Black hair the color of starless space, was pulled back in a French braid down Acadia’s back as she took to the hallway. The ball last night had been amazing. She had seen the CO and XO but had stayed away. No point in mixing business with pleasure. And as the ‘new crewmember’ she didn’t want them to feel obliged to entertaining her or seeing to her having a good time. She had danced a few dances and had a drink or two and retired, content she had done her duty.

Here she was, now walking down the halls of The Challenger, heading to meet the CO. Her dark eyes were bright as she smiled and nodded to those she passed. The uniform pips would give her rank away and the color, her station. Surely, by the time she got to Engineering later, word of her arrival would be there already.

The computer had said the Captain was in his Ready Room. Stepping onto the bridge she nodded to the Lieutenant on duty and turned towards her destination. A final tug down of her tunic, she palmed the pad to let the chime announce her arrival.

“Enter!” Aaron called out from behind his desk. There was a stack of PADDs on his desk that he was reviewing. A mug sat on his desk, though it looked like it hadn’t been touched in a while. Even after all this time, there was still only a few decorations around his Ready Room, mostly a few books on the shelf behind his desk.

“So good news or bad news?” Aaron asked without looking up from his current PADD.

Acadia smiled. The laid back unstuffy room gave her more confidence in her be Captain. She gave a slight smile as he spoke and responded. “I guess time will tell, Sir. Though I think I can confidently say good news.”

A lopsided grin would greet him when he looked up. The new engineering Chief, while not strictly standing at attention, was standing with hands at her sides as the door closed with a soft whoosh behind her.

Raising her head slightly to glance into the coffee cup, she finished with, “Though if you were awaiting a warm refill, sadly is bad news unless your replicator is sufficient. In which case, I’m happy to refill the mug and change that to good news as well.” The twinkle of light in her eyes let him know that while she was light hearted, she was also respectful.

“Oh?” Aaron said absentmindedly looking up. He blinked a few times at the new person standing in front of him as he processed what she said.

“Unfortunately I’ve had to settle for the replicator for the last few weeks. My normal resupply of fresh coffee beans was delayed by customs, so we had to leave spacedock without it.”

Setting down the PADD he had been working on, he pushed himself back from the desk and stood up. “I’m hoping that the good news you are bringing is that you are my new Chief Engineer.”

Acadia smiled and nodded. “Yes, Sir. In that, I can say it’s good news. I’m sorry about your coffee. I do have some darker, heavier teas with me of you would like to try some. I never acquired the taste for coffee but sometimes soothing teas just don’t cut it.”

She moved to close the gap between herself and his desk as the Captain stood up. “But I’m guessing that my being the new Chief is not what prompted the ‘is it good news or bad news’ when I came in. May I ask what news, either way, you are waiting for?”
