If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it’s probably a duck. After the standard rotation where the graduating cadets went off to their new assignments and the new batch of cadets arrived for their training cruise, the USS Challenger was sent out on a typical patrol run from Sol to Vulcan. Cruising along at Warp 7.25, the 16.5 ly journey would take approximately 8 days and 4 hours. It was enough time for the cadets to settle into starship operations and get a feel for everything before tackling any specific assignment the ship might be given.
3 days into their journey, something of note happened…
On the bridge, there was a ping from the communications array: it was a distress call.
~Mischief Maker
Pilar was filling in for Commander Foley when the distress call came in. As the distinct ping reached her ears, her eyes turned toward the communications console and she looked at the cadet who was manning the station. “It seems we have received what appears to be an important if not urgent message. Please put it on the screen.”
Halcyone, XO
Demil looked up from the science station upon the ping and subsequent order. He brushed a lock of hair out of his eyes and sat back, watching the screen with mind already switching to “catalogue important information”.
Lt. Demil Lis, CSOSorazo was sitting at his chair on the bridge when the call came through. He prepared himself to notice their inflections in the voices and other background sounds.
Lt. Commander Sorazo Dar, CNS
The call had a bit of distortion but came through clear =/\=To any nearby vessel, this is Commander Naomi Cole with Ensign Metwin with Starfleet. We’ve suffered serious damage to our shuttle from an unknown phenomenon and are trying to set down on the nearest body which seems to be a rogue asteroid. If you receive this message, please send help, or let Starfleet know. We’re aiming for a flat area on the north side, but we’re coming in faster than is safe and thrusters are not responding. We’re…=/\= The distress call ended abruptly.

Pilar looked at the communications cadet and said, “Do we know the approximate coordinates and original time stamp on the message? If they landed”, she didn’t want to say the word crashed, “on a rouge asteroid they would only be able to survive for a short period of time therefore we need to determine where they are quick.”
To Lieutenant Lis, she said, “Scan the area for possible nearby asteroids where Commander Cole and Ensign Metwin’s shuttle could have landed.”
Her attention turned back to the communications officer, “If we can get those coordinates with the timestamp we could estimate where they are.”Halcyone, XO
“Aye, ma’am,” Demil said, fingers already flying over the console. “Also including a search for any Starfleet signatures in close proximity to any of those asteroids.” He finished inputting his scan criteria and hit the button to start scanning, briefly turning to the communications station. “Where should I focus, cadet?”
Lieutenant Demil Lis, CSO
“There’s Rogue Asteroid 7OT381 approximately 2 lightyears from our current location,” the cadet said.
Demil nodded and went back to his console for a moment. “I’m not seeing anything else particularly viable as a location, ma’am,” he reported.
When Sorazo heard the message he knew that they were in trouble. The Captain was steady in voice as much as she could be and the only thing that bothered Sorazo was the unexpected termination of the message. “Commander Halcyone. I was thinking that we should also see if we can see traces or warp signatures from other vessels. That Captain on the message made a steady voice transmission and wouldn’t have done so if they would’ve been far enough away from the asteroid. So either the asteroid had something that jammed the signal or another vessel in the area did that. But I am no tactician madam, just my thought.”
Lt. Commander Sorazo Dar, CNS
She gave the counselor a quick nod.
Scans showed that the Challenger was the nearest ship. The asteroid was currently in a rarely visited pocket of space that had no inhabited systems and was between major shipping lanes. Most ships went in directions well away from this small area.

“I recommend we get closer and investigate. Once we’re close I can run more detailed scans and hopefully find their lifesigns or at least the shuttle.” He tapped his combadge. =/\= “Lis to NCadet Zayin. Please suspend any experiments and operations that will require use of the primary sensor array until my authorization is given.” =/\= He rubbed circles on his hand with his thumb absentmindedly as he watched Halcyone, waiting for the next set of orders.Lieutenant Demil Lis
CSO
Pilar nodded at Lieutenant Lis then said, “Sounds good. Let’s move in closer to the area.” she said to the helmsman. “My biggest fear is that they crashed on the asteroid and that caused the abrupt end to the transmission. They could be injured. Let’s hope for the best.”
Although she was not familiar with the part of space they were in, it seemed remote and there are no habited systems in the vicinity. “They were on an unusual trajectory. I cannot imagine their navigation systems would have directed them in this area. I wonder if they were lost.” It was a question to ask Commander Cole, if and when the Challenger was able to retrieve her and her Ensign Metwin.
