“Captain, you’ve arrived just in time. We’ve deployed a probe to conduct a comprehensive scan of the area,” Pilar informed him. “Lieutenant Lis is overseeing the preparations, focusing on detecting any anomalies or irregularities that could indicate the presence of our missing crew members.”

She paused briefly before continuing, her voice filled with determination. “Time is of the essence, Captain. We find ourselves in a more hazardous environment than initially anticipated, with a field of asteroids. I have already informed the crew that our top priority is to locate and safely retrieve Commander Cole and Ensign Metwin. Meanwhile, we will spare no effort in gathering information and maintaining a vigilant watch for any significant changes or signals that could guide us in the right direction.”

“I have no doubt about the crews readiness Commander,” Aaron said as he stepped to the side from the turbolift. He motioned her to sit back down. “The bridge is yours Commander, and it sounds like we are just about as ready as we can be.”

“Captain, if you’d like, I can begin a scan for the Commander and Ensign’s lifesigns?”

-Lieutenant Zunara: Chief of Security-

“Commander?” Aaron asked looking towards Pilar. So far she had handled everything perfectly, and he was willing to see how she would handle the mission.

Pilar nodded, acknowledging Lieutenant Zunara’s offer. “Thank you, Lieutenant. That would be a prudent course of action. Please proceed with the lifesign scan and report any findings immediately.”

Pilar turned her attention back to Captain Foley. “Captain, with your permission, I suggest we divide our resources to cover more ground efficiently. We can deploy additional probes and set up a coordinated search pattern to maximize our chances of locating Commander Cole and Ensign Metwin. I recommend assigning teams to different sections of the asteroid field and maintaining constant communication to share any discoveries or potential leads.”

She glanced at the viewscreen, observing the scattered asteroids that filled the area. “The asteroid field poses a significant challenge, but I believe we have the expertise and technology to navigate it safely. We should also remain cautious of any potential threats or hostile entities that may be hiding amidst the asteroids. Our security teams will be on high alert.”

Pilar paused, then added, “If we encounter any unusual phenomena or encounter any signs of interference, we should investigate further. It’s possible that the anomalies mentioned earlier might have a connection to the disappearance of our crew members.”

“Aye aye Commander,” Zunara replied, his hands flying across the panels of his console like a pianist at his first concert.

“I agree with your assessment Commander,” Aaron said nodding. “There is to much area to cover, and we have a clock. It may be prudent to launch shuttles as well to circle around to the far side of the asteroid field and work their way back towards us.”

Aaron looked back at the view screen, “has anything strange been logged about this particular field in the past?”

Pilar responded to the Captain’s question. “Based on our records, there have been some reports of navigational anomalies and intermittent sensor interference in this particular asteroid field. However, the data is limited, and there are no records of any previous disappearances or incidents like the one we are currently facing. It’s possible that the anomalies we detected earlier might be related to these past reports, but we’ll need to investigate further to establish a definitive connection.”

She tapped a few commands into her console to display the available historical data on the asteroid field. “I recommend having our science team analyze the past records to identify any patterns or potential danger zones within the field. Additionally, we should instruct the shuttle teams to proceed with caution and report any unusual occurrences.”

Pilar then turned to address the whole bridge crew, “Let’s proceed with the division of resources as discussed. Lieutenant Zunara, please coordinate with the other department heads to allocate our teams effectively. And Captain, I believe it would be best if we stay on the bridge to oversee the operation from here.”

Aaron nodded as he looked at the screen showing the anomalies that had been reported in the asteroid field over time. Pilar would probably prefer to be out with the away teams helping to do what they could to find the missing people, but this, this was right up his alley. There was always some sort of pattern, nothing was ever truly random. Especially not something that had persisted for this long.

“Agreed. Launch the shuttles. Let’s find the Commander and Ensign.”

“Captain, Commander, with your permission, I’d like to lead one of the shuttle teams to find the missing crew. You never know when you need to be prepared.”

One of the cadets on the bridge was monitoring the sensors but also listening to the conversation. Their stomach felt tight as they tried to figure out if they should say something, but it felt kind of obvious. “Ummm, Sirs?” they stammered. “There’s only the one asteroid, isn’t there? Would we really need more than one team in that case?”

Aaron blinked a few times, he had been looking at the different anomalies that had been reported, and not looking at the current sensor scans. But as he switched the views, he saw only the single asteroid.

“Thank you for the correction Cadet,” Aaron said standing up straight again. “That does greatly narrow our search area. Though I’d still like to direct probes to fly through the entire anomalous area so we can get some more detailed scans of what is out there.”
