TAG CE : : : : : : Posted by Lt. Cmdr. Royal Sinclair (Counselor) in CNS Office - Next up, Engineering! TAG CE : : : : : : =/\= Counselor to Lieutenant Gordon. Chief, when you get a moment I would like to speak with you in my office. Thank you. =/\= came the Scottish brogue over the comms. Sinclair was rapidly trying to get the crew’s files up to date with current psych evals; a fact he had mentioned in the staff briefings a few times over the past couple of days. : : : : : : : : : : : : Sinclair, CNS : : : : : : : : : : =^=On my way=^= Gordon replied, A few moments later the chimed rang in the counselor’s office. : : : : : : : : : : -Gordon, CE : : : : : : : : “Come in.” came the familiar voice. Sinclair stood up and walked over to the Chief Engineer and held out his hand. “Lieutenant, good to see you. Please have a seat. Would you like something to drink?” the new Counselor asked and walked over by the desk to the replicator. : : : : : : Gordon limped into the office and took a quick look at Sinclair. He pointed his finger at him. “You know, I could swear I outranked you last week.” He said, trying to sound serious but failing. “Congratulations on your promotion.” : : : : Sinclair laughed out loud and smiled at Gordon. “Thanks. Came as a bit of a shock, honestly. Only reason I took it was so I could order you about.” he said good-naturedly. : : : : : : : : The office was comfortable, with a desk in one corner and then a seating area opposite. A single chair faced away from the desk towards another chair and a long couch surrounding a short table on which sat a small bowl filled with multicolored stones. A low bookcase lined one wall, but sat mostly empty save for a few textbooks and such. The room was not lit as brightly or harshly as the hallway outside, but instead had a warm and welcoming lighting scheme. : : : : : : : : Sinclair looked at Gordon and said with a grin “Bit of a shift from my last office, I know.” : : : : : : : : Lt. Cmdr. Sinclair, CNS : : : : : : Gordon looked around the room. “You office is nicer than mine.” He said with a smile. : : : : : : -Gordon, CE : : : : “I don’t have nearly the traffic… or hardware… coming through mine, Chief.” he said. “I’m grabbing a tea. Get you anything? My treat.” he asked with a friendly smile. : : : : Sinclair, CNS : : “Sure, green tea with honey.” He replied to the offer, taking a seat near the desk. : : -Gordon, CE Sinclair replicated the tea as requested, sat it down in front of Gordon and one in front of himself. Black, lemon, milk. He took a seat opposite Gordon, but not behind the desk. “So. I have the great pleasure of letting you know that, due to the prolonged absence of a Counselor on board, your fitness evaluation is lacking the oft-dreaded psychological evaluation. But in addition to that stellar news, I get to also tell you that your truly is the one to conduct said evaluation.” and he took a drink of his tea. Sinclair, CNS“I always loved these sessions” He replied, a hint of sarcasm in his voice, he too took a drink from his tea.
-Gordon, CE
“I can only imagine.” Sinclair said with a smile. “So let’s begin. How are you settling in to life on the Challenger?”
Sinclair, CNS
Gordon shrugged. “It’s fine, I think my transfer to the ship left skid marks. I had just enough time to throw my bags in my quarters before I joined the away mission with those snakes.” He said, smileing at the memory. “Just how I like it.”
-Gordon, CE
“And how are you feeling about that mission? I know, an odd question coming from me since we were both there. But I’d like to hear your honest assessment of it.”
Sinclair, CNS
Gordon shrugged indifferently. “It was an odd one, but having been in star fleet a long time it comes with the territory. I think i’ve gotten to the point where nothing surprises me, I just kind of roll with it.”
-Gordon, CE
“And what about the loss of Cadet Bills?” he asked.
Sinclair, CNS
Gordon nodded, he knew it this was coming. “Not the first person I’ve lost under my command, and won’t be the last. Still, It never seems to get easier.” He said with a sad sigh.
-Gordon, CE
“If it gets easier, you and I have a lot more to talk about I would think.” Sinclair said with a tone of understanding. Bills’ loss had effected him, too. But as too many officers failed to remember, losing people you served with was part of the job. “Anything pressing since? Any problems sleeping, eating, concentrating… that sort of thing?” Sinclair asked.
Sinclair, CNS
Gordon shook his head. “No, nothing has changed, this isn’t my first rodeo. Still, I hate writing those letters.” He looked at Sinclair. “What about you? You were in charge until I showed up. Was he your first lost?”
-Gordon, CE
Sinclair nodded solemnly and took a drink of his tea. “He was.” and he set the cup down. “I don’t know if you know this, but I have only ever served on the Challenger. She was my Cadet cruise. Promoted to Lieutenant JG and made Security Chief when I graduated. Bills was my first loss. I wish, but I doubt, he will be the last. That was the hardest letter I ever wrote. I don’t relish the thought of writing another.” he said.
Sinclair, CNS
“It doesn’t get any easier, trust me.” He replied sympathetically. “Do you feel like you failed him?” He asked, knowing that it was a common feeling.
-Gordon, CE
Sinclair shook his head. “Not at all. I know he had been trained well, both in the Academy and on board. And I know that in the circumstances, he did what he had to do to help his fellow crew. I’m sorry it ended the way it did. But as you said, not the first person to be lost… and won’t be the last, unfortunately.” and then he smiled and shook his head. “And that is enough about me. This particular time is about you.” HE tapped a few notes on the PaDD, and then said “How do you feel about being on an Academy ship rather than a main fleet position?”
Sinclair, CNS
“Well, long story short, this is my first ship as Chief Engineer. I was a pilot mainly, during the evacuation of Romulas, some rogue romulans attacked the convoy I was protecting. I was severely injured during the attack. Instead of retiring, I retrained into engineering. After graduating from school, I was assigned as the Assistant Chief Engineer on the Intrepid. I spent a few years there before I took on this assignment.” Gordon explained.
-Gordon, CE
“And how does being an Engineer compare to being a pilot?”
Sinclair, CNS
Gordon laughed. “There isn’t much comparison. I am essentially medically disqualified from most piloting situations. I can pilot the ship, or a basic shuttle craft, but dangerous missions or anything like that, not gonna happen. I was essentially a fighter pilot. When I couldn’t do that anymore I had to choose a different career path. This was by backup option at the academy.” He sighed in remembrance. “Good old days.”
