Idos tugged at the collar of his newly assigned cadet uniform while making his way through the corridor. He wasn’t used to wearing such restrictive clothing. During his medical training on Bajor, his class and instructors wore a more loose-fitting robe as to not hinder mobility, not to mention that it made life just a bit easier in comfortable clothing during the hefty schedule that was expected.

The discomfort of the uniform wasn’t news to him, it was just his first time experiencing it personally.

An agreement was made a number of years ago that a small group of civilian medical students, selected by hand by the Bajoran Health Ministry, were given the opportunity to train aboard the Starfleet Starbase 133. Being a hub, the extra traffic coming and going from the base had begun to stretch the station medical staff a bit too far. Being able to offload less severe medical issues to medical students in return for training aboard a highly advanced installation made for a mutually beneficial agreement.

Idos was one of the lucky few to be selected for the prestigious program; receiving benefits he couldn’t have imagined. Being able to watch from the gallery, surgeries and procedures that he’d only read about, interaction with species that he’d never encountered on Bajor, and so many more, turned out to be tremendously informative.

During his two years on Starbase 133, Idos overheard many conversations about newly commissioned officers and cadets alike lamenting over their uniforms. Idos never gave it much thought until the moment he’d finished putting on his own. The stiff uniform did have one redeeming quality. It kept his back straight. Posture was quite a bit more important than most people gave it credit for.

Following the mental map that he’d made during his voyage to the Challenger, Idos finally found himself at the doors to the main sickbay.

Standing before the doors for just a few seconds, he silently sent a prayer to the Prophets for strength and stepped inside. Upon entering, various nurses and patients were about. Idos made sure to step away from the doors as to not block the entrance in case anyone needing sickbay’s services came in.

He waited a few moments before flagging down a passing nurse and asked where he could find his new supervisor, Doctor Rahm. He was directed to an office toward the back of sickbay and he made his way over, hesitating for just a second longer before pushing the button for the chime.

Kaano Idos - Cadet Doctor

Dr. Rahm Vesta sat behind her desk in the CMO’s Office, a small stack of papers neatly stacked on the right side of where she typed on a PADD, working on a book chapter about the trauma of Bajoran miners during the Cardassian Occupation–a task she didn’t know why she’d agreed to partake upon while at the same time beginning her new role on the Challenger.

To remind her of home, she’d decorated her working side of the office with Bajoran rubberwood panels and bolts of fabric. In an attached medical suite, she had kept a biobed and sink for personal exams, as not to expose new cadets to what was happening in the Sickbay itself.

Today, she wore a voluminous blue robe that covered her false leg well, in a color closely matching Fleet medical/science blues. It matched the silver d’ja pagh with blue gems dangling from her her right ear.

Suddenly–a chime at the door.

“Come in,” Vesta called, standing, smoothing her robes. She’d recieved word that a new cadet was incoming, but had yet to learn more about them, and looked forward to speaking with them.

Idos stepped inside a couple of steps to allow the door to close behind him. His first sight was the Bajoran woman with her head down, working at her desk.

Just before he was about to announce himself, he inhaled and his attention was stolen away by the distinctive smell that he hadn’t experienced in over two years. He glanced around the room, seeing the wooden paneling and he couldn’t help but smile. Rubberwood. He would know that smell anywhere. He took a longer look at the various items from his homeworld adorning the walls, that filled him with equal parts happiness and dejection.

Shaking himself out of his conflicting memories, he remembered why he was here. He stood up as straight as he could, doing his best approximation of standing at attention that he’d seen the officers on the Starbase take when addressing a superior.

“Cadet Kaano Idos reporting for duty, sir.” He paused for a moment, thinking. “Or doctor. I beg your pardon, I’m not well versed on the protocol for this situation.”

He seems nervous, still, Vesta thought.

“At ease, Cadet Kaano,” Dr. Rahm Vesta said from her positionbehind the desk. She gestured to the replicator on the far wall.

“I believe I’m going to have a glass of water while I’m up. Would you like something?” she said, shuffling to the replicator panel.

“How lovely it is to another Bajoran onboard,” Dr. Rahm continued. “I decorated this space to remind me of my home and it helps somewhat.

“Thank you, no,” he responded to her offer of a beverage.

Once again, he took the opportunity to look around the office. “You’ve done an excellent job, if you don’t mind me saying so. From the moment I came in, I was instantly reminded of my uncle’s clinic back home. If you put in a fireplace and had some tea brewing, I doubt I could tell the difference.”

-Cadet Doctor Kaano Idos

“Thank you for that,” Dr. Rahm said. “If I’m going to be staying somewhere for a prolonged period of time, I try and get it as much like home as I can. You’d be surprised at what a few wood panels and a bolt of cloth can do, Cadet.”

She hobbled back to her seat behind the desk. “Sit down for a spell and tell me a little about yourself. Ask me anything. After all, this is your intake appointment and I want to give you all the information I can and get to know you as you begin your time with us aboard Challenger .”

“Thank you,” he said as he sat in a chair sitting on the opposite side of Dr. Vesta’s desk. He sat with his back perfectly straight and folded his hands onto his lap.

“Well,” he paused trying to collect his thoughts. “I’m not quite sure what to tell you that isn’t in my file. I come from a family with a long history of being healers and doctors. My father is a healer in our home village, my mother and three sisters are all doctors. Metna, my oldest sister, serves as Chief Medical Officer on the Beaumont. My grandmother told me that they had records of our family dating back about fifteen generations telling about various medical accomplishments they’d made, or where they lived and worked. Those records were lost during the Occupation, but the stories about the family are told all our lives. It’s what we grow up hearing and doing.”

“Medicine had always existed in a strange place between castes on Bajor.” Dr. Rahm nodded sympathetically. “I also hope you end up finding out more information about your ancestors. I do firmly believe that a lot of our information was secreted away–hidden from the Cardassians. Go on. I’m sorry.”

Idos struggled to keep his hands in his lap and to no fidget.

“After my primary schooling was done I took a short break to consider my options but eventually joined the family business. I did my undergraduate degree at Musilla, and then to the Bajoran Medical Academy. My doctorate was completed studying abroad on Starbase 113. While I was on the Starbase, I was headhunted I believe is the human term. Most of my fellow students were asked many times to join Starfleet while training, and I always turned them down. But, after talking with my family, especially my sister, I decided to accept their offer. And here I am.”

“Well, the Challenger is very lucky to have you, Cadet Kaano. Perhaps the Prophets have brought us both here at the same time.” Dr. Rahm said, sipping water from her glass.

He sat silently for a moment, trying to think of something to ask his superior, unable to come up with anything else to say about himself.

“As for questions, I guess an obvious first one would be about the work that is done here. The kind of missions we usually undertake. As I understand, the Challenger is quite advanced as Starfleet ships go, but I can’t imagine that a training ship for the academy is sent into too many dangerous situations.”

-Cadet Doctor Kaano Idos

“Dangerous? Space itself is danger and void, Cadet,” Dr. Rahm said. “But the goal of the Challenger is to give you a taste of what is to come in the main fleet. Starfleet does give us tasks and missions, most of which the Captain educates us on when the time comes. I’m more focused on your skill as a physician and watching you grow into a fine Ensign. Does that help?”
