“I was assigned to the Ark Angel out of the Academy and was a junior science officer, under Lt. Belmont for most of my time there. Shortly after she left, under Lt. Azon, I was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade and put in charge of genetics research. Not too long after that, I was transferred here,” Demil said. “It took me most of my time on the Ark Angel to get enough confidence to pursue higher responsibility positions, but I’m here now!” The young trill lieutenant smiled, pausing by the door of the conference room to allow her entry first.

“Yes, you are.” She said with a smile as she walked into the conference room and took a seat in one of the chairs. ” The XO on that ship gave you a wonderful review and highly recommended you for the CSO position on the Challenger. Let me ask you a question. Why did you lack the initial confidence to move up the chain?”

Demil sat opposite the XO. “I skipped a couple grades all the way back in elementary school, and have felt like I have to be the best at what I do since, in order to keep pace with my peers. People didn’t often take me seriously, although that dropped off somewhat as I got older. Regardless, I wasn’t ready to go up even more for a while, and it took a couple very good leaders to encourage me otherwise.”

Pilar nodded. “You will be running the science department. However this job is more than just running a department, you will be shaping the future of Starfleet. The Challenger is the first step for new hopeful Starfleet officers. It’s highly important you keep them busy and engaged. Just like those good leaders encouraged you, now that task falls on you. You must encourage the incoming cadets and make sure they are excelling.”
Demil nodded. “I understand.”
“Do you have any questions for me?”

“What day-to-day tasks will I be responsible for?” he asked, pulling out a PADD to take notes.

“As I stated before you will primarily be responsible for keeping the cadets occupied with tasks. Especially in between missions. I would recommend a department-level check-in to see how they are all doing and this will allow them to bring questions to you if they have them. If anything unusual happens, you should immediately inform me or the Captain. Preferably in that order. I usually take issues directly to the Captain. However, I know Captain Foley has an open-door policy. If I am ever unavailable or take too long to respond back feel free to bypass me and go directly to him.” She paused then said, “When dealing with the Cadets be sure to present an air of authority but do not be too forceful. There is a balance that has to happen. They must know you are in charge but you must also be personable. Does that make sense?”

“Yes, ma’am,” Demil said. He put the PADD back away and stood up. “Is there anything else you’d like to discuss?” He tapped his fingers on the side of his leg as he waited for a response, smiling nervously.

“Not really.” Pilar stood too, “Let me show you around the ship. We will start on the bridge. I’ll introduce you to everyone, then we can head to the lounge for a quick bite to eat, then finally stop by the science offices, where your office will be.” She motioned for him to follow her as she continued, “What is the first thing you plan to do after you have settled in?”

“Get a log of the experiments and studies currently ongoing and a list of the science personnel,” Demil said, “so I know what’s happening and who I have. Likely review duty schedules and make sure they make sense, but as long as they’re reasonable there’s no reason to disrupt routines. I’ll probably briefly introduce myself to the department.”

“That sounds like a reasonable plan. I would also suggest that you hold a brief department meeting to introduce yourself to the Cadets.” As she exited the room and the doors to the turbo-lift opened she ordered it to take them to the bridge. “Missions can be complicated sometimes. I would suggest you create a plan on who is to do what during a mission. Maybe some cadets can be on the away team, if there is one, while some of them stay on the ship and analyze data.”

“Yes, Ma’am,” Demil said, noting down her suggestions (that he seemed to have taken as de facto orders). “Day to day, will I be expected mostly in the labs or on the bridge?”

“During missions, you should delegate the lab work to a trusted cadet. You will be needed on the bridge to man the science station and accompany the away team.” She slightly turned toward him as they walked side by side, “You will have plenty to do and you might feel like you need to be in two places at once.” As they stepped onto the bridge she introduced him to the officers on the bridge. “Everyone this is Lieutenant Lis. Our new Chief Science Officer.” Then she walked over to a console and a workstation. “This is where you will work when you are on the bridge.” She held her hand out proudly toward the area. “I can’t understand anything that is displaying on this console, but I am sure you do.” She said with a smile.

Demil walked to look at the console, eyes scanning over it. “Yes, it does all make sense.” He turned slightly to Halcyone, “When are we expecting our next mission?” he asked, a portion of attention apparently still focused on the console and the constant flow of data there.

“Can’t say. We take them as they come which means we must be prepared for the unexpected.” She placed her hands behind her back and said, “Follow me. There is one other things I need to show you.”
