Ethan stepped out of the turbolift, narrowly avoiding an engineering cadet rushing to get to the shuttle bay. Smiling cheerily at them, and waving off their apologies, he continued down the hall to sickbay.Entering the room he glanced around, taking in the biobeds scattered about, and the soothing hum of the various pieces of equipment. Spotting a blue uniformed lieutenant he strode up wincing slightly and gently rolling his shoulder as his old injury flared slightly.
“Good morning Sir, Cadet Koerner reporting as ordered”.
His melodic Welsh accent cut through the air, as he brushed his slight red coloured fringe out of his brown eyes.
Vincent eagerly welcomed the Cadet into his team, which primarily consisted of nurses enlisted to assist in the ongoing training of the Academy contingent alongside the occasional ensign honing their medical skills. Additionally, there were the Cadet Medical Officers, who shared similar duties t9o the other cadets but possessed a higher level of medical responsibility.
“Ah, Cadet Koerner, it’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I trust your journey here wasn’t too arduous,” he remarked, keenly observing the Cadet’s subtle signs of discomfort. “Shall we begin with both your orientation to sickbay and address that discomfort you’re experiencing? What should I be doing?” he inquired, ready to begin their training and the Cadets onboarding.
Lieutenant Vincent Yancey
Chief Medical Officer
USS Challenger“The pleasures all mine sir. I have to say i did enjoy reading your paper on Understanding and Mitigating Risks in Alien Pathogen Transmission. It really gave some unique insights i hadn’t considered before.” Ethan raised his hand to scratch awkwardly at his head. “Is that weird? My partners constantly saying i talk too much when i get a bit excited.”
Vincent listened attentively as Cadet Koerner shared his enthusiasm for his paper, a faint smile touching his lips at the mention of his research. “Thank you, Cadet. I’m glad you found it insightful,” he replied warmly, appreciating the acknowledgement of his work. “And it’s not odd at all, Cadet. Enthusiasm is a valuable trait, especially in the field of medicine,” he assured him.
Realizing the offer Ethan shrugged slightly, waving off the help. “Thanks but its an old injury from when i was bouldering on a cliff when i was younger, broke my arm i did, its mainly a phantom pain it’ll pass. My parents thought that if they let it heal naturally it would stop me from pulling the same stunt again. Of course 6 once the cast was off i was clambering back up to try again. Went better the second time.”
His attention shifted to Ethan’s mention of his old injury, his brow furrowing slightly in concern. “I see. It’s important to understand our bodies’ signals, even those from old injuries,” he remarked thoughtfully. “Your resilience and determination are admirable,” Vincent added, a note of respect in his tone.
Realizing he was blabbering slightly Ethan blushed. “Sorry i mean i’m ready to begin orientation whenever your ready Sir.”
Ethan Koerner
Cadet Medical Officer
USS Challenger“No need to apologize, Cadet,” Vincent said with a reassuring smile as Ethan blushed, acknowledging his readiness to begin orientation. “Let’s proceed then. We’ll start with a walkthrough of sickbay and then delve into your responsibilities as a part of our medical team,” he said, gesturing for Ethan to follow him as they began their orientation.
Vincent led the way, guiding Cadet Koerner through the bustling sick bay with practised ease. The hum of medical equipment and the occasional beep of monitors filled the air as they passed by biobeds occupied by patients receiving treatment or resting after procedures. Nurses moved efficiently, attending to various tasks with precision, while medical officers conversed in hushed tones over patient charts.
“We’ll start here,” Vincent said, gesturing towards a workstation where a nurse was inputting data into a terminal. “This is where much of the administrative work takes place. Patient records, inventory management, and scheduling are all managed from this central hub, though not something we expect you to do every day it is always good to learn what our nurses do in case we ever need to catch up on pesky PaDD work” He chuckled, “there is something we must do at the end of every duty shift can you recall what that is?”

Time zone: GMT0 | UK“I’m assuming its input all the cases that we’ve dealt with and the treatments provided” Ethan said, giving the workstation a quick once over. The layout seemed simple enough to use. “Or at least thats what i’ve done in the past. Are there any things specific to a spaceship i need to take into account?”
Cadet Ethan Koerner
Medical officer
USS Challenger“You are mostly correct,” began Yancey, nodding in agreement with Cadet Koerner’s understanding. “The minimum requirement is indeed a numerical log of all patient encounters. However, it’s common practice for medical officers to maintain a duty log, akin to a personal or captain’s log, but focused solely on medical matters and often in greater detail than a simple patient log.”
He paused briefly to ensure his explanation was clear before continuing. “These duty logs are stored within the medical computer system and are regularly transmitted to Starfleet Medical headquarters. Access to these logs is restricted to medical personnel only, unless authorized by the chief medical officer. This ensures the confidentiality of doctor-patient interactions and upholds our duty of care to our patients.”
Yancey concluded his explanation with a slight smile, inviting any questions Cadet Koerner might have. “Any questions so far?” he asked, ready to provide further clarification or guidance as needed.

Time zone: GMT0 | UKEthan nodded his head in understanding. “No that all makes sense thanks. How often do the logs need to be sent back to old folks home?” He winced. “Sorry i mean Starfleet Medical? Bit of an in joke with rest of my class.”
“That’s ok” Yancey said not driving the cart down that road but ventured on with the orientation. “We aim to send them monthly but depending on where the ship is sometimes a week left or right of that is not out of the norm. We have plenty of storage here so there’s no need to keep headquarters apprised of everything all the time” he explained.
He wandered over to a nearby bench and started looking over the tricorders, impressed at how well kept they were. “Whats the procedure when it comes to the senior staff falling ill? Is the best practice to contact you if there’s something serious with them?”
Ethan Koerner
Medical Cadet
USS Challenger“It would be something for you and the on duty nurse to decide, if it’s something within the on duty staff to take care off I shouldn’t need to be contacted, if it’s urgent I’m always contactable.” Yancey observed the Cadet before continuing, “In the rare occasion I am requested by a patient if the matter is not urgent direct them to my calendar, but everyone should be content that any of my medical staff are more then capable of handling most medical matters.”

Time zone: GMT0 | UK“Ah brill thanks for clearing all that up.” Ethan turned his head back to focusing on Yancy. “Anything you want me to start on?”

USS Challenger“Plenty of things to cover, but I understand your primary focus is to grasp the operations of a starship beyond the confines of the academy,” Yancey acknowledged, emphasizing the practical aspect of Cadet Koerner’s learning experience. “Your duty roster and class assignments will be waiting for you in your quarters. If you have any questions or need clarification on anything, please don’t hesitate to reach out.”
He paused, his expression warm and encouraging. “There are two key things to keep in mind: first, this is an active starship, so be prepared for the unexpected. And second, you’re here to learn and grow. Welcome aboard, Cadet. I’m confident you’ll make the most of this opportunity.” With a nod of assurance, Yancey offered a final smile before allowing Cadet Koerner to continue settling into his new environment.

Ethan smiled back at Yancey before turning and leaving to find out the locations of all the various bits of medical equipment in the medbay. Going over to one of the nurses calibrating the equipment he gestured towards the remaining pieces. “You need a hand with that?”

Yancey observed the Cadet as he got to work, a smile playing on his lips as he crossed his arms. He chuckled softly to himself, shaking his head in amusement. It seemed he needed to brush up on his Earth colloquial sayings. What on Earth was a shanty? And how did it fit into a sea?
OOC: Great post! - I really enjoyed it, don’t be afraid to start any up in future with me even if its to not for Yancey but you fancy trying something else within the medical world!
