A tall but lanky Trill haphazardly navigated his way through corridors and turbo-lifts of the Challenger. Not yet adjusted to the specific type of hustle and bustle on a active star-ship he moved a bit slowly and awkwardly. A fact unaided by his head being craned down at his tricorder somewhat frantically tapping at the buttons. After more then a few wrong turns the distracted young man found himself standing before the doors to the med bay. Taking a moment to stow his tricorder and straighten his cadets uniform he began to mutter to himself a bit.

“Reporting to LT. Yancy, should mention his guide to cultural sensitivity. No that’s normal Starfleet reading, his adaptive Immunotherapy paper is more impressive. Though is that trying too hard? Should I mention having been a initiate? That brings up my dismissal though, my academy grades show my medical worth however and …” Cutting himself off from his mumbling the cadet took a deep breath closing his eyes for moment. Hoping no one over heard all that as he attempted to settle the anxiety within. Producing a small flat stone from his pocket and soothingly rubbing it along his fingers as he stepped into the med-bay.

“Medical Cadet Sozenn reporting in Lieutenant. Your papers are quite informative sir. ” He presented himself to the lieutenant a bit rigidly, winching internally a bit at the possible awkwardness of the last line.

Vincent was filing the latest reports on the cadets and was about to start updating the medical journal he was keeping when a Cadet stepped into the med bay. “At ease, Cadet,” he said, welcoming the distraction with a smile. “Otherwise, your first lesson will be how to administer pain relief for a strained neck,” he joked, easing the tension.

“I haven’t had the chance to review the latest crew intake yet, Cadet. Why don’t you tell me about yourself?” he asked, a slight fib since Vincent preferred hearing it directly from the source. He always believed in getting to know his team members personally.

Bejal seemed put somewhat at ease by the lieutenants joke gaining a slight smile. His response was still somewhat rigid. “I studied medicine and life sciences first on Trill before applying to Starfleet. At the academy I took care to brush up on my xenobiologly knowledge along with my core studies. ” He took a pause here, glancing down at the small stone he was rabidly rubbing between his fingers. With a sigh he finally relaxed his shoulders a bit before pulling up a nearby stool. He continued with a bit of a unsure laugh.

“That wasn’t quite at ease was it? Pardon my nerves sir, new beginnings and all that. I have always had a curious mind and putting that mind to work in Starfleet has always been one of two dreams of mine. The other was more cultural in nature I suppose but not one I was able to make happen. In old earth parlance I suppose you could say I have something to prove. If only to myself. I look forward to learning all I can from you sir. “

Vincent appreciated the cadet’s candid answers; it was reassuring to see that the Academy hadn’t extinguished the spirit of the new generation of officers. “I look forward to imparting my knowledge to you as well, and I’m certain there will be times when you’ll teach me a thing or two. It’s not true that you can’t teach old targs new tricks,” he chuckled warmly.

“Do you have any family in Starfleet or any medical professionals in your family?” he asked, wanting to gain a deeper understanding of the cadet’s background.

“Not Starfleet but my father is a doctor albeit more on the research side of things. My mother holds a mid level position in the Ministry of Science. Technically also a doctor but I doubt you were meaning applied mathematics.” Bejal chuckled to himself here a bit, slipping the stone he’d been rubbing into his pocket as his anxiety subsided a bit.

“I think both of them hoped I would remain on Trill. They had some nerves about me joining Sarfleet, but its the front-lines of both discovery and medicine. They understood that at least.”

“Having support from home is the foundation for any long-term career in Starfleet, and while we may serve for a very long time we will always need family to go back to whether its the ones we were born into or the ones we chose along the way. I am glad they support your decision and I am sure you will make them proud.” Vincent began picking out a few different instruments and medicine before placing them on the counter top. “Now a little pop quiz, why don’t you tell me what these seven objects are and what they are used for?

Bejal smiled at Vincet’s comment and stepped towards the countertop. Starting with the most obvious of the instruments he picked them up one by one. “This is of course a medical tricorder. A more specialized instrument then your standard tricorder. The removable scanning probe allows for a greater range of movement over the subject. The Starfleet models are always a little fancier then the slimmed down training models they gave to first years at Trill Polytech.” Bejal chuckled to himself, getting lost for a moment in the screen and buttons of the device. He quickly shook it off and continued through the items.

“This compact device is a hypo, well excuse me Hypospray. A noninvasive way of administering medicine without the use of needles. The transport mechanism of compressed air is actually quite fascinating. If you really do need to make an incision into the patients skin though the exoscapel next to the hypo-spray would do it. Simple yet elegant use of laser technology, would most likely want to use the dermal regenerator over here on the incision afterwards. ” Bejal paused to pick up one of the medicines and bring it closer for inspection. “Ah Terakine, a common pain medicine, then this gel is, hmm.” Bejal took a moment to unscrew the cap and look inside before chuckling to himself. ” Oh of course. Dermaline gel, a burn treatment. Never got to much experience with it at the academy but it seems rather self explanatory. I also imagine burns may be a tad more common aboard a starship. This gel has actually been in use since at least the twenty one fifty’s. Some formula changes over the years I imagine but mostly still the same. Almost marvelous in its simplicity really. ” Once he was finished waxing poetic about burn treatments he picked up the seventh and final item, a flat wooden stick with a Starfleet insignia imprinted on it.

“And this lieutenant is a tongue depressor… even in space it is made of wood.” He held the depressor out towards the lieutenant to accompany his attempt at humor.

