Meredith leant against a console in main engineering, a large steaming cup of tea and plate of biscuits beside her. She was reviewing the data from the recent away team mission when a thought struck her.

=^= Computer, download all specifications, deck plans, and records relating to the USS Potterfield to this station. =^=

As the data began scrolling across the screen, she thumbed her commbadge.

=^= Cadet Paul, report to main engineering. =^=

Grayson stopped mid-scan as the Lieutenant’s voice streamed from his commbadge. The power cells of the hand-held phasers in the armory were holding charge, and other routine maintenance seemed to be well in order. He put the item down and tapped his commbadge:
=^= On my way. =^=

He quickly finished securing the weapons and timed out, taking one last glance behind him to ensure he hadn’t left anything out and left the armory. He exchanged nods with the security officer standing post as he left and walked down the corridor, tool kit in hand. The doors to the turbolift opened almost silently, admitting him. “Deck 5.”

He hummed a quiet melody to himself as the lift rose to the appropriate level and opened. Grayson stepped out, turned left and entered Main Engineering. He stopped momentarily, found the Lieutenant, and made straight for her location, presenting himself before her console. “You wanted to see me, L.T.?”

“Do ye want a biscuit?”

Meredith offered up the plate of assorted biscuits with her spare hand as the Cadet arrived, her attention mostly on the console where she had been working. She nodded her head at the scrolling schematics, work logs, and scan reports.

“This be everything in the Database relating to the USS Potterfield. As ye’ll know we’ve been sent here to see what’s occurred and if possible bring her back in one piece. What I need ye to do, as our resident grease monkey, is to go over her plans, work orders, repair logs, and so on, correlate it with our own scan data and the away team reports, and see if we cannae start to get to the bottom o’ this and get her ticking again.”

Lt Monroe - Chief Engineer

OOC: Sorry for the delay, trying to read up with what’s been going on.

IC:
“Thanks, I do.” Grayson took a biscuit off the proffered tray with one hand, and with the other thumbed his PaDD so as to receive the information Lieutenant Monroe was providing. “I’ll take a look at the data and see what I can come up with.”

He turned on his heel, taking a bite of the biscuit as he made his way to an empty, powered-down work terminal. He activated it, then, after swallowing, said, “Computer, pull up baseline specs for a Monolith-class ship and cross-reference with our most recent scans of the Potterfield. Bridge reported the warp core and reactors are operational, but in stand by mode and I’d like to know why. Also, someone - or something - shut off life support everywhere on that ship, except for deck three. Why?”

OOC: As a reminder to our cadets, there is a wonderful trove of rp related documents (along with our government charters and the like) stored in our library. In this sim, particularly for our more engineering minded cadets, I point to the entry on the Monolith-class: https://www.star-fleet.com/library/bookshelf/tm/monolith.html

IC: The computer popped open the engineering file for the class of ship reasonably quickly, the display showing three dimensional outputs of the ship structure along with information related to her complement and system implementation. It was dull. As dull as a ship can get honestly. Cargo ships with small complements meant to move things from one point to the other, they didn’t make for effective much of anything beyond that.

The Potterfield specifically, was only mildly more interesting. The data that Commander Jackson had provided showed that the ship was transporting biological science samples and other supplies to a research station, but her beacon had her off course. Further data indicated that of the twenty, five crew members had isolated themselves in the sickbay on deck three.

Scans when the Challenger first arrived on the scene also showed the following engineering anomalies: The warp core had been taken offline but was operational, along with weapon systems, communication systems (except for the automated distress beacon), and transporter systems. Power systems were online, but in low power mode, providing power to life support on deck three only. The only way on or off of the Potterfield was site to site transfers from the Challenger or to land a shuttle manually and even then the crew would have a hard time doing much of anything except float around what appeared to be a hothouse of plant life, and something else roaming around in there.

In short, engineering was faced with the following problem: How was a ghost ship, with a quarter crew, filled with plant life, and what exactly was the Challenger going to do about it?
