Lieutenant Yancey adjusted the collar of his uniform, a mix of excitement and nerves bubbling beneath his composed exterior. The orders had come in; it was time for him to report to the executive officer’s office. As he approached the imposing entrance, the automatic doors swished open, revealing a corridor that seemed to stretch infinitely.

The executive officer’s office, a place of both mystery and authority, awaited at the end of the corridor. Yancey took a steadying breath, reminding himself of the countless hours of training and years spent on other ships under CO’s and XO’s that had brought him to this moment. Despite having done this routine before, this time felt different. He, after all, had applied for this position and was accepted based on his merit.

He stepped forward, the sound of his boots echoing in the otherwise silent corridor, less for the ambient noises of a working ship. Arriving at the executive officer’s door, Yancey paused for a moment, his hand hovering over the chime button. The anticipation built as he pressed it, signalling his presence.

Pilar’s eyes focused on the door as the chime announced Lieutenant Yancey’s arrival. The door slid open, revealing the new Chief Medical Officer. She noted he was well put together of and invited him in with a smile and a friendly hand gesture. “Come in Lieutenant. Welcome to the Challenger.”

Her office was neat with an assortment of Vulcan and Romulan artifacts and trinkets, notably there wasn’t anything to represent her own Risian/Argelian culture.

“I am glad you are here, but I have to ask what’s the purpose? Usually someone, besides the captain, only show up when there is a problem. Hopefully everything went well with your boarding?”

Vincent swept the room briefly, and had he not been aware of the Commander’s Risian heritage, he might have assumed he had stepped into a Vulcan’s office. His eyes eventually landed on the Commander, noting that her personnel file didn’t quite capture her presence, a discrepancy he expected given her Risian background. Remaining professional and disciplined, he spoke, “Yes, Commander. My on-boarding has proceeded smoothly; there are no noteworthy issues. The efficiency of the crew here has been commendable.”

Taking a moment, he continued, “I wanted to express my gratitude for accepting my request to join this ship. I understand that, typically, department heads for academy ships are chosen by the senior leadership of the academy. Therefore, I am appreciative of the opportunity extended to me.”

Pilar nodded, appreciating the formality in Vincent’s demeanor. She motioned towards the chairs in front of her desk, signaling for him to take a seat.
“Well, Lieutenant Yancey, it’s a pleasure to have you aboard the Challenger. I believe in assembling a diverse and capable team. Your background and expertise will undoubtedly contribute to the success here on the Challenger,” she remarked, her tone welcoming.

“I’m sure you’ve familiarized yourself with the medical facilities on the ship. As you know this ship is the first stop for cadets before they get their main assignment on another ship. You have a big job in ensuring their well-being. If there’s anything specific you need or any adjustments you’d like to make, feel free to let me know. Now that all that is out of the way. Tell me about yourself. Most people find being around a bunch of cadets annoying, they would rather work with a more experienced crew, so tell me why did you choose the Challenger?”

Vincent took a moment to consider his response, and while it wasn’t a rehearsed statement, he had a clear understanding of his perspective. “In my view, exploration of space is undeniably commendable. Whether one aspires to be the Kirk of the universe, channel the logic of Spock, embody the leadership of Picard, heal like Crusher, or navigate the unknown like Janeway, there’s a crucial, albeit less acknowledged, aspect to these legendary explorers. Someone had to teach them how to venture into the stars, how to represent the United Federation of Planets and Starfleet. To me, there’s no more rewarding endeavor than guiding young, enthusiastic cadets from a state of not knowing to a point of curiosity. It’s about instilling in them the skills and knowledge to aid people, heal wounds, mend broken bones, and uncover medical marvels.”

He paused, letting the weight of his words settle before adding, “In essence, it’s about shaping the future trailblazers, the unsung heroes who lay the foundation for the renowned explorers of tomorrow.”

Pilar placed both hands face down on her desk, absorbing Vincent’s thoughtful response. She admired his passion for the role and the broader mission of the Challenger.

“That’s a commendable perspective, Lieutenant Yancey,” Pilar acknowledged, her eyes fixed on his. “Shaping the future trailblazers is indeed a profound responsibility. The foundation you help lay here on the Challenger will ripple through the cosmos. Now, I’m curious about your approach to leadership. As the Chief Medical Officer on this ship, it’s not just about knowledge and skills; it’s about guiding a team, making tough decisions, and driving a collaborative environment. How do you envision leading your medical team on this ship?”

Pilar’s gaze was attentive, awaiting Vincent’s insights into his leadership philosophy. She believed in a crew that not only excelled in their individual roles or skills but also worked as a unit.
