The doors to sickbay slid open a tall Bolian male walked in. He was in the red uniform of Engineers, had a smile on his face, and was carrying a large tray with a plastic cover. He walked up to desk and said “Hello. I am Lieutenant Kendric Tor, the new CE. I am here for my onboarding physical AND…’ and he took the cover off the tray and set it down, “… I baked cookies.” and he chuckled. The tray was covered in cookies of all different flavors and smelled like they had just come out of the oven.

Vincent was engrossed in reviewing the latest medical reports from Starfleet Medical Headquarters when the aroma of cookies caught his attention. Glancing up, he wasn’t surprised to see the chief engineer, but the presence of a Bolian with a tray of cookies piqued his interest. “Lieutenant Tor, it’s a pleasure to meet you,” he greeted, rising to shake the man’s hand. “I hope those cookies aren’t an attempt to sway us from conducting a thorough medical examination,” he joked lightly.

Tor shook the man’s hand and said “Oh no. I save the sourdough bread and made from scratch butter and jams for bribes.” with a smile.

“Cadet Koerner, this seems like the perfect opportunity for you to demonstrate your understanding of Bolian physiology. Grab a medical tricorder, and let’s proceed with our onboarding checkup.”

Tor smiled at the Cadet and said “I do love being a test subject. Any questions, please ask.” and he took a seat on a biobed.

“Ok cadet, whats the plan,” He asked smiling and the new Chief’s joke about being a test subject.

Instead of Cadet Koerner returning, another Cadet presented the medical tricorder ready for scanning. Vincent wasn’t phased by the sudden change in personnel; it happened rather frequently aboard the ship as Cadets unsure would ‘tap out,’ and those willing to volunteer could step up. It was a good system, as some people learned best through observation.

“Brilliant, let’s start at the head and make our way down. The trick is not to go too fast,” Vincent explained, observing as the Cadet followed his instructions diligently. “The white dot on the screen will indicate how steady you’re going, and you want to aim to keep it inside the square.”

As the scanning commenced, Vincent continued, “While you’re scanning, it’s always good to speak to the patient. Ask them how their day has been, or for onboarding, it’s often the question of how they ended up aboard in the first place.” He turned to the new Chief Engineer, expecting an answer to his query.

Tor smiled and nodded at the CMO but spoke to the Cadet. “So I was-slash-am a Faculty memeber at the Academy. Engineering School, of course.” and he chuckled. “But prior to that I was on board ships. I really missed that, but I didn’t want to give up teaching. So, when this opportunity arose, I applied and was lucky enough to be selected. And here I am!” he finished with a broad smile. “How’s everything looking? I’m not going to grow a third arm or anything soon, am I?” and he chuckled good-naturedly.

The cadet chuckled, shaking their head gently. “No sir, no third arm, although as an engineer, I must admit, it might have its practical uses.” Their tone lightened as they engaged in the banter. “There’s nothing particularly unusual in the scan, although your adrenaline levels are a tad elevated. Did you sprint all the way here?” they inquired with a playful smirk.

“Well I was super-excited to be meeting the people that will undoubtedly be seeing my staff more often than I like.” Tor said and chuckled. It was a well known, and often teased, fact that Engineering almost always had someone in Sickbay.

Vincet grinned appreciating the cadet’s humor. “Actually, cadet, it’s a common phenomenon during initial medical examinations. For some reason, most people experience an adrenaline surge upon arrival. It’s well-documented and often referred to as ‘Assignment Adrenaline.’”
