Meredith took a moment to make sure her uniform was as crease free as possible after the transit flight. Her unruly mop of fiery red hair she could do little about, but she’d attempted to tame it by pulling the curls into a loose pony tail and hoping for the best.

She pushed the door chime, and with one last forlorn tug at her hair, waited to enter.

The turbo lift on the Bridge opened and a man exited, wearing the Red tunic of Command. Turning left, he headed towards her carrying what looked like a brown paper bag. Seeing her, which wasn’t hard considering the short distance, he smiled. He was older, in his 50’s perhaps but clearly still fit and full of energy while is hair had begun to get more than a few streaks of aging.

“Good morning, Lieutenant.” He offered as he reached her. Clearly on his collar were the four pips of a Captain. “Have I kept you waiting long?”

Captain Rhodes, CO

“Not at all Sir” replied Meredith, her gentle lifting accent on the L’s And R’s betraying her Hebridean heritage.

She stood slightly awkwardly at attention, aware that when she drew herself up she had a good couple of inches on her new Captain and trying not to draw attention to the fact. Her broad shoulders and athletic build made her seem larger than her listed height and she often felt slightly awkward around people as a result.

“Lieutenant Monroe, reporting aboard Sir”

“Oh good,” Felix said, his English accent sounding pleasantly surprised. “I thought you might be my new Boiler Monkey going by your height and hair. Come on in.” His doors opened and Felix lead the way into his Ready Room. It wasn’t big, the Discovery Class ships never being designed to be spacious.

A desk fronted by two chairs, a sofa, side table and two chairs and bookshelf filled the small room, and Felix approached the work desk and topped one of the chairs. “Take a seat if you like, Lieutenant Monroe, cookie?” He held out the bag, in which were an assortment of various flavoured biscuits. “Choose one, I insist.”

Meredith followed the Skipper, ducking slightly under the lintel of the door by reflex. She lowered herself into the seat opposite him.

“Don’t mind if I do, nearly time for elevenses after all.” She said, selecting a plain looking oat biscuit. She took a nibble, wistfully wishing for some tea to dunk it in. The Old Man seemed a decent sort, even if he was a sassenach.

“It’s good to be back on the auld girl I must say, I did a Cadet cruise aboard her myself, a fine ship, once you get to know her ways.”

Lt Monroe - CHIEF Boiler Monkey

Felix had narrowed his eyes slightly and paid attention to the biscuit she chose. Oatmeal. Oatmeal was traditional, even old fashioned. It wasn’t particularly adventurous but could always be depended on to do what it was supposed to, and most people liked them. Sometimes oatmeal could be paired with another flavor to make something amazing, but at the end of a bad day, oatmeal was always the best to sit down with and relax.

The tall, sturdy Hebridean redhead surprised him with her oatmeal choice, but he rolled up the paper bag and put it to one side. “Yes, I saw it on your file. It’s one reason your name was put forward for the position, Munroe. What kind of Tea do you like? I expect with a term like elevenses you aren’t a fan of the black gold.”

Captain Rhodes, CO

“Breakfast tea, hot, milk, two sugars, pint mug.” Meredith looked slightly surprised as her usual replicator order sprouted almost automatically from her lips.

“Sorry Sir, I had been thinking exactly at that moment how much I could murder a good cuppa.”
