Internal bleeding.

Of course it was something complicated, whatever god looked over them was cruel and loved to put a twist in the story. Internal bleeding was definitely something which would require a visit to Sick Bay, no matter how against that she was. He wasn’t about to start carrying out surgery on a dirty, non sanitary floor. That breached pretty much every procedure and policy in Star Fleet.

The ensign he called over stopped and spoke to him firmly, and he nodded in response to her. “I completely agree” he started. “However, as you can see I appear to be dealing with a little bit of a medical emergency here” he continued, gesturing towards the lounge host. “I can’t leave and get down to Sick Bay, hence I was really hoping you could go and collect a medical tricoder, a syringe, a vial of inaprovaline and a vial of terakine”. He paused briefly. “Please” he added, just for effect.

He turned back to the patient, not even checking if the ensign had run off to collect his list. “Unfortunately, this is going to be a Sick Bay visit like it or not. I know you’re against that, but there’s nothing I can do. I have a duty to preserve your life, and I can’t do that here. I can stabilise it with inaprovaline but I can’t garuntee that will fix the issue without a surgical intervention”

She sighed and closed her eyes, bringing her free hand to rest on her abdomen. “I was really hoping you would say you could just give me a shot, tell me to rest, and send me on my way.” She took another slow breath as if trying to steady herself. When she opened her light brown eyes, they were filled with worry. “There are reasons I don’t want this on the record. Treat me if you need to, but if people outside this ship find out because you’ve written it down, someone will die. I’m not saying this to be dramatic, Cadet, it’s simply the reality. And I should also tell you that I am currently pregnant.”

Pregnant…

That threw a spanner in the works. Zachariah sighed softly, knowing full well he was unable to assess the health of the unborn child without a medical tricoder or some proper equipment. There was very little he could do in general until the poor ensign whom he had tasked returned with the items that he had requested. He didn’t want to move the lounge host if possible, he wasn’t entirely sure if she was stable enough to make it from the cargo bay to the medical areas.

Also, there was still the demand not to put anything on record and it was still irritating him, though he tried not to show it. He’d always been taught that rules and policies and procedures were important and he had always done his best to follow them. This patient was now asking him to completely ignore policy and procedure and not document any of what he was doing.

He hated it.

Yet, he saw the worry in her eyes when she opened them and he let out a small smile. “Hey, if it helps it isn’t something that isn’t treatable. As soon as the ensign gets back, I’ll get you some pain relief and get you stable enough to get down to Sick Bay, even if I need to carry you myself” he let out a small chuckle. “Whatever happens, you and your unborn child will be okay”.

Was he lying? He sure hoped not.

OOC: Awesome writing you two! I can’t wait to see how this turns out!

Capt Foley - CO

OOC: Appreciate it boss, throughly enjoying writing with Linds and on this ship!

Demara gazed at him intently, her brown eyes assessing. For several moments she said nothing until she finally nodded. “You have a pretty good bedside manner for a cadet.”

The bay doors opened and the ensign returned. “Here’s the requested supplies. I let the duty nurse know you had a patient over here and that you’d call for help if you needed it.” She set the kit down and stepped backwards. “I’ve got to get to my duty station. Good luck!” Then she disappeared.

“Thank you”

It was both a response to his patient and to the ensign who returned with his requested supplies. The flact she had let the duty nurse know was even better, Sickbay would be aware that there was a patient who was going to be en-route soon. Zachariah was almost certain there would be a few more, however he wasn’t sure how many because he still didn’t know the extent of the damage to the ship.

Zachariah closed his hands around the familar feeling medical tricorder, offering a slight smile. Whilst one hand set to work using the device to scan the victim to check both her health and the health of the unborn child like it was something he had done a hundred or so times, his other hand was clumsily attempting to put vials into a hypospray machine in order to inject his requested medicines into the patient.

His eyes flicked back to the tricorder, and he waited for his diagnosis to be confirmed.

There were several things that would jump out at Conway was he read through the scan:
1) Demara had a mixture of Human and Ullian DNA
2) She was most definitely pregnant, but the mixed biology made it hard to guess a precise age of the fetus, but it seemed she was still in her first trimester (most likely).
3) The internal bleeding was coming from a liver laceration. While it wasn’t a large injury, blood was slowly trickling into Demara’s abdomen.
4) Her heart rate was still climbing and her blood pressure slowly dropping in concert with the blood loss.

Before he could work out anything else, the ship shook hard. “Crap,” Demara said, instantly alert and taking in their surroundings. Then she ship shook hard again, and Demara was tossed off the crate she was sitting on, toppling over Zachariah and his med kit so they were both in a heap on the deck. Another shake resulted in the lights in the cargo bay going dark for a moment before the emergency lights came on.

Demara pushed herself up, and pulled herself off of him. “Are you okay?”

Interesting.

The young medical cadet studied the tricorder, a look of almost wonder on his face. He hadn’t spent much time learning about Ullian culture, although his limited research left him aware that they were a telepathic humanoid species native to the Ullian homeworld. After that, he was in the dark on treating an Ullian. Thankfully, the patient also had a mixture of human DNA and that he was much more comfortable on.

The pregnancy was confirmed, which didn’t surprise him. He had no reason to believe that she was lying about that. He also noted the liver laceration, which explained the internal bleeding. Blood was seeping into the patient’s abdomen, which he hoped to treat with the inaprovaline. A careful enough dose and he would be able to promote and stimulate tissue regrowth.

However, he didn’t have time to act on those plans as the next thing he knew, the ship shook violently once again and deposited his patient on top of him. Darkness overtook the cargobay for a few moments until the emergency lights kicked in. The patient pulled herself to her feet and asked if he was okay. He took a few seconds to compose himself before pulling himself up to his feet.

“I think so, are you?” he asked, eyes darting around to see where his equipment had ended up.

Within the dim space, Demara nodded, shifting herself to sit cross-legged on the floor. She braced herself on one arm and took deep breaths, blowing them out through her lips. “A little dizzy though. So… am I going to die?” she said lightly, as if this might not be the first time she’d asked such a question.

~Demara, Lounge Host

“No”

He was quite blunt about it, but it was true. He had absolutely no intention of letting her pass away in his care. He had a plan to treat her, get her stable enough to get her down to sickbay where she could be left to be monitored. If the inaprovaline worked, hopefully she wouldn’t need further treatment. If it didn’t, he would be seeing her again soon enough.

Zachariah’s eyes locked with his equipment which had ended up on the floor and he gathered up as much as he could. He finished preparing the hypospray machine with the inaprovaline. He had prepared 175ml of inaprovaline to be injected into the lounge host. He was aware that 150ml plus stimulated tissue regeneration and he was also aware that too much would do some serious damage. 175ml was a good starting point.

“No, you won’t die” he stated, offering her a slight smile. “Although the tricorder did confirm my suspicions that you have a little bit of an internal bleed so you will need to be monitored in sickbay for a few hours.” He pressed the hypospray machine against her and injected the medication. “Quick shot of inaprovaline, to control the bleeding. I’ll follow this up with some pain relief, I promise”.
