Kylie Brecker casually strolled around deck nine. She seemed thoughtful for a bit as she subconsciously headed towards the Nine Forward Lounge. After a few moments, she realized she stood at the closed door lost in her own head. The human woman chuckled to herself and muttered to herself about missing an old hobby. Abruptly she headed towards the turbolift as an idea sparked in her head. Stepping onto the turbolift she seemed somewhat excited betraying her usually collected demeanor. “Deck Five.” She said quickly and watched as the door shut, and she grabbed onto a railing on the side as the lift shot up heading to her specified deck. A moment later there is a ding and a soft =^=Deck Five=^= came from within the lift. The cadet wasted no time as she hurried off of the turbolift. Quickly she to Holodeck 1 and checks if it is in use. Seeing the compartment was not being utilized at the moment her grin grew even wider. Stepping to the door she speaks softly. “Computer Simulate the Hell’s Kitchen restaurant circa 2010.”
She waited a moment as the computer worked on her request. She waited on the doors before they opened. The doors opened to a street in Manhattan, revealing a grand building in front of her. She stared at the neon lit entrance of the building looking thoughtful as her mind wandered to some of the technical aspects of the science behind making such glowing lights. Her mind didn’t stick to the task too long as she stepped up the stairs and into the building. Stepping inside her breath was sucked away as she took in the arcature. She looked around a bit before heading back towards her true goal. The kitchen. She seemed to be in awe of the stations and implements of the kitchen looking at the tools and gadgets each neatly in their places. She smiled a gleam in her eye.
In her youth on the ship she was raised on she remembered the fits the protean resequencer, and replicators would give in giving cooked or prepared foods. She found it odd and strange that they could get raw materials… or things that were burned so badly that it was charcoal. So they had had their ingredients sequenced raw, and someone had made a makeshift kitchen on their ship. She couldn’t for the life of her remember how she got drawn into cooking the first time… but now it was a job that she found she missed. She took measure and tested a few things she didn’t know what they were for or what they did and eventually familiarized herself with the tools in the kitchen. She takes quite some time doing this, memorizing each.

Dar was on his way to the holodeck that he reserved. It was the first time in a long time, that he was going to use one. Approaching the door, he noticed a program already running. “Hmm. This is odd. Hells Kitchen? What in Celestia is that?” He pondered for a moment trying to recall where he had heard the word Hell before, and it donned on him. It was from Earth and an older popular religion that faded away into obscurity when people finally realized that gods were all man made and invented to either explain what they couldn’t at the time or to control the masses. Either way, some people didn’t want it to leave and others did. There were benefits and problems with it and all religions. He knew that there were still some cults or sects that followed it still and he wondered again..then looked back up at the door. “Is this person or being a follower of this cult? I think I am going to have a peak and find out.” He said to no one but himself. Going in as the doors opened he was aww struck at the grandeur of the building. Could this be what their churches looked like? Walking he saw a lady in a kitchen looking for stuff. He decided to wait a bit before calling out to see what she was doing. He was clearly in a kitchen, but is this Hell?

Lt. Commander Sorazo Dar, CNS

Hearing the sounds of steps on the marble tile, Kylie looked up her face gained a curious look. “Are you part of the program, or…” She trailed off as she could not recall having seen this person before. She casually sets down the stand mixer in her hands, as she was holding one up, admiring the construction of the device. She bites her lip for a moment hoping it was part of the program and not another person. In her mind only echoed I hope it’s part of the program… I might just die otherwise
Cadet Kylie Brecker (Engineer)

He thought about saying he was part of the program and acting the bit briefly but decided against it. Bowing deeply and speaking as he rose; “Hello madam. My name is Sorazo Dar. I originally had this holodeck reserved for this time and noticed that there was a program already running. I am very sorry, as I would have normally left and came back at a later time, but the title of your holo intrigued me like a puzzle to a Vulcan. I thought this was a religious program giving the name but could not figure out why the word kitchen was attached to it. I decided that this was a good time to learn about one of Earths religions. I am a Trill you see and know nothing of the sort. Again. I apologize for disturbing you and for alarming you.” The 40 year old Trill said.

