“What about them made you judge them to be ineffective?” Viveca asked, leaning forward slightly, “The main reason I’m asking is there are multiple approaches to helping someone through a mental crisis and knowing where you’re coming from in light of those past sessions can help me better help you if down the road you need it during your time on the Challenger.”

“That’s… A really good question.” J.C. paused a moment. “The biggest thing is that despite everything absolutely 100% without a shadow of a doubt saying I wasn’t to blame, despite everyone… My folks, the investigators, the counselors… Saying that it wasn’t my fault… No one was able to convince me of that, so I’d stop blaming myself.” He scoffed, a slight smirk on his lips.
“Maybe the only thing the counselors were ‘bad’ at was not getting through this thick skull of mine.”

“Survivors’ guilts is handily a tricky thing to treat and very common in the service as you might expect,” Viveca replied, “I’ll keep in mind if we have any further sessions. The only thing I have left is you might catch me observing you or others in your daily mundane tasks. The reason behind it isn’t anything concerning, it’s purely for my own notes. I’m a human counselor, so while I have my psychiatry background and can identify what medications might help with certain illnesses in the brain, the best way I’ve found is to observe people sort of in their natural habitat so when something changes, I can spot it easier. I am not telepathic like some of my fellow counselors, so I have to go by observation and what people tell me.”

J.C. was actually a little surprised. He half-expected the Counselor to press, to dig deeper like all the other ones had. And he got the feeling it wasn’t from a lack of concern or compassion.
He felt like she was letting him choose when to broach it. He wasn’t ready… At least not right now. But maybe…
J.C. nodded at her statement. “I suppose it makes sense that you’d want to check folks out in their every day. Especially us cadets. We’re unknowns afterall.” He managed a faint smirk. “I probably will be the most mundane person you’ll meet… Unless a particularly interesting engineering conundrum comes along.”

“Great, so unless you have anything else to mention, we can end the session here. If you ever feel you want to talk something out, my door is usually open,” Viveca remarked with a smile.
