USS Challenger

Cadet Nala Shai’Mori t’Liriena’s First Steps Aboard

The shuttlecraft settled onto the deck with a soft metallic thump, the vibration running up through Nala’s paws. Her ears twitched, catching the shift in ambient frequencies as the engines powered down.

A moment later, the hatch hissed open.

No welcoming party.
No officer waiting with a padd.
Just the cool, slightly ionized scent of starship air drifting in.

Exactly as her orders had stated.

Nala tightened her grip on her satchel and stepped out into Shuttle Bay Two of the USS Challenger. The cavernous bay was alive with motion cargo handlers weaving between crates, technicians running diagnostics on a runabout, the low hum of the containment field shimmering against the open space beyond.

No one paid her much attention.

A few glanced her way the silhouette of a Caitian always drew the eye but everyone had their tasks, their routines, their own world already in motion.

Nala tapped her datapad.

PERSONNEL INSTRUCTIONS

Cadet Nala Shai’Mori t’Liriena
Report to Deck 7, Section C
Room 7C-14 Cadet Quarters

Clear. Logical. Efficient.
She appreciated Vulcan-style directives.

Her tail flicked once as she oriented herself toward the corridor.

New ship. New rhythms. Remember slow your pace. Breathe.

She repeated her grounding technique, letting the steady cadence calm her pulse.

With a final deep breath, Nala left the shuttle bay and stepped into the Challenger proper.

She walked quietly, trying not to let her excitement push her into a full sprint. Every few steps her ears rotated, collecting sounds:
• Turbo-lift doors whooshing open
• Console chirps
• Distant voices
• The subtle rumble of the warp core far below

Her tail curved with interest, then flicked anxiously.

“One step at a time, Nala,” she whispered. “Don’t think ahead of the moment. Just follow the path.”

Her datapad chimed softly at each junction, guiding her through branching corridors and turbo-lifts.

Deck 7.
Section C.
Quarters 7C-14.

A few crew members passed her some doing double-takes at the sight of a young Caitian cadet with an oversized satchel but she merely dipped her head politely and kept moving. Small talk was still difficult until she adjusted to new people, and her mind was already running too fast… imagining the labs, the genetic sequencers, the research assignments and the Vulcan who would soon be her department head.

Calm. Calm. One step. Then another.

Her quarters door slid open with a soft chirp the moment she approached.

7C-14.
Her first space aboard the Challenger.

It wasn’t large standard cadet quarters but it was clean, self-contained, and hers.

A single bed built into the wall.
A desk with an unassigned terminal.
A narrow viewport looking out into the stars.

The sight of that window pulled a soft, involuntary purr from her throat.

So many stars… so many worlds with their own genetic stories.

She placed her satchel carefully on the bed.
Opened it slowly.
With deliberate reverence, she removed her Shai’Mori-patterned cloth and her crystal stylus her one personal, permitted item and set the stylus neatly on the desk.

Her tail eased into a gentle sway.

She exhaled deeply.

“This is where it begins.”

Cadet Nala
