to the turbolift.

Finally, two decks up, he found himself in the correct place. He stepped through the sickbay doors and quickly regained his composure as soon as he heard the familiar noises and hums of the medical equipment and saw the familiar blue uniforms hard at work. Olly made his way through the department to Dr. Torrirs’ office where he knocked politely and waited to be acknowledged.

OOC: Love the post! Welcome aboard!

OOC: I agree with Ben, awesome post! Welcome to the Challenger and STF! ;)

Obiah’s head shot up at the chime, confusion in the wrinkle of their brow. Had they forgotten a meeting? An appointment? Surely, if it were that important, someone would have commed them by now. In scouring their mind for possibilities as to who stood on the other side of that door, they nearly neglected the thought to welcome them inside. “Come in!” Torrirs called out.

When Oliver stepped into the office, he would find a rather unremarkable room not dissimilar to the offices on Fleet starships. The room consisted of a small desk and chair pushed flush against the back wall, a basic replicator for the occupant’s use, and an LCARS interface. Situated behind the desk, curly hair perched atop their head in a frizzy bun, Obiah sat with their attention divided between the interface and the door. They were somewhat odd in appearance with their dark skin that posed a staggering antithesis to the pale spots lining their body; the mark of vitiligo. Despite their oddity, they emanated a concoction best described as quirky confidence.

“Why, hello there, Cadet!” They greeted when Oliver caught their eye. It was then it hit them. He must be the new medical cadet! They weren’t sure why it had taken so long to connect the dots, but they left that for later speculation. “You must be Oliver Scott,” they rose to their feet, “yes?”

Dr. Torrirs, CMO

Olly smiled politely as he stood in front of the senior officer, “Yes, doctor, I am reporting for duty.”

“It’s about time,” Torrirs smiled, “or perhaps I’m impatient. Regardless, my name’s Doctor Obiah Torrirs.”

He didn’t know much about the doctor and glancing around the office didn’t seem to offer many clues. Perhaps efficiency was something they aimed for, or just privacy. The doctor’s appearance wasn’t particularly shocking to him. While he was used to seeing Trill with opposite coloring patterns he certainly had grown up in a place where “skin was in” and had seen all sorts of shades and interesting markings. At any rate, the doctor’s physical appearance would be irrelevant. If he was going to be successful on his cadet cruise he would need to learn their personality and how they ran sickbay in order to excel and get the best evaluations he could. The interesting contrast between the stark, regulation office and the somewhat quirky appearance of the doctor would perhaps take some figuring out. Hopefully, expectations would come up during this meeting. He also hoped that the doctor would offer to get the boarding physical out of the way at the same time.

Realizing that he had been lost in his own thoughts for a moment, he refocused on the officer standing in front of him, “If I may say so, I am excited to be on board and learn from you.”

OOC: Hi there, just going to add my input as well, great posts! Welcome aboard!

OOC:Three compliments in a few days.. you’re on a role there! ;)

IC:

“Cadet,” Torrirs rose a hand to stop him, “never be afraid to speak your piece, not here. In the sickbay, you are always welcome to say what’s on your mind so long as it’s respectful to those around you.”

Torrirs believed in an alternative approach to mentorship. They did not trust in silencing their cadets, instead they encouraged them to speak up. If they thought something could be done better, and they could prove it, Obiah would hand them the rope to hang themselves by. Medicine was not a science that could be perfected; it is a series of trials and tribulations. They saw no reason to take part in traditional guidance for a practice that defied most of said methods.

“If it is comfortable by you, I’d like to get your physical out of the way, too.” They gestured to the office door. “There should be a plethora of open biobeds; take your pick.”

Obiah would let Oliver lead their conversation. They wanted to gain a sense of who the cadet was; his interests, motives and aspirations for his future in medicine. They, essentially, would be a sounding board to guide the discussion. Otherwise they were nothing more than a spectator to whatever Scott wished to tell them.

Dr. Torrirs, CMO

The cadet was put much more at ease with this initial encounter with the CMO. While he certainly wasn’t a teacher himself, he felt that it was a much better learning environment when students weren’t afraid to ask questions and even make mistakes they could learn from. A policy like that also fostered open communication between coworkers which would make for a much more efficient working environment.

“Thank you doctor, I would love to get the physical out of the way as well,” he stated as he made his way out to one of the biobeds and took a seat.

“We can kill two birds with one stone, as they say.” Torrirs flanked him, snagging a tricorder from the bedside table. It may have saved them the trip to snatch one on their trek over, but like theatre, it was never wise to move a device whose handler might be lurking.

As he waited for the doctor to gather necessary supplies for the physical he pondered what other information he might need to know to do well on this cruise. He supposed that a lot of the “action” seen on the Challenger would be bumps and bruises from cadets doing some dumb things as they find their wings in their particular profession. Perhaps that would be intermixed with the occasional assist on an away mission where a medical opinion was needed.

“Doctor, I wonder, what has been the most interesting situation you’ve been involved in on Challenger?” he asked, deciding the best way to satisfy his curiosity was to check with the expert.

“How do you mean?” Torrirs, curious to which Andorian officer was in before Scott, recalibrated the sensor to suit his iron-rich blood; they doubted they’d get an accurate reading on a scan intended for the Federation’s truest blue bloods. “To be frank, there isn’t much that strays from the ‘norm’ of a starship,” They glanced up from their calibrations, “but then you have to ask yourself what that ‘norm’ is.”

“I’ve seen Cadets go mad; some with the audacity to spit in their superior’s faces and others who speak nothing, but take to the ground. I’m not yet sure which is worse, but both were.. interesting.” They weren’t sure what Oliver was looking to hear; whether he wished history to be written by stories of the Challenger gallivanting the stars or if he preferred the quiet stability of a sickbay tempered with order.

“Is chaos a requirement to have you on my staff?” Frivolity taunted their voice as they initiated his scan.

Dr. Torrirs, a Tad Boring..on the Outside

OOC: If you would include the scan’s results in OOC or in your next post, that would be awesome! :D
