Since 0500, Jack was up and pacing his quarters. He and only just arrived on the ship and guided to his quarters. There he chewed on one of his fingers. A nervous habit he built up while studying at the academy. This was his first assignment, and he was worried about what impressions he would give.Afterall, his professors always told him that he had warp engine for a mouth. Jack was always the curious type, which lead to him always being filled with questions. It would be to such a degree that his professors often complained. But it was one that led him to get praise in many varied fields such as xenobiology, astrometrics, and environmental science.
On any other day, this wouldn’t bother him one bit. He would simply be hyper focused on whatever task was ahead of him, or a problem he found needing to solve. But today, he was more aware of his social dysfunction and hoped to taper it.

The young man paced in his room muttering greetings for about 2 hours. The computer beeped with a message.
“As requested previously, the time is now 0700. I repeat, it is now 0700. You have preset a reminder for this time.”
Jack cursed himself. It didn’t feel like he was prepared in the least. But nevertheless, he left his quarters and walked hastily to the turbolift.
“Deck 1, Science Lab.”
He took a deep breath as the lift beeped in response. Jack muttered his greeting once more before the doors open.
After some time, he arrived 15 minutes early. As Jack took his first steps toward the Chief Science Officer’s office, his eyes darted around.
From what he heard, his superior was a Trill Symbiont. The Trill’s symbiotic nature with another race was quite fascinating to him. A race that can carry hundreds and possibly thousand of years of history. He would normally had loads of questions regarding it, but resisted the urge to blurt this time.
When he approached the door, he pressed the call button to announce his presence.
“C- Cadet Thatchter reporting for assignment.”
“Come,” called the voice from the other side of the door. As it opened to admit the cadet, Demil stood up from his desk and walked over to escort the new arrival in. “Welcome aboard,” the Trill stated. The room was impeccably organized, with a small silver conference table containing consoles and displays and ringed by chairs taking up the majority of the space. In the corner sat Demil’s simple, standard-issue desk and a shelf of personal belongings. The CSO guided his new scientist to the table. “Would you like any refreshments, Cadet?” Demil asked, subtly running his thumb over his index finger repeatedly. “I’ve read your file, your accomplishments are notable. I see we have a common interest in anthropology.”
After fetching whatever Jack requested and a cup of tea for himself, the lieutenant returned to the table and took a seat opposite Jack, pulling up the cadet’s file for easy reference on a console in the table. He looked back towards Jack, returning to rubbing circles on his finger.

Jack’s eyes wandered as he got distracted by Demil’s office. He inhaled deeper before focusing himself. “Uh- Thank you, Sir. Oh uh Raktajino, please.” Jack took his time finding a seat in front of Demil’s desk. He took a sip of his Raktajino after Demil handed to him.
Fortunately, his nerves seem to calm down a bit. “Yes, I partook in a few archaeological digs with a couple of my professors during a semester break. It was quite alot of fun and just made me more curious about the history of a civilization’s development. Especially some of the long dead starfaring civilizations. It’s interesting to think that there are many races that explored the unknown like us. And their tales have yet to be discovered. ”
Jack seem to be at ease once he got to talking. He lifted his head to Demil. “But for now, I guess I should be focusing on the present. I’ve been a bit nervous about my first assignment. But at the same time, excited. So, sir, where does a cadet like me start?”
