Jhathe had found her department head’s office quite easily, thanks to a combination of the computers direction and tactile markings on the wall. She had spent so much time worrying about navigating in space, she had forgotten to be nervous about anything else, but now that she was here, pressing the chime felt harder than she had expected. She took a calming breath, sensing the hustle and bustle around her. She could feel a focused mind within the office which could only belong to the Lieutenant. Slightly steadier, she pressed the chime, vaguely sensing her new DH’s attention shift.

-Jhathe, Scientist

Demil looked up from his several spreadsheets of paperwork at the chime. “Enter,” he called, setting the work to the side and straightening his already-impeccable uniform. As the door opened, he stood and took a few steps towards it, noting the cadet standing in his doorway. “Ah, Cadet Jhathe, come in,” he said, ushering the Aenar into the room. “I’m Lieutenant Demil Lis. Take a seat, if you will.”
There were several seats available in the space near his desk, arranged as if there was a small conference table supposed to be there that had not yet been placed. The room itself was fairly spacious, situated in the middle of the deck 4 lab complex with doors to access most of the labs. Demil’s desk was pushed to the far back corner near the door to the general lab, with the oval of chairs more towards the center of the room. There were several boxes still behind the desk, presumably packed items.
Demil sat opposite the chair Jhathe picked, pulling a PADD from his pocket. “I received a notice you’d be boarding and read your official file, but I’d also like to hear about you from you. Tell me whatever you think is pertinent.”

OOC: Excellent first post! Welcome aboard!

OOC: Thank you! It’s very exciting to RP again!

“Of course Lieutenant!” Jhathe shifted in her seat, somewhat unprepared to give an informal resume. “As you likely know, I’m a biologist. I specialized in biostatistics and population genetics at the Academy, so I’m quite handy at math. That’s all in my file sir, I,” she trailed off. “I’m not sure what to say, I mean, it’s not like I have a favorite color,” she gestured to her eyes, amused.

“Understandably,” Demil chuckled, if a bit stiffly. “Your file is quite impressive, and I look forward to having you working with our biology and genetics teams. Perhaps we can have a discussion on genetics sometime. It is one of the fields I specialize in as well.” He shifted a bit to the side, opening his formal posture slightly. “I don’t commonly encounter Aenar in Starfleet. I expect working with you will be enlightening into your culture,” he noted.

“I know that there aren’t many Aenar that join the Fleet, but I must believe there’s a solution to Andoria’s decline, and we aren’t finding it at home. I know it has to be out here somewhere.” She flushed slightly. “Please don’t misunderstand, I’d never place Andoria above my duties. It just… always occupies a place in the back of my mind.”

“I fully understand, Cadet,” Demil said, voice entirely warm for the first time in the conversation. “Trill occupies a similar position in mine, though our people do not face a similar situation to yours. In fact, I might say Trill occupies my mind more literally, as I have been joined with a symbiont and therefore another lifetime of experiences that sometimes influence me.” He shook his head slightly, returning himself to focus. “I sincerely hope you will achieve that hope of finding your solution. On that vein, what other goals do you plan to achieve during your time on this ship and as a Starfleet officer?”

Jhathe relaxed at hearing his genuine response, and even laughed at his joke. “Is it too cliche to say I want to help people? I know many think of scientists as… out of touch, like we just sit in our labs and run experiments, but I believe scientists are those who see patterns no one else will notice. We can help with so many things, like diplomacy! If we have the data of a culture we’re making first contact with, our data analysis could create a cultural briefing that would leave the away team more informed, and then we might be able to avoid the typical,” she paused, trying to remember what her instructor had called it. “Ah, ‘growing pains.’”

-Jhathe, Scientist

Demil smiled softly. “I suppose that’s why we’re all here, ultimately. It’s a good reminder of why Starfleet is important. We could all be scientists on a planet somewhere, sitting in our labs cut off from most people, but we’re here where we can help people.” He thought for a moment. “We can indeed help smooth over first contact, in fact that was a large part of my last position before I accepted the transfer here. You’d be surprised how much biology can play into that.” His gaze shifted back down to his PADD. “What other things would you like to accomplish?”
