Commander Atob Th’kylret sat on his shuttle and waited to be transported over to the Challenger. He preferred using a shuttle to beaming directly over to the ship. He liked to look at the stars. It also gave him time to think. He looked over the PADD and tapped his foot, pondering over his assignment. Why the Challenger and why now? He thought to himself and scratched his chin. He knew there was already a full compliment of Senior staff on the ship and, given his background, suspicions would be raised immediately as to his presence on the ship. He sighed and his antennae wiggled. Completely lost to his thoughts time went quickly and the shuttle docked with the Challenger. He placed the PADD in his duffle bag, picked it up, stood, thanked the pilot and left the shuttle. He breathed in and smiled slightly as he stepped onto the ship and made his way straight to the Captain’s Office. It wasn’t long till he stepped onto the bridge, ignoring the entire bridge crew he walked over to the ready room. He pressed the chime and waited patiently.

Commander Atob “Toby” Th’kylret (XO)

“Enter!” Aaron called from where he stood in the middle of a holo representation of a stellar nursery. He had a large PADD in his hand and was taking notes as he move through the holo.

Looking up from his notes, Aaron noticed the Andorian standing in the doorway as it slid open.

“Commander Th’kylret I presume.” Aaron moved over to his desk where with a few taps he dismissed the holo. “I hope your trip to the Challenger was uneventful.”

Capt Foley - CO

OOC: Given Mika was still XO pre-sim, I’m playing this as though he’s been assigned as special ‘mission’. I can then do the takeover to XO during the sim.
IC:

Toby smiled as he stepped in, he raised an eyebrow at the holo. The nature of his work meant that he was always alert, he remember a teaching from his mentor every detail matters. Toby felt that it wasn’t a particularly profound teaching, but he took it seriously none the less.
“Thank you Captain Foley, it was sufficiently...... boring.” He found humour put people at ease. Intelligence work always seemed to put people on edge.
“I’m here to report for duty Captain. Please, call me Toby.” It was a nickname his fellow cadets had given him and it had stuck.

Commander Atob “Toby” Th’kylret (XO)

“As you wish,” Aaron said as he leaned against his desk. “Command gave me a heads up about your arrival, but they were a bit lacking on the details of what your mission is. Only that we were to accommodate you as much as we can.

“I’ll be honest Commander, this is atypical for us. The Challenger Is first and foremost a training ship. We don’t operate on the front line, and classified missions are not something that we do. So we are her to assist you, but I’m not sure how we are able to help.”

Capt Foley - CO

Atob nodded and folded his arms.
“Oh I’m in complete agreement Captain. My assignment here is..... most unusual to say the least.” He paused for a moment, trying to think what he could say. He loved Intelligence work, but it could be frustrating at times. Especially when the situation was sensitive, like this current situation. It didn’t endear you to your fellow Starfleet Officers. Atob sucked in a breath and then continued.
“I obviously can’t say much. What I can say is that I’m more of a casual observer. I’m here to see how you run things and report back to Command. I don’t like this anymore than you do, my time could be better used elsewhere. I’ll do my best to stay out of the way.”Atob hoped that was a good enough explanation but he doubted it would be. He prepared himself for the barrage of questions and objections.

Commander Atob “Toby” Th’kylret (XO)

Aaron’s mouth thinned to just a line, that was the last thing he wanted to hear. The last thing he needed was an observer reporting his every decision back to Command. He wasn’t worried about his position, if they really had an issue he would be gone in a heartbeat. Especially with a ship full of cadets. So what were they looking for instead.

“Is there any thing in particular that you are interested in observing?”

Capt Foley - CO

Atob noticed the reaction. He knew it wouldn’t go down well. He really hated this part.
“Nothing major really. Command have heard good things and they just want an outsider perspective. Nothing serious or anything to be concerned about at all really.” He replied intentionally being vague. It was a half truth really. The best lies were, for the most part, half truths.

Commander Atob “Toby” Th’kylret (XO)

“mmhmm,” Aaron replied trying to keep a straight face. Whenever they said there was nothing to worry about, that was when you had something to worry about. But at the same time, it wasn’t worth trying to figure out what they were chasing. He had a ship to run, and in the end, they would tell him once they finally decided to take some sort of action.

“Well, do you have any questions for me, or about the Challenger so far?”

Capt Foley - CO

Foley’s response was to be expected and he forced himself to not sigh. It wouldn’t have been a good look.
“Well, I’d like to know what your pass out rate. What were the number of cadets that graduated and what is the bar for passing?” He asked making sure to take notes.

Commander Atob “Toby” Th’kylret (XO)

Aaron stood up and moved around his desk, sliding into the waiting chair. He deposited the PADD he had been holding onto the stack on the left side of his desk before bringing up the desks built in display.

“Once we get past the first week of their assignment to the Challenger, we are sitting at around 87% completion rate. Not totally unsurprising as you already have to be in the top percentage of the class to be granted a ship board posting prior to graduation, and because our typical patrol area is one of the further from Earth, we usually tend to have the more self sufficient cadets. Typically the only cadets who are rotated back for further training are the ones who are not able to learn from their mistakes.

“My guidelines for graduation are pretty straight forward. First, are they able to effectively apply the knowledge they’ve gained during their time at the Academy to a real world situation. Second, when they do make a mistake, are they able to learn from that mistake and grow as an officer. Third, that they pass all of their shipboard qualifications. The goal is simple, I want them to be able to walk into their next assignment, be able to jump right in, and to have the knowledge not to be a liability to their new crew mates.

“As for the number of graduates, you can see them right here. We just rotated off our last class, and received a new batch of cadets during our last stop at Earth.”

Capt Foley - CO

Toby nodded as he listened, keeping a mental note of what Foley was saying. He would make notes later. That list of graduates would be interesting… very interesting indeed.
“Perfect, thank you Captain. Would you mind sending that list over to me? Purely for audit purposes.” He asked politely with a disarming smile.

Commander Atob “Toby” Th’kylret (XO)

Aaron’s eyes narrowed, trying to figure out what game he was playing, but there was little risk. The list wouldn’t be hard for the Commander to get by himself anyways. With a couple of taps, he forwarded a copy.

“Anything else you may need?”