Vincent’s grin widened as he watched the cadet skillfully navigate the array of medical instruments. He couldn’t help but chuckle when the cadet handed him a tongue depressor, which he took with a light-hearted smile. “Ah, the versatile tongue depressor,” he mused, twirling it between his fingers. “Also useful as a handle for homemade ice pops,” he added, injecting a bit of his own humour into the moment.

“Very impressive, Cadet,” Vincent continued, his tone turning more serious as he appraised the young officer’s technique. “Your instructors’ reports were not an overstatement.” He nodded approvingly, clearly pleased with the cadet’s proficiency and confidence. “It’s evident that you’ve been paying close attention in your training.”

Vincent’s eyes sparkled with genuine interest as he watched the cadet. “Mastering these tools is crucial, but so is understanding the patient behind them. Each piece of equipment has its purpose, but it’s your ability to use them effectively that will make the difference in critical situations.”

He paused for a moment, allowing his words to sink in before continuing, “Now, why don’t you walk me through your thought process as you handle these instruments? I want to understand how you approach a diagnosis and treatment plan.”

Bejal stood with perfect posture, almost beaming as Vincent complimented him, almost soaking it in like a plant would sunlight. Obviously very pleased with himself and his superiors reaction to him. Sporting a cocky smile from ear to ear as his eyes sparkled a bit. His moment of preening fell a bit as Vincent began to bring up patients. The air of confidence and pride falling a bit back into the air of nervous anxiety the cadet had worn on the way in.

“Ah yes, patients, you see while academically I ” The cadet cut his mumbling off as he listened to the rest of the lieutenants explanation. Some visible relief coming upon hearing it was just about treatment plans but the same nervous disposition remained seemingly replacing his moment of confidence. Picking up the medical tricorder again the cadet removed its scanning module as he avoided looking at the lieutenant.

“Ah yes, treatment plans. A very important and methodical part of medicine.” He stuttered a bit nervously again before steadying with another deep breath in. “So how would you like to start this? Say as if a crew-member has come in for medical scans?” He asked waving the tri corder’s scanner a bit. “The initial data collection and examination phase essentially.” The cadet continued some of the earlier rigidness returning to his voice.

“Yes, actually, I have a better idea.” Vincent walked over to a nurse who was attending to a patient on the opposite side of the room. Cadet Sozenn wouldn’t be able to hear the conversation, but after some nodding from both Vincent and the nurse, and then a brief exchange with the Andorian patient, he motioned for the cadet to join them.

“Alright, Cadet. The Chief here has come into sickbay with…” He glanced at the Chief Petty Officer, who began explaining his symptoms.

“I’ve been experiencing some numbness and tingling in my right arm,” the Chief Petty Officer said, his expression serious but calm. “It started as an occasional discomfort, but lately, it’s been getting worse. There’s a constant dull ache now, and sometimes I lose grip strength in my hand.”

Vincent nodded thoughtfully, then turned to the cadet. “Cadet, based on these symptoms, what would be your initial assessment? And what steps would you take to confirm your diagnosis?” He stepped back slightly, giving Sozenn the space to engage directly with the patient and apply his training. This was a practical test, not just of medical knowledge, but of bedside manner and critical thinking under pressure.

Bejal was clearly nervous and caught off guard from being put on the spot but attempted to roll with it if somewhat awkwardly. He had done work with patients before but the personal interactions never came as easy to him as other cadets. Taking notes on his PADD as the chief listed off his symptoms, Bejal smiled at the chief if a bit awkwardly. “There are a few possible causes, though I do have some general ideas.” He said in response to Vincent’s questions before stepping towards the chief and addressing him. “Hello, I am medical cadet Bejal Sozenn. Pleasure to make your acquaintance.” Taking a seat next to the chief he continued. “What is your job on the ship? What sort of motions do you do on a regular basis?” If a bit overly formal this was both an attempt to establish some connection with the patient while also gathering relevant information.

“I’m one of the few non-enlisted crewmen aboard the ship, and one of the operations managers in beta shift, I mainly make sure we have everything we need and in the right places for the rest of the crew to do their own jobs.” He explained, clearly content at allowing the cadet to go through their training. “As for motions, a lot of console work, maybe some lifting of boxes and plates but we mainly use antigravity lifts for those.” He explained.

Bejal nodded listening to the crewmen as he continued taking notes on his PADD maybe not looking up at the speaker as much as he should have. “Thank you, for all you do on the ship. Doesn’t sound like it could operate without you.” Bejal delivered this earnest and genuine complaint with a slight chuckle which was masking some of his own nerves. Standing up and removing the scanner module from his medical tricorder. “I am just gonna take a quick scan of your arm here and see if we can’t figure out what we are working with ok?” Bejal tried to say this as reassuringly as he could if not a little tense. Taking the scanner module he began to scan along the offending arm. Starting at the shoulder and focusing at first around the rotator cuff following a certain suspicion but if nothing came up he would continue the scan down the rest of the arm.

The scanner highlighted inflammation and pressure around the brachial plexus, indicating a pinched nerve.

Bejal nodded at the scanner, before turning back to the patient with a gentle smile. “You appear to have pinched a nerve which would explain your symptoms. Treatment is commonly resting the affected area as to refrain from adding more compression to the nerve. Your symptoms presumably worsened due to repeated compression. So long as LT. Yancy agrees I would simply recommend some medical leave to rest the arm and some anti inflammatory medication for the pain.” Bejal stated simply and mater of factly.