Lt. Commander Sorazo Dar, CNS

Kylie opened her mouth then closed it, then opened it again. Her face turned a light cherry blossom shade of pink as she seemed to be flustered. After a moment to recollect herself and get her reaction under control her face becomes slightly stoic. “Dar… oh yes the new councilor right? I remember seeing an announcement made. It is a pleasure to meet you sir, I am Cadet Kylie Brecker. I didn’t realise that the holodeck was reserved, I appologize. No.. not a religion I remember hearing about it, apparantly it was a big resturant back in the 21st century.. I didnt have much to go on… the ship I grew up on… our synthisizer never worked right… either we would sequence raw foods, or if we tried to synthise anything cooked it would cause it to be burned, or ruined in one way or another… so we had found some old records on cooking… we made a make shift kitchen and learned to cook. It became one of my favorite things to do. After hearing about this paticular resturant then I figured the federation would have a program on it… and well I supposed that I would indulge myself on my favorite past time.” She explained to him the light traces of embarrassment traced into her voice.
Cadet Kylie Brecker Engineer

Now it was Dar’s turn to be embarrassed. “Ah. I see. And no need to apologize for the using this room little lady. You go right ahead and keep using it. Well for another three hours that is, because that is all I booked it for.” Looking around a bit before going on again. “And yes. I am the new counselor. Lieutenant Commander Sorazo Dar at your service madam.” He said bowing deeply. Raising back up he spoke again. “I rarely use honorifics and titles. Those things come and go but I will always be Sorazo Dar. And I apologize again for disturbing you in your fantasy. Now that I know what it really is, I feel kind of embarrassed thinking it was a religious program. So, I am going to go ahead and leave you to it Miss Brecker but before I do, I want to say, that what you and the people on your old ship did was very smart. You adapted and overcame a problem and you are here now for it. But if you ever want to cook for real again, just let me know. I am no professional but I am a very good cook. I do it whenever I can, because to me, it tastes better.” He waited to hear what she had to say before he left.

Sorazo Dar, CNS

She blinked for a moment before her smile grew. She gave a nod. ” Thank you Mr. Dar. I too noticed that. The resequenced food is good… but it’s missing something… I suppose there is something about making it by hand, just makes the flavor all that more....” She paused a moment as she brought her left hand to her lips “… more.” She added seemingly at a loss for words. Well I had heard that some holodecks were set up with access to resequencers… so cooking may be possible here on the holodeck. That being said, I have not heard much about the Trill. And well while my unusual hobby may haps been discovered, it would be interesting to learn more about the cuisine of other extraterrestrial species.” She says offering him a friendly smile, her body language noted that her usual temperament tended to be towards a gruff outward appearance. She was seemingly warmed up to him very quickly, mayhaps due to his discovery and offer towards her hobby.

“The secret ingredient is Love my dear. Love is what makes the universe go round. Time, dedication to ones craft and love, make things much better.” He took what she said as a chance to move closer to her and join with her in her hobby. Moving forward but cautiously, He came to the other side of the table/counter from her. “I do believe that these holodecks are equipped with what you need to cook and I would be more than happy to show you a couple of Trill dishes, but first, can you show me one of your favorites? I would be most grateful to see, help and learn about that as well.”

Sorazo Dar, CNS

Bump

She gave a thoughtful look, “I suppose.” She nodded and smiled and stepped to the side allowing him to the cooking station as he came around. Hearing his words she looked thoughtful and nodded, taking her place again. “So… in that case, are there any dietary restrictions? I remember in my xenology studies that some cultures and xenobiological structures couldn’t accept some foods that we might enjoy on Earth. ” She asked looking thoughtful, she thought she remembered something about Trill not eating meats, but she was unsure if she remembered it correctly.
Cadet Kylie Brecker

“Perfect”. HE said as he stepped around the counter. Glancing at the cooking area and noticing where things were, he shook his head. “Not that many. As a species as a whole, we do not eat meat, but I do since I have been away from Trill for the better part of 25 years and have broadened my horizons so to speak. But I do not like spicy foods. I hope that helps. So Miss Brecker, What are you going to prepare and how do you want to utilize me?”

