Sixteen crates of various sizes materialized into the cargo bay.~Mischief Maker
As Pilar entered the Cargo Bay, her gaze immediately fell upon the newly materialized crates. She counted them in her head.
“Sixteen crates,” she murmured to herself, “What could they possibly contain?”She stepped on the transporter pad, and approached the nearest crate. With a careful hand, she traced the outline of its edges.
Commander Halcyone
(Executive Officer)“Won’t know unless we open them.” said a new voice. Walking across the bay was a large, portly Bolian… the new Chief Engineer. He smiled and waved at Halcyone and said “You must be the XO. Sorry I haven’t met with you yet, on-boarding can be a bit hectic.” He looked at the crates and them pulled out a heavily modified tricorder. “I could probably get us a rough idea what’s in there with this.” he said, and began scanning a random crate.
Tor, CE
Pilar watched as the Chief Engineer approached. She nodded at Tor’s suggestion, acknowledging the practicality of his approach, returned his smile and then she said, “No need to apologize, Lieutenant Tor. On-boarding is always a whirlwind. Looks like we’re diving into the action together sooner than expected.”
As he began scanning the crates with his modified tricorder, Pilar craned her next and her fingers drummed lightly against her thigh as she waited for the results of the scans.
“What do you think? Should we open one of them?” she asked in an anxious tone.Commander Halcyone
(Executive Officer)The crates all held various objects, wrapped in protective coverings ore stored in their own cases. Beyond these protective measures, the materials all came back as pottery, porcelain, metals (various compositions that included iron, bronze, silver, gold, but also some more advanced metals and composites like rodinium, bersium and pergium. There was even signs of leathers and cellulose-based items inside.

“Commander if I may,” Zunara called as he crossed into the Cargo Bay from Transporter Room One, “I believe I should open one of the crates first, it pays to be ready for anything.”
-Lieutenant Zunara: Chief of Security-
Pilar’s gaze shifted from Zunara to the Tor, awaiting confirmation from the CE, since he had scanned them. She respected Zunara’s expertise in security matters, but she needed the Tor’s approval before any action was taken. Tor might have a better take on whether opening the crates was a good idea.
Commander Halcyone
(Executive Officer)bump
Tor finished his scans and said “Well, physically they are clear. No unknown power sources, modifications to the crates themselves, and no signs of any ‘surprises’. But if I may…” he said with a look at the CoS, “… might wanna have Science take a look as well.” He waved the tricorder in his hand slightly. “This isn’t geared for in-depth biological scans; so if there is a bacteria or something inside or on the artifacts, I won’t see it. But it’s your call, Lieutenant.”
Tor, CE
Pilar nodded as Tor spoke and appreciated his thoroughness. Glancing at Lieutenant Zunara, his readiness to proceed.
“Lieutenant Zunara, let us proceed with opening one of the crates, but do so with caution.”Commander Halcyone
(Executive Officer)“Aye aye Commander,” Zunara replied, moving slowly towards one of the crates. He clicked the locks and gently pushed the lid open, his phaser primed his other hand.
-Lieutenant Zunara: Chief of Security-
All the crates were marked on the outside with code that identified the crate and its contents. Inside this one were a bunch of objects carefully ensconced in protective wrapping. None of the objects themselves were visible and of a mix of sizes. There was at least two layers in the crate, ensuring nothing was jammed in there that might get accidentally broken.
~Mischief Maker
Pilar watched as Lieutenant Zunara carefully opened the crate, as the lid creaked open, revealing the neatly wrapped objects inside, Pilar’s eyes narrowed, “Interesting,” she murmured, stepping closer to get a better look. Her eyes scanned the markings on the crates, each item was carefully packed, hinting at their importance or fragility.
“We need to catalog each item in the ship’s database,” Pilar declared. “Let’s start with the larger ones. Lieutenant Zunara, ensure we have a clear inventory for analysis.”
Commander Halcyone
(Executive Officer)“Aye sir,” Zunara replied, carefully lifting the first wrapped item.
-Lieutenant Zunara: Chief of Security-
Pilar was sure the contents of the crate held a promise of something significant, something that could potentially hold the key was to why the freighter was being attacked. She stepped closer, to have a better look at the items. “I’ll inform our science department that we’ll need to run a thorough analysis on these,” she said.
Commander Halcyone
(Executive Officer)The first item was some sort of vase, in a red clay with symbols etched around the rim and the base. In the middle was a set of three circles that resembled a bullseye.
~Mischief Maker
Pilar carefully examined the symbols etched onto the vase’s surface. What did they represent? Were they some ancient script or merely decorative motifs? And what about the concentric circles at the center? They seemed significant, perhaps pointing to the vase’s purpose or origin. “These designs they seem…purposeful. An alien language perhaps?” She carefully handed it off to Tor, “What do you think? Maybe you can scan it with the tricorder and see if it picks up anything?”
Commander Halcyone
(Executive Officer)Tor took out the tricorder and began an in-depth scan. He looked at the atomic structure, chemical and material components; and then he looked for any kind radiation, electromagnetic activity… anything that could give them clues as to the object’s origin, purpose, or what could make it a target for theft.
Tor, CE
“They could be concealing weapons of some kind? Break us up while our guard is down?”
-Lieutenant Zunara: Chief of Security-
The vase was… a vase. It was unglazed and made of a non-vitreous ceramic fired at a low temperature than other ceramics. The extra carbon suggested it was fired in a fire pit situation of some kind. The symmetry of the shape suggested it had been made on some sort of potter’s wheel. The unglazed nature meant it was decorative as the ceramic was porous and could not actually hold anything. It was also very old: about 8000 years old. Much older than the dead civilization that it was supposedly from, so might have been a revered object to have been kept around so long.
