The ship shook and the ship went to red alert. The lights stayed on, and though parts of Deck 6 was not too far from the issues on Deck 5, so far it seemed okay.~Mischief Maker
She ran a hand over her mussed blue hair as it fell over her shoulders and hurried out into the corridor. Typically, civilians were supposed to go to quarters in an emergency so they weren’t in the way, but Demara was, one, not your typical civilian, and two, already dealing with an issue.
The fairly tall Human-appearing woman moved gracefully down the corridor, her long shimmery-pewter dress stretching with her body as she pciked up speed. Past some of the crew quarters, Aryal spotted a cadet in the hall. Blue uniform. “Hey, cadet! Are you medical?” she called out.

Manic. There was no real way to describe what else he was witnessing.
Zachariah had been in his quarters when the ship had shook rather violently. The young cadet had relaxing between shifts, having spent much of the earlier part of the day in Sick Bay. He’d been lounging on his bunk, reading and just letting the galaxy pass him by when the shaking of the ship had startled him and brought his attention out of what he was reading and back into the real world.
Almost instantly, the young male began to wonder what had caused the ship to shake in the manor it had. He wondered at first if it was normal and just something he would get used to when being onboard a spaceship. He then began to wonder if something had gone wrong, potentially in engineering or one of the other departments and he wondered if it was maybe something science related.
The ship going into red alert soon after confirmed Zachariah’s theory that something had gone wrong. Within seconds, he was off his bunk with his feet firmly planted on the metallic floor of his shared cabin. Red alert meant something bad, and Zachariah knew something bad meant that all hands would be needed. He wasn’t due in Sick Bay, however he figured he would go and be useful anyway. He was certain someone would put him to work and even if they didn’t, maybe someone would fill him in on what had happened.
He pulled his blue uniform top over his undershirt and quickly adjusted it to Star Fleet standards before he made sure he had everything with him he would need. Equipment was limited, most of his medical equipment was kept on Sick Bay itself. He hoped that he didn’t come across anything before he reached Sick Bay, or anything he did come across he hoped didn’t require any specialised equipment to deal with because he didn’t have any of it on him.
Leaving his cabin, he swung a left towards the turbolift to make his way up to deck four. Whilst main Sick Bay may have been based on deck six, all of Zachariah’s equipment was in the smaller Sick Bay on deck four where he had been working earlier in the day. Before he had even had time to walk however, he heard someone shout. It took him a few seconds to process that it was him being shouted to and he spun in the direction of the voice. It took him a few more seconds to process that she had asked if he was a medical based cadet, but when he did he was quick to answer.
“I am, yes. If it’s not urgent, I really need to get to Sick Bay” he spoke blunty. He didn’t have time to help if it wasn’t an emergency, not until he knew the full scope of the situation.

“It is,” she said firmly. “Come with me,” Demara said with all the confidence and expectation of someone who expected the order to be followed. She moved back towards the cargo bays, but rather than Cargo Bay 1 where their special cargo was, she was headed towards Bay 2.

He wondered if the female was a high ranking officer off duty whom he’d never had the pleasure of crossing. Either that, or she was demanding.
She didn’t dress in Star Fleet attire, so in the young cadet’s head that ruled out the high ranking officer theory. Either way, she spoke with confidence and it came across to Zachariah like she was used to telling people what to do. Whichever it was, she’d made it clear that there was an emergency and he wasn’t going to argue with her if there was a chance that someone was genuinely in need of help. If it turned out she was lying, that was a different story however.
As he followed her, he spoke. “Care to brief me on what I am walking into, ma’am?” he asked, matching her tone and expecting an answer himself. He didn’t like going into situations blind, he much preferred having some understanding of what he was dealing with. Even if he didn’t have the full picture, some information was better than no information.
“Nope, not here.”
He noted where they were walking. From his exploration of the ship when he had first come onboard, he established it was somewhere towards the cargo bays. He tried to make a quick mental map of the ship in his head and establish the proximity of the cargo bays to main Sick Bay just in case he needed any form of equipment but his mind was drawing a blank. Definitely more ship exploration needed, of that he was certain.
“I assume someone is injured, but any information you can provide would be wonderful” he finished.

Demara seemed to ignore him and simply stepped into the cargo bay. One step, two, three. She stopped and waited for the sound of the door behind him to close before her body sagged and she let out a pained exhale.
Her movements slowed and she wrapped an arm around her torso as she moved over to a cargo container that was ow enough for her to sit on. With a shaky breath, she turned and sat, bracing herself on one arm. Closing her eyes, she breathed in and out through partially pursed lips. “I can’t go to Sickbay. I need medial attention but I need to ask for your discretion. It’s vital that this is in’t in any record.”
~Demara, Lounge Host
Well, now his brain was working overtime.
She was being secretive, for reasons that he could not yet establish. He’d found it rude at first when he’d refused to share any information with him but now he realised she wasn’t being entirely rude and was instead just being secretive. He had a thousand questions that he wanted to ask, regarding why she was being so secretive and why she couldn’t go to Sick Bay but he decided that this wasn’t the time for it.
However her final request had thrown him a dilemma. “It’s vital that this is in’t in any record” she had said. Whilst he respected her privacy, despite having a thousand questions, it was also Star Fleet policy to document all medical treatments conducted on a Star Fleet vessel. Could he really afford to ignore policy and procedure so young into his career?
That was a question for later. Something he could discuss with Lieutenant Yancey if it came to it.
“Okay…” he paused for a second. “Talk me through the events of what occurred prior to the injury.” he spoke softly. He had limited equipment on his person, so he resorted to conducting his initial checks the old school method. He had already established through talking to the female that she was breathing, responsive and consicious so now it was up to him to estabish what injuries he was dealing with.
He moved quickly but methodically, taking a pulse rate from the girl by placing two fingers on her radial artery in her left wrist. Once his pulse check was completed, he cast his eyes towards the girl’s mouth and chest and slowly watched her chest rise and fall, counting both her breathing rate and the time until he was satisfied that he had a roughly accurate assessment of her breathing rate.
She breathing was uneven and her pulse fast.
Without equipment, he knew it would be difficult to assess any internal injuries which she might be suffering. Without equipment, he knew he would have to resort to the old school methods.