Lt. Commander Sorazo Dar, CNS

Kylie smiles and looks thoughtful. “One of my favorites that we learned how to make was Shepards pie.” She moved around the kitchen grabed various bowls and ingredients. She looked thoughtful for a moment. “Well if you don’t mind, while I prepare some vegetables could you cut up and boil some potatos?” She asked as she grabbed two cutting boards placed one infront of him. She grabbed a chopping knife and a peeler, she put them next to her board before she grabbed some corn and began to decobb the corn into a bowl.
Cadet Kylie Brecker (Engineer)

He eyes widened. “Shepards pie…” He said in amazement. “I have only heard stories about this legendary dish of yours. I cannot wait to try it!” Looking around when she asked about the potatoes he smiled. “Of course madam. I am at your disposal. I would guess you want the potatoes diced?” After she told him how she wanted them cut up he then went and got the potatoes and washed his hands then washed the potatoes. Filling up one of the bowls halfway with water he placed it next to him. Noticing that she placed what he needed next to her instead of by him he thought that she was going to need them as well and then looked for a peeler and knife as well. Finding what he wanted he brought them back over to his area and placed them down. Realizing that his sleeves would get in the way he rolled them up and washed his hands again and began to peel them, throwing the peels in the trash, then set about dicing the potatoes and placing them in the bowl of water.

Lt. Commander Sorazo Dar, CNS

She smiled and shrugged. “It doesn’t really matter how their cut up. After boiling them, we will be mashing them.” She explained as she hummed softly to herself, her smile one of content joy. Casually she took the corn and rinses the kernels. She used a colander, poured the corn into it, then back into the bowl after she is done washing them. Then she added some peas to the bowl with the corn. Grabbing a couple of carrots, she rinses them off before setting into peeling then chopping them. “So, if you don’t mind me asking. Where were you born?” She said her tone jovial.
Cadet Kylie Brecker (Engineer)

“Oh.” He said in response to her about the mashing of the potato’s. “That makes sense.” He watched and listened to her as she hummed and had a truly genuine smile and calm about her. She was in her element and he felt truly proud to be a part of this. This is what it is all about, he said in his mind as he smiled. “I do not mind madam. I was born in the capitol city of Mak’ala. My family owned a villa overlooking one of the oceans. It was nice to have to sunlight pour in from that direction as you opened the huge double glass doors. I guess humans called them French doors. We would have breakfast out there on the terrace listening to the waves and birds. It was a very nice time. I spent a lot of time out there, even in the stormy weather. It was good to see the two sides of the same coin. That is what lead me to be a Counselor. I was fascinated in seeing what other things or other beings had on the other side so to speak. Where are you from if I may ask?”

Sorazo Dar, CNS

Kylie nodded looking thoughtful. She poured the diced carrots from the cutting board to the bowl she was mixing vegetable ingredients in. Giving a small laugh she then takes the bowl over to the sink and washed the vegie mixture another time while she explained her background. “Well… I’ve been in space all of my life. I’ve maybe made planetfall a dozen times or so in my two and a half decades. I was born on an old Federation ship, that was decommissioned and then sold off to someone wanting to start another galactic trade business. It is an Antares Class Freighter, named the Dioportha.” She explains calmly as she drains the water out of the bowl. “I was born there and was on that ship pretty much until I went to the academy.” She grabbed a pan and set it onto the stove turning on the burner below to a medium heat. “I know you said that you are willing to eat meat. Traditionally the dish comes with it, though we could possibly make an interesting meat substitute from some tofu or something.” She asks as she headded back over to the fridge and put a hand on the handle ready to open the door. “I will leave it up to you Sir.” She said giving a pleasant smile.
Cadet Kylie Brecker (Engineer)

“Wow! That is truly an epic story to be told child. I knew about the ship but didn’t know you were born and raised on it as well.” He thought a moment. “Meat is madam. I dislike tofu and would rather throw-up something tasty if I had to.” He grinned. What do you want to do while this bakes?”

