A tall but lanky Trill haphazardly navigated his way through corridors and turbo-lifts of the Challenger. Not yet adjusted to the specific type of hustle and bustle on a active star-ship he moved a bit slowly and awkwardly. A fact unaided by his head being craned down at his tricorder somewhat frantically tapping at the buttons. After more then a few wrong turns the distracted young man found himself standing before the doors to the med bay. Taking a moment to stow his tricorder and straighten his cadets uniform he began to mutter to himself a bit.

“Reporting to LT. Yancy, should mention his guide to cultural sensitivity. No that’s normal Starfleet reading, his adaptive Immunotherapy paper is more impressive. Though is that trying too hard? Should I mention having been a initiate? That brings up my dismissal though, my academy grades show my medical worth however and …” Cutting himself off from his mumbling the cadet took a deep breath closing his eyes for moment. Hoping no one over heard all that as he attempted to settle the anxiety within. Producing a small flat stone from his pocket and soothingly rubbing it along his fingers as he stepped into the med-bay.

“Medical Cadet Sozenn reporting in Lieutenant. Your papers are quite informative sir. ” He presented himself to the lieutenant a bit rigidly, winching internally a bit at the possible awkwardness of the last line.

Vincent was filing the latest reports on the cadets and was about to start updating the medical journal he was keeping when a Cadet stepped into the med bay. “At ease, Cadet,” he said, welcoming the distraction with a smile. “Otherwise, your first lesson will be how to administer pain relief for a strained neck,” he joked, easing the tension.

“I haven’t had the chance to review the latest crew intake yet, Cadet. Why don’t you tell me about yourself?” he asked, a slight fib since Vincent preferred hearing it directly from the source. He always believed in getting to know his team members personally.

Bejal seemed put somewhat at ease by the lieutenants joke gaining a slight smile. His response was still somewhat rigid. “I studied medicine and life sciences first on Trill before applying to Starfleet. At the academy I took care to brush up on my xenobiologly knowledge along with my core studies. ” He took a pause here, glancing down at the small stone he was rabidly rubbing between his fingers. With a sigh he finally relaxed his shoulders a bit before pulling up a nearby stool. He continued with a bit of a unsure laugh.

“That wasn’t quite at ease was it? Pardon my nerves sir, new beginnings and all that. I have always had a curious mind and putting that mind to work in Starfleet has always been one of two dreams of mine. The other was more cultural in nature I suppose but not one I was able to make happen. In old earth parlance I suppose you could say I have something to prove. If only to myself. I look forward to learning all I can from you sir. “

Vincent appreciated the cadet’s candid answers; it was reassuring to see that the Academy hadn’t extinguished the spirit of the new generation of officers. “I look forward to imparting my knowledge to you as well, and I’m certain there will be times when you’ll teach me a thing or two. It’s not true that you can’t teach old targs new tricks,” he chuckled warmly.

“Do you have any family in Starfleet or any medical professionals in your family?” he asked, wanting to gain a deeper understanding of the cadet’s background.

“Not Starfleet but my father is a doctor albeit more on the research side of things. My mother holds a mid level position in the Ministry of Science. Technically also a doctor but I doubt you were meaning applied mathematics.” Bejal chuckled to himself here a bit, slipping the stone he’d been rubbing into his pocket as his anxiety subsided a bit.

“I think both of them hoped I would remain on Trill. They had some nerves about me joining Sarfleet, but its the front-lines of both discovery and medicine. They understood that at least.”
