It had been an eventful day in Sickbay.

With everything that had occurred in the attack on the USS Challenger, many of the medical recruits had been dragged into action without oversight and supervision and it was fair to say that pretty much all of them involved did spectacularly and coped well under the immense pressure. All of them had done their best to treat what was in front of them and all of them had proven themselves capable hands.

As such, a night of de-stressing was in order. Nine Forward, the official crew lounge of the USS Challenger down on deck nine would be the watering hole for the medical teams to relax and recouperate after a brutal turn of events. Drinks were flowing, people were talking and everyone was attempting to forget about the day’s events as to protect their own mental health.

What happens in Nine Forward, stays in Nine Forward.

Vince had retreated to the solace of his quarters to review the day’s events. Sickbay had been put to the test, and so had his newly onboarded cadets, whom he was extremely proud of. He recalled his earlier conversation with Cadet Conway, where they discussed how someone might react in a real-life situation and whether Vincent trusted them to do their job. Conway stood out in his mind due to his rigid adherence to protocol. During their exchange, Vincent had asked if the cadet could be trusted in a medical emergency. Conway’s thoughtful response highlighted the uncertainty of hypothetical situations, emphasising that true trust and capability could only be proven in actual emergencies. This conversation made Vincent ponder the broader implications of trust in their profession, realising that while training was crucial, the deeper trust between mentor and mentee was equally important.

From all the reports the nurses and officers had filed, it was clear that the cadets had proved themselves, even though none had yet submitted their own reports. Vince was aware of the social gathering organised as a detox and unwind, something he agreed with wholeheartedly. Closing his system, he looked at the time and decided to see if anyone had joined in with the gathering. Mental health was as important as physical health, and social events provided a release for unspoken stresses.

Zachariah had never experienced the joys of Nine Forward before.

However, after the ships encounter with the Orions he was in desperate need of some down time and when it had become apparent that the medical crew were all gathering in the lounge, he decided to pay a visit. He heeded the words of Lieutenant Yancey, that ‘A ship is only as strong as the crew that sails it’ and he heeded the Cheif Medical Officers advice around making friends.

He had set up in the corner of Nine Forward with an Aldebaran Whiskey to hand. He had never been much of a drinker, however he understood that alcohol was a great way to be social. He also didn’t much mind an Aldebaran Whiskey, the strong green drink was quite appealing to his pallet. He had first tried it on Earth and it had been his staple drink ever since.

The young recruit waited, anticipating more people’s arrivals soon.