Sorazo Dar, CNS

Kylie nodded and grabbed two pounds of lean ground beef from the fridge. She headed over to the pan and poured in a little extra virgin olive oil, and swirled it around the pan. Though it was a little awkward, she seemed to be practiced in doing this, as if she had done it many times. “I don’t mind talking. Why not get a session in whilst waiting.” She gave a chuckle and then her face went back to more of a neutral expression. Well you’ve seen more of my personal off duty side than others. I’m not a recreational person… either I’m working or not.” She says softly as she slid the ground beef into the pan. She grabbed a spatula and began the slightly tedious work of breaking up the hamburger. “The potatoes should be ready to be mashed.” She said softly as she continued to break up the meat while it was starting to brown.
Cadet Kylie Brecker (Engineer)

He was taken aback at her suggestion of a session. “If you want one, then it would be my pleasure. “Why aren’t you more outgoing or social? And let me be the first to tell you that that is not something to be ashamed of or to think one is weird. We all have our quarks and mannerisms. You do not have to do anything that you do not want to do my dear lady.” He looked around when she said about the potato’s needing to be smashed and he finally found the potato smasher. Taking the potato’s off the stove he put them in a bowl and began to mash them. “You want them still kind of chunky or smooth madam?”

Sorazo Dar, CNS

Kylie blinked taken aback just a little a bit. Though after a moment she said, “Smooth would be better. With a bit of butter and garlic.” She said as she worked to continue to break up the ground beef. She had heard his first question, though she seemed to be mulling over her answer, careful and cautious of her answer. “Yes, we each have our unique traits, and mannerisms… that is what gives us our individuality. I guess I was use to being left alone for the most part. On the Diaportha, people didn’t seek me out and I wasn’t one to really seek anyone else out either. I had my father and that was all I needed.” She explained softly, turning the ground beef. After the beef mostly browned she went over and grabbed the bowl of vegetables, making sure it was empty of water. Taking the bowl back over to the pan she poured the contents of the bowl into the pan, and grabbed some thyme, rosemary, and some cumin. Liberally she sprinkled them over the meat and vegetable mixture. She mixed them into the mixture, and continued to work it for a few minutes. “I’m not a very social person. Maybe it’s my nature, maybe it’s how I was nurtured. My father was a great man, but he too was only just one man. The others that were on the ship more or less left me alone.” She said her voice taking a somber tone. After another few minutes she searched around the kitchen and pulled out a glass baking dish before she sat it on the counter.
Cadet Kylie Brecker (Engineer)

“You got it.” Responding to the potato question. Mashing it up more to make it smooth he put in some garlic and butter and stirred it until it was mixed. “Done!” Smiling he handed the bowl over but not in her way. Washing up some of the equipment and utensils they used he began again. “That told me more about you and why you prefer isolation over people.” He was talking but not looking at her as he was washing. “But it raise another question. Why did the others leave you alone and not seek you out? No other boys sought you out, especially when you got older?” He then regretted saying it. “Forgive me. That was personal…” Turning to look at her… “Look Miss Brecker. I will tell you point blank right now. You do you and who cares what others say. They make a party mandatory but that doesn’t mean you have to stay. No one. and I mean NO ONE. Can make you stay at a function. Not even the Captain or an Admiral. That is a abuse of their power and do not be afraid to call them out on it. Briefings are a different matter, but parties, get togethers and the like. No. Ok?” He finished up the wash so far. “So what do you plan to do after your enlistment is up? Do you plan to stay longer than the 4 or 6 year commitment?”

