As the turbolift descended, Pilar thought about the tasks ahead. Engineering needed to be airtight. The probes, while the centerpiece of the mission, were secondary to the lives she was responsible for. She would help ensure that every system, every contingency, had been considered. The lower decks were always a point of concern, where things could go wrong, unnoticed by the hustle of the bridge.

The doors opened, and Pilar strode into the corridor, she entered the main Engineering deck and was immediately greeted by the hum of machinery and the sharp scent of warp core fumes. Lieutenant Winterbourne was on the bridge but she expected him at any moment.

Halcyone, XO

He followed the XO into main Engineering only moments later.

Whilst many on the bridge disliked the clutter and chaos of Engineering, he found solace in it. The oil, warp core fumes and loud noises almost felt like a comfort blanket compared to the calm of the bridge. In Engineering, there was always something that either needed to be fixed or needed it’s effiency improving. There was always something worth messing with and always something to keep your hands busy with.

Scott paused on his way through Engineering, taking a few seconds to discuss with a NE about recalibrating a sensor on one of the other decks and how to know if it needed replacing completely. It took just a few moments, but he wanted to ensure that the USS Challenger was running with peak efficiency. He took pride in his work, and he wanted to ensure that all Engineering officers did the same.

Eventually, he reached the XO and offered her a smile. “Commander” he addressed her formally. “Welcome to Engineering. I’m sure you’ve been down here a fair few times, but I’ve definitely made a few small changes” he chuckled. “Anything to keep this beauty running as good as she can” he commented, still smiling whilst he patted the wall next to him.

Lieutenant Winterbourne - Chief Engineer

Pilar turned as Lieutenant Winterbourne approached, offering him a brief nod in return.

“Changes, huh?” she said, her voice steady but curious. “I hope none of them are going to surprise me when we’re in the middle of a crisis.” She glanced at the warp core, always glowing with potential energy, before meeting his eyes again. “What’s the status on the probes? They need to be ready for deployment in less than twelve hours. Anything I need to worry about?”

Her gaze shifted briefly to the crew bustling around them, everyone focused on their tasks. “And I don’t just mean the obvious. What’s the real state of Engineering right now?”

He offered a laugh.

“Commander, scouts honour. Your ship won’t go boom midway through an emergency” he responded to her concerns, still with a smile on his face. He noted her more serious demeanour and shifted his own to match. “I’ve got a few ensigns running scans on the probes as we speak, just making sure they’re all good to go. I’m hoping to have some results in the next few minutes” he commented.

“In terms of the state of Engineering? We’re on edge, Commander” he responded to her final question. “I’ve started intergrating with this team and I trust them to keep the ship running, but we’re all in agreement we know very little about this mission and it’s definitely got a few of the team concerned”.

Lieutenant Winterbourne - Chief Engineer

Pilar crossed her arms, as she processed Winterbourne’s answer. It wasn’t exactly comforting to hear the team was on edge, but then, she couldn’t blame them. The whole ship was a hive of anticipation, people keeping their heads down and tackling one unknown variable after another. It was like trying to steer through a storm without knowing what was out there beyond the ship’s hull.

She studied him for a moment, gauging his confidence, or maybe just his resolve. Winterbourne had a grounded presence she could rely on, and he didn’t sugarcoat things, which she appreciated.
“We’ll need every hand at the ready,” she said finally, voice low. “The team doesn’t have to know every detail, but I want them clear-headed and ready to adapt when the time comes. Any doubts, they bring them to you. And you,” she added with a pointed glance, “you bring them to me.”
The steady sound of the warp core pulsed in the background, a reminder of the immense energy at their fingertips. In the right hands, it was a marvel of controlled power; in the wrong ones, well…she didn’t like thinking about the alternative.
For a split second, Pilar’s gaze flicked to the console where the probe diagnostics were still running. Twelve hours seemed like an eternity and no time at all, especially if they didn’t know what they were getting into. She pushed the thought aside, forcing her focus back onto Winterbourne.
“If you get any unusual readings, flag them immediately,” she said. “I don’t want us scrambling to fix something preventable when we’re in the thick of it.” Her tone softened just a fraction. “We don’t have the luxury of being reckless, not with this mission.”
