=/\= “Garth to Korczak. We ought to complete my evaluation so you can confirm that I’m not senile yet. I need an evening appointment, can’t leave these first shift cadets unsupervised. As soon as – by the progenitors!” =/\=Pause…
=/\= “Garth to Korczak. Best get this over with soon, for the sake of my lab.” muffled “Put out that fi-!” =/\=
(Lt. J.g. Garth, CSO)
And oddly accented voice issued forth from the commbadge. =/\= I have time now. Come to my office, Lieutenant. =/\=
Korczak, CNS
About an hour passed before Garth showed up at Korczak’s door, looking a bit worse for wear. His hair was even more frazzled than usual and he smelled strongly of chemicals and smoke. Garth pressed the chime once and held it for a moment, causing a longer ring than necessary. Then he leaned on his cane and watched the door expectantly.
When the door slid open, Garth immediately stepped through, hobbling over to the nearest seat and sitting heavily with an audible ‘oof.’ With no introduction, Garth put his gloved hands to his face and pulled his cheeks downward in an expression of exasperation before grumbling, “it’s been a long day counselor. So let’s make this quick.”
(Lt. J.g. Garth, CSO)
Korczak looked blankly at the new Chief of the Science Department and said flatly “Your desire is noted, Lieutenant. As is your seeming inability to understand what ‘as soon as possible’ is… and your disrespect for the time of others. I have been here an hour, Lieutenant. Much like you, I do happen to have other things to do besides wait for you to decide what time is good for you to conduct your formal requirements to be aboard in your assignment. I am aware that bluntness and confrontation are part of your culture, so allow me to say this: If you ever disrespect my time again, I will ensure that the only lab you have access to is on Betazed, surrounded by emotional and telepathic individuals who only want to know how you feel… all the time. Do you understand me, or should I speak more plainly?”
Korczak’s voice never changed tenor, nor did his volume rise above conversational. His face remained expressionless, and his eyes never left the porcine-like features of the new CSO. It seemed that the plain looking human had, perhaps, dealt with Tellerites before.

Garth grunted out a scoff. “As I’m sure you’re well aware, Counselor, my time is neither predictable nor dictated by my preferences, as an academy instructor. If you have an issue with my timeliness for this impromptu meeting, you can take it up with the cadets I was supervising and whose mess I had to clean up.” Garth crossed his arms over his belly as he continued, “surely you cannot expect me to drop everything I am doing to meet you instantly, given that I have cadets to oversee.”
Garth narrowed his small eyes even further as his expression soured. “But, your penchant for threats, lack of sympathy for your fellow senior officers, and apparent negative view of Betazeds as a race are noted. If we can complete the required review of my mental well-being now, I will be on my way and not ‘disrespect’ any more of your precious time than is absolutely necessary.”
(Lt. J.g. Garth, CSO)
Korczak’s response was short and to the point. “This is not an ‘impromptu meeting’, Lieutenant. It is a formal requirement for you to be aboard this vessel. And if you cannot manage your time better or handle the simple task of corralling your Cadets, then maybe we should look for a more competent Science officer to handle the department on board.”
Korczak’s face didn’t show it, but he thoroughly enjoyed meetings with Tellerites. It was refreshing being able to verbally joust back and forth with a being who was not only not going to hide behind some false sense of cultural propriety, but who also was not intimidated by rank. Korczak was also of the opinion that for all their brusqueness and aggressive speech, Tellerites were probably the most honest of the species in the Federation.
