USS Challenger

Cargo bay 3. Hydroponics experiment.

Catt sighed. The enginneers had done a fantastic job assembling, anchoring and providing power to the hydroponics units. They were both running smoothly as they had for the last two months. There had been some petty pilfering of the fruit she had meant to start but as this had left her with insufficent seeds and the trees would of taken two years to mature in any case she had opted not to plant them. She cheched the temperature of the nutrient solution and it was still perfect. She collected samples of the vegtables, grains and berries that had reached maturity and moving to the science station she had personally set up subjected them to a battery of tests to insure they were healthy. Fit to eat and in no manner suffered from any fungus or parasites.

“Start recording. Science log. Hydroponics experiment #3
The experiment has succeeded in producing a edible nutricious yeild. However I must count this as a failure as the projected disaster survivers would of suffered permanent damage to health ten days ago. While a better result than experiments #1 and #2 forcing fast maturation is still not viable. Pending medical improvements in treating toxic exposure that can not be expexted within the next twenty years this just doesn’t work. “, she sighed heavily. Pinched the bridge of her nose and continued. “I will of course look for alternatives. But I must admit that my projections do not lend much hope of improement. If this research is any use to anyone in time to come....end recording.”

She smoothed her uniform and plucked a shed bit of fur off her sleexe., start recording. Personal log. Cadet Catt Bennet.
Accelerated growth is a dead end. If I could wait 20 years I might see improvements that would make my research viable. But thats not possible. Organ degradation progresses at a increased rate. I just don’t have the time. My cousin contacted me. She is upset. The Matriarchs have agreed with my reasons for refusing the marriage my aunt arranged for me. So she not has to marry him. He is by all seeming a perfect specimin. Her own choice would likely end up with both being miserable. End log.”,
She shook her head then smiled. The crew would eat fresh foods tonight. That she herself was a pure carnivore didn’t bother her. Her work had never been for her own benefit. So she made the adjustments so that the food would be harvested. Sent a call to the logistics officer informing them of a need to collect the vegtables. She made small gift wrapped parcels for the senior officers and a fewothers she was close to and prepared to hand deliver them.
