“Commander Th’kylret forwarded your file for my review. I am temporarily assisting NE Tartaglia with the administrative tasks of the Engineering department while our Chief Engineer is in transit to the Challenger.” He slid over a PADD. “Your duty schedule for this week.”

“Thank you, sir.” J.C. picked up the PADD, looking it over. A full schedule, but not unreasonable. Keeping busy would help him keep his mind off the nervousness of his first actual shipboard assignment.

“Would you have any recommendations for my off-duty time, sir? Besides finishing up my normal Academic studies, of course.”

“Socialize with your crewmates. A crew that engages in recreation together and is comfortable in informal situations as a group typically has a higher efficiency on-duty.”

J.C.’s expression was mildly surprised. “That’s… A bit of advice I wasn’t quite expecting to hear. But you do make it make sense. Thank you, sir.” He hadn’t done much socializing at the Academy proper; always threw himself into his work or studies… But…

He supposed being stuck on a ship together in the middle of deep space was a bit different carton of stem bolts.

“I noticed that the ship seemed to be gearing up for something, sir. Seemed like a lot of equipment coming on-board. Big mission coming up?”
