Denali walked into the Sickbay area and gazed around looking at the surroundings he would need to be familiar with. It was absolutely stunning and beautiful. More than that though, he thought about the different species he would be given the opportunity to treat and care for. For Denali, life was precious. He couldn’t wait to meet his commanding officer.

He pushed the doorbell for the main office. He then waited for the response.

The door slid open with a quiet whoosh. A woman, mid to late 30s, stood from the desk chair as the door opened. She had curly more brown than auburn hair to her shoulders. In the lights of the medical bay and the bounce of the curls, the auburn highlights made her hair seem to have flickers of fire.

Her direct all black gaze marked her as Betazoid. Over her medical uniform was a lab coat. The other most significant thing about her was a large white and tan Siberian Husky at her side. It wore a vest that said Service Dog. I am working, please don’t distract me.

“You must be,” she searched her memory for the new cadets, “Cadet Denali Neddleberg. I am Lt. Rox, your chief medical officer. Please come in and have a seat.” She waved to the chair opposite her.

OOC: Welcome aboard! I’m excited to get to know your character. Make sure to sign off your posts and replies with your character name and position like I have done above.

OOC: I am out of practice for its been years for me since I became aware of this fantastic experience.

OOC: I understand. I took a few years off as well and had to relearn when I returned.

Cadet Neddleberg sat down and looked at his new chief medical officer. “Lt. Rox, it is a pleasure to meet you. A service dog, it’s really quite beautiful. I hope that my service aboard this vessel will be fitting to its name. I am willing to learn as much as possible and if there is anything that I can help with, I am always just a chime away.”

The CMO glanced down with a grin at the dog. “Ril is excellent at his job, and a great companion.” She turned back to focus on him. “Tell me about your specialty? What area of medicine did you focus on?”

Lt. Rox, Chief Medical Officer

“Well, I specialized in physiology and medicinal practices. I am also able to learn other areas as time permits. Whatever and wherever I am needed, I am ready to assist. Thank you for this opportunity.”

Cadet Denali Neddleberg, Doctor

“You’ve earned it, Cadet. Never forget that. You’ve worked hard to get here,” Rox smiled. “Tell me, why medicine? Why Star Fleet and not practice in your home world?”

Lt. Rox, Chief Medical Officer

“Well, to be honest, Lt. Medicine is very important to me. I want to see people thrive right where they are at. Star Fleet, I get to meet plenty of different species and such and learn so much more than if i stayed on my home world. I love the idea of being in space and the many challenges that we as officers may have to face. My goal is to help everyone I can by being the best medical officer I can be.”

“That’s an admiral goal. And you will certainly get plenty of opportunities to work towards it,” Rox said. “Tell me Cadet, what do you think you are strongest in, in the medical field?”

Lt. Rox, Chief Medical Officer

“Well Lt, one of my stronger assets is one you can’t learn from any textbook. I feel very deeply and it gives me determination when I am treating patients. There is one particular event in my life that I am often reminded of, and that is when my mother was on her deathbed. I was just a child but it’s what drove me to become an officer in Starfleet. I needed to know I did not have to let anybody else feel that again. My reality forced me to learn that I could not stop death. My mother meant the world to me and I miss her more than words can express. She was a strong woman.”

Ilena nodded, “That is the hardest lesson to learn for any medical professional. Unfortunately, it is a necessary one. Where do you think you are the weakest in your medical practice?”

Lt. Rox, Chief Medical Officer

“Well my weakest area is definitely wearing my heart on my sleeve. I can definitely overfeed my emotions but I’m working on that.”

Ilena nodded, “That is certainly something to be aware of. I find it is more of a help, it is a mark of an excellent doctor. It can also burn you out faster than anything else.”

“What about actual physical skills. Where do you feel you need more practice? Surgery, diagnostics, peds?”

Lt. Rox, Chief Medical Officer

“I believe that diagnostics is very important, even if I feel well trained in the area. To be honest, all those areas are important to work on. Just know that I’m here to be the best I can, and the only way to do that is hard work.”

Cadet Denali Neddleberg

Ilena smiled gently. “That is aall true, Neddleberg; however, I am asking you to give a straight forward answer. Constant training and hard work is necessary, but once you leave the Challenger you will be on your own. You will have a department head of course. But the missions have the potential to be much more serious. So if you were alone, with no one to ask for a second opinion, what Medical situations would you feel unsure in, or wish you had had more training? Your assignment on Challenger is the time to ask.” Ilena couldn’t tell if Neddleberg was simply that confident or only attempting to seem to be. Ilena did not want to miss any area to help prepare her cadets for service after graduation.

“Well, knowing what the best procedure and such to use and doing it skillfully. That’s what I’m going to work on mastery while I’m here.”
