Having completed his check-ins with the captain and sickbay, Demil navigated the halls of the Challenger to the Counselor’s office. He’d been long overdue for a checkup anyways back on the Ark Angel, and given it was fleet policy to get a checkup upon a transfer anyways, it was perfect timing to do it now. He rang the door chime and requested “Excuse me? If you have a free time slot, I’d like to complete my checkup? I’m Ens-Lieutenant Demil Lis.” He sighed as he caught his error, still getting used to having two pips on his collar. He had gotten two promotions in a short period of time, and being a Lt. was still new to him, as was being fully in charge of a department. Demil half-smiled ruefully. He was going to have plenty to discuss.Lt. Demil Lis
CSOSorazo was painting a hillside mural in fall colors with a bay in the background on his wall when he heard the Lt. Sitting down the paint and wiping off his hands he motioned for him to come in and shook his hand. “Welcome! Sure! I always have time. Just let me get right before we begin.” His shirt was off and he was in a white undershirt. Pointing to the far wall where a wooden coffee table was and two plush chairs, was the replicator. “Please help yourself to any refreshments and have a seat in any of the chairs.” He said while putting on his shirt and tucking it in. On the coffee table was a tray of pastries, finger sandwiches and blueberry scones. They smelled freshly baked.
Demil took a small pastry and sat in the chair, silently watching the counselor bustle about.Walking over and getting a glass of water from the replicator and quickly downing it before recycling it and ordering a coffee with sweet cream and walking over to the other open chair and took a seat. “So what is up? The Trill said before he took a sip of his coffee. “Aahh. And do not worry Lieutenant. Getting promoted is a wonderful thing and almost everyone of us has done and will do again, what you just did when you came in.” He winked.

Demil smiled, a bit embarrassed. “It’s definitely an odd feeling, being suddenly in charge of every science officer on this ship.” He swung one leg over the other. “At least it’s smaller than the Ark Angel.”Lieutenant Demil Lis
CSODar nodded. “Yes it is smaller than the Ark Angel. That is one behemoth of a ship. But this ship is no less as important. Do you feel that all of this is too soon and you’re not prepared for it?”
Sorazo Dar, CNS
“I must be prepared, or I wouldn’t have been transferred here,” Demil said, convincing himself as much as answering. “But it is a lot. I hope I live up to the expectations and don’t let anyone down.”Lieutenant Demil Lis
CSODar nodded his head. “Mmm. I see. Just because you were transferred here does not mean that you were prepared. We are in Starfleet and we get orders to go places or to positions that we do not want. Just because some desk jockey looking at a paper version of you and not the real you tells you to come here and slaps on a new shinny pip for compensation, doesn’t mean you are ready. And you do not owe anyone here or anywhere a favor. You are you. A good man from the looks of it so far. A smart man and wise man. For you are here and asking and not just trying to make it out there in the ship and struggle. I applaud you for that. If you are not fully ready, either mentally or technical, then we can arrange for you to take some extra courses and or to have a scheduled sit down with myself. You will not loose your rank or your position. So let me ask you again. Are you ready?” Sorazo looked at the calmly, like a father would advising his son on something important.

Demil sighed. “I know, at least on paper, I’m ready. I’m certainly well-enough educated for it, and I’ve spent the majority of my free time the past few weeks going over the course materials for the graduate Command class for department heads. I just don’t know if I’ll shape out how a department head should once I’m actually doing it.” He thought for a moment. “I think checking in once every so often probably is a good idea, at least while I try to find my feet.”
Lieutenant Demil Lis
CSO
“You are more than welcome to come as often as you would like. You will find no judgement here my good man. However. I believe that you will find a huge source of judgment here.” And he pointed to the Lieutenants head. “You say that you may never shape up to what a department head should be. I am curious, how to you know that? Where does it state that you have to be a certain height, weight, education level, hair black and luxurious, how to act and what to say? Hmm. There aren’t any my good lad. No one knows what a department head does until they become one. Sure there is a course but that is broad in Sprectrum and it most certainly will not cover everything. The people or beings that you think are really good at it have failed many times. That is a fact. It is because of their failures and experiences and the experiences of others that they seems to know what to do and how to do it. Do not beat yourself up. You will make a fine department head. You already have one thing going for you. And that is you are not coming into it thinking you know everything or are some insert higher authority here, gift to department heading. You recognize your faults and are willing to fix them and even talk about them. For that I commend you. Besides we can go to the holodeck with your PaDD from the DH course and input the scenarios into the program and run them until you get an idea of how to handle certain situations, Science wise. Then, when you are ready, I can program it to give you peer to peer exercises, training in leadership and counseling and the like. How does that sound? Remember, you are neve alone on this ship or any ship. Your peers will help you.” He smiled gently. “Now that you listened to an old man ramble off, just sit there and have some refreshments and drink. Ponder about what I said and when you are ready, we will start again.”