“I was in my quarters, getting ready to go down to the Lounge before the lunch rush. I’m the host there,” she said, pausing to take a breath. “When the ship shook, I was thrown forward and hit my stomach quite hard.” The dress she was wearing was actually a top and skirt, which became apparent as Demara pulled the top up and tried not to wince. Even the fabric on her skin hurt.
Abdomen barred, her light brown skin was covered in bruising. She leaned back a bit, giving him easier access while also easing some of the pain.
~Demara, Lounge Host
Every medical textbook the boy had ever read was being consulted in his mind.
The low respiration rate and the high pulse rate was a concern, but not as much of a concern as the brusing which she had revealed. He listened as she spoke and explained the prelude to her injuries. He shook his head slowly, pressing around her abdomen for any signs of tightness whilst also looking for any signs of any swelling which may of made itself apparent in the time since the injury occurred.
“The winced at his touch, and there was a firmness near the surface, though as he moved downwards, that firmness was more apparent.
His mind was moving at a thousand miles per hour, considering potential outcomes. The best was that the impact had caused some bruising on the abdomen and that was it, however that didn’t match with the respiration rate and pulse rate issues. The most likely medical issue was one that he wouldn’t be able to treat whilst on the floor in a cargo bay, it was one which would require a stocked Sick Bay.
His patient didn’t seem willing to visit Sick Bay.
“Just keep calm, you’re in good hands” he said, however how much of his comment was meant to reassure himself was unknown. “Have you had an unquenchable thirst since your injury occurred?” he asked, hoping her answer was no so that he could rule out the one issue that he hoped wasn’t the case. Internal bleeding would be an absolute nightmare to treat in a storage area.
“A bit,” she said. “But that’s been normal for me lately.” She spotted something out of the corner of her eyes and pulled her top down, ducking her head to the side. She was about to tell him the complicating factor for all of this, but that would have to wait.
Zachariah listened to the patient answer, then spun as he saw an ensign run past. “Come here!” he shouted, hoping to catch the poor ensign’s attention.

The ensign stopped. “It’s a red alert cadet, you should be at your station,” she said firmly.

Internal bleeding.
Of course it was something complicated, whatever god looked over them was cruel and loved to put a twist in the story. Internal bleeding was definitely something which would require a visit to Sick Bay, no matter how against that she was. He wasn’t about to start carrying out surgery on a dirty, non sanitary floor. That breached pretty much every procedure and policy in Star Fleet.
The ensign he called over stopped and spoke to him firmly, and he nodded in response to her. “I completely agree” he started. “However, as you can see I appear to be dealing with a little bit of a medical emergency here” he continued, gesturing towards the lounge host. “I can’t leave and get down to Sick Bay, hence I was really hoping you could go and collect a medical tricoder, a syringe, a vial of inaprovaline and a vial of terakine”. He paused briefly. “Please” he added, just for effect.
He turned back to the patient, not even checking if the ensign had run off to collect his list. “Unfortunately, this is going to be a Sick Bay visit like it or not. I know you’re against that, but there’s nothing I can do. I have a duty to preserve your life, and I can’t do that here. I can stabilise it with inaprovaline but I can’t garuntee that will fix the issue without a surgical intervention”

She sighed and closed her eyes, bringing her free hand to rest on her abdomen. “I was really hoping you would say you could just give me a shot, tell me to rest, and send me on my way.” She took another slow breath as if trying to steady herself. When she opened her light brown eyes, they were filled with worry. “There are reasons I don’t want this on the record. Treat me if you need to, but if people outside this ship find out because you’ve written it down, someone will die. I’m not saying this to be dramatic, Cadet, it’s simply the reality. And I should also tell you that I am currently pregnant.”
~Demara, Lounge Host
Pregnant…
That threw a spanner in the works. Zachariah sighed softly, knowing full well he was unable to assess the health of the unborn child without a medical tricoder or some proper equipment. There was very little he could do in general until the poor ensign whom he had tasked returned with the items that he had requested. He didn’t want to move the lounge host if possible, he wasn’t entirely sure if she was stable enough to make it from the cargo bay to the medical areas.
Also, there was still the demand not to put anything on record and it was still irritating him, though he tried not to show it. He’d always been taught that rules and policies and procedures were important and he had always done his best to follow them. This patient was now asking him to completely ignore policy and procedure and not document any of what he was doing.
He hated it.
Yet, he saw the worry in her eyes when she opened them and he let out a small smile. “Hey, if it helps it isn’t something that isn’t treatable. As soon as the ensign gets back, I’ll get you some pain relief and get you stable enough to get down to Sick Bay, even if I need to carry you myself” he let out a small chuckle. “Whatever happens, you and your unborn child will be okay”.
Was he lying? He sure hoped not.