Sorazo Dar, CNS

Kylie nodded and then smiled as she grabbed the pan and drained off some of the oil that had accumulated from the hamburger as it cooked. She made sure that she had drained off as much of it as possible, leaving only a little behind, so that she didn’t lose any of the cooked hamburger vegetable mixture. As she worked she thought about the questions he had asked. Slowly she grabbed a spatula and gently poured the contents from the pan to the baking dish. After she had gotten all of the contents transferred she took a breath and let part of it out in a small sigh. “I don’t know why they never did. I do not think that I am someone that could be called attractive.. back then nor now.” She paused a moment as she leaned over just a little bit and grabbed the bowl of mashed potatoes. She reached over to with her freehand to a rack on which hung a few spatulas, ladles, spoons, and the like. She grabbed a spoon before she dipped it into the potatoes then began to cover the meat and vegetables in the garlic butter mashed potatoes. “I am not them… I can not say definitively. No it’s alright. I don’t mind answering personal questions.” She smiled at him then her gaze turned downcast, a slightly melancholic look crossed her face, her eyes misted lightly. She stared her gaze downcast not paying attention for a moment. When he emphasized no one a little loudly, it seemed to shake her out of her reprieve, and she jumps just a little startled. The spoon in her hand tumbled out of her fingers from her surprised state and clattered into the mostly empty bowl. She gave a small nod and grabbed the spoon again, taking it she began to smooth out the potato topping. “Yes sir..” She said softly shaking her head a little. “I wouldn’t be able to call them out on it… it may end badly for me there.” She stated a bit stronger, almost able to gain her old tone. I don’t know, that depends. I thought I may stay in starfleet for a while. I even considered trying and taking time to get recommended for, and work towards being accepted into the command program.” She said rather honestly. “For now I’m waiting on seeing what will come.” She gave him a smile before she took the baking dish and put it into the oven.
Cadet Kylie Brecker (Engineer)

Seeing and hearing the spoon fall from her hand after a question he frowned at himself. “I am very sorry Miss Brecker. I did not mean to cause you distress. I just want ed you to know that you don’t have to be afraid of what others think about you. They are strangers and most of the time, you will never see them again or if you do, the interaction would be minimal. If you are on a job and they are there, be professional. You are a beautiful person inside and out and when you do want to apply for anything in the future like command, a Department Head position or like, feel free to put my name down as a reference. I would be more than happy and honored to give you a great review because you’ve earned it.” Noticing that she was done with everything and the pie was in the oven. “So. While we wait, what do you want to do? I would also like to mention that that shepherds pie does smell good already.”

Sorazo Dar, CNS

She gave him a smile and shook her head. “There is nothing to apologize for frankly one can not avoid saying something that would eventually displease someone. It is impossible to please everyone at all times. But also sometimes hard things have to be said, we have to take the hard road to grow as people. I know that. I appreciate your thoughts on the matter. I also appreciate that. I am astonished you would feel so strongly at our first meeting. However, I will happily do so never the less.” She gives him another wider more joyful smile. “I will see what comes my way, though that does not mean I am not going to try and better myself for the good of myself, my crew, and for starfleet. Thank you sir.” She gives a good natured laugh and set a timer for 10 minutes, before she moved to take a seat. “It does indeed. Luckily it won’t take long to cook, just to get a golden cover on the top layer of potato. I usually like to also top it with a bit of cheese, but I figured this will be just as good.” She looks thoughtful and smiles her fingers on her right hand seem to gently caress the inside of her left wrist thoughtfully.
Kylie Brecker, Ensign (Engineer)

Smiling thoughtfully. “I am glad to hear that. We do what we can do and sometimes we do what we have to do. You will do well and go far Miss Brecker. How are you doing right now in this very moment?” He decided to ask as he saw her caressing her left wrist. He hoped to not see a scar on it.

Sorazo Sar, CNS

As he looked, her sleeve shifted and he could see that there was a somewhat thin black curved line, below it was some grayed skin. It didnt look like a scar, but rather maybe ink? She blinks and smiles. “I miss my dad a bit but other than that I’m okay. Thank you for asking. I appreciate the vote of confidence. I’ve been enjoying my duties onboard the ship. I’m a bit of a work-a-holic.” She gave a chuckle and leaned back a little in her chair, slouching some as she got comfortable waiting on the timer to go off.
Kylie Brecker, Ensign (Engineer)

“You are welcome. It is good to see you smile and relax. I do not see that often, especially on the people that I should. Missing a love one is not something that goes away nor gets easier with time. Just when you think you have a handle on your emotions or you think that you cried out every last tear, something will come along to remind you of them. An anniversary, birthday, holiday, a certain class of ship, a particular smell or food dish, maybe a song. The list is endless and varied. But is OK to miss them child. You wouldn’t have a heart if you didn’t. Your dad sounds like a great man if he left that much of an impression on you. Focus on that sometimes. But I have two ears just for you if you ever want to just talk or vent. Know this.” Takes a whiff of the air. “Hmmm. Smells good.”
