“Gosh,” Pilar thought to herself, “I almost feel like I don’t belong here. It’s been so long since I was last on a starship” She shook her head and put her left hand on her forehead as she walked toward sickbay. Her confidence was not at its highest and she felt ashamed of it because she knew she needed to display high-quality confidence for her new role; especially as a psychological evaluator who was going to be advising the crew on their mental health and the motivator to the new cadets who were just starting their Star-Fleet careers. Even though, Pilar had a good reason for feeling like she did. The journey to the Challenger had not been a good one because she had gotten motion sickness, thrown up, and then briefly passed out after she left the atmosphere of New Vulcan in the shuttle. All of this was after being on a three-year maternal leave of absence after finding out she was pregnant with her third child. Pilar experienced complications during the entire gestation and after delivering a healthy daughter, she had a hard time recovering due to the blood incapability disorder she had with the previous two pregnancies. This time the blood incompatibility disorder was worse because it caused a little damage to some of her organs which was nearly fatal. She thought she would not ever be able to return to duty, but here she was, and in the words of her husband she, “… had to pull herself together to be an exceptional counselor and show Captain Rhodes that he had made the best choice to fill the role.”
“Yes, sir.” She whispered to herself then smiled as she walked into sickbay for her medical evaluation.

Halcyone, Counselor

P’Mala Dawes sat behind the intake desk, glancing at her PADD. Besides the one case of Bolian flu earlier in the week, and one bruised knee, sickbay had been relatively slow and all the recent patient files were filled out. She’d spent the day before doing inventory and playing spades with NE Nurse Liu and NE Xvok and won two games and lost two games–the others were a little surprised the half-Vulcan doctor could hold her own at an Earth card game, but they’d played it in her old ER in Kentucky as well.

A woman with curly hair and greenish blue eyes entered the room.

“Welcome to Sick Bay. Can I help you?” P’Mala asked, standing from her seat.

-Cadet P’Mala Dawes

Pilar glanced around sickbay; she had been expecting the CMO to complete her exam but the only person in sickbay was a very tall Vulcan, not all Vulcan, maybe half Vulcan woman. She smiled at the woman and said, “You are not who I was expecting but I am sure you are just as capable.”

“The CMO could appear any moment, and I’ll defer to her,” P’Mala said, attempting her best approachable smiling. “I do have a few years on the average Cadet–I was an ER doctor for a few years before I decided to join Starfleet. My main focus was diverse anatomies, and I’m not afraid to ask for multiple perspectives, so you’re in good hands with me.”

P’Mala pointed Pilar toward the exam rooms

She walked to a biobed and stood by it. “I am here for my medical evaluation. Usually, these are routine for me but… well let’s just say I had some complications from giving birth to my last child. Organ failure. I was on Vulcan with my husband during this time. The physicians there treated me with regeneration therapy and have assured me that tissue regeneration was successful on the organs that were damaged during my pregnancy.” She tapped the biobed with her fingers and then said, “However I was told to come here as soon as reached the ship for an examination so my doctor, on Vulcan, can continue to monitor my progress remotely. Apparently, I am the first Risian/Argelian who has had the procedure on the planet, and I think I have become their guinea pig.”

Halcyone, Counselor

P’Mala nodded. “Many of the doctors on Vulcan have terrible bedside manner–I promise to treat you like a person, not an experiment.”

She put on a pair of operating gloves. “Do you have any allergies?” she asked, grabbing her PADD. “Oh, and please hop on the bed so we can get your vitals.”

OOC: If you could RP your vitals, I can go from there! :p

-Cadet P’Mala Dawes

Pilar did as the doctor asked, “The bedside manner is not my concern. I am accustomed to their manners. My husband is Vulcan and that is my home, where I go when I take leave.”

“No offense meant, of course,” P’Mala said. “Some patients can find Vulcan doctors a little… blunt. You understand.”

As she scooted back on the biobed she continued, “I know Vulcans are not accustomed to lying, but I wonder if they are just not telling me something is wrong. You see it’s been nearly three years since I have had regeneration therapy so either they are carefully studying my case or there is an anomaly they are trying to monitor. Or both.”

The counselor’s vitals were perfect. Every organ in her body was functioning perfectly and there was no sign of an anomaly.

“Allergies, No, not really. However, apparently, I am allergic to Vulcans.” She looked at P’Mala and said, “No offense. What I mean is that every time I get pregnant I have a blood incapability issue because my blood is not compatible with my half Vulcan baby’s blood. I have to have special treatment for it. Stop my body from overworking all its organs and attacking my child. Essentially my body is allergic to my own baby.”

Halcyone, Counselor

P’Mala entered some information into the PADD, making sure she took note of all the new counselor was telling her, as per the book.

“I sympathize,” P’Mala said. “An old ob-gyn used to say, ‘They’re more fun when they get older.’”

Pilar laughed, it was true. She wondered what her children were doing right now. Spenser was so much like his father. Serious, logical and very much into his studies at the Vulcan Science Academy. Perseus a little more free-spirited, but living on the planet with her grandparents, she still made an attempt to conform the the Vulcan ways. Finally her baby, T’shyri, she was just too young. There was no way to know how she would turn out.

“Well, your vitals look great.” P’Mala said, checking her PADD. “From the preliminary scanning done here, I can see no active anomalies.”

Pilar sighed in relief

She adjusted her glasses. “That reminds me, you mentioned special treatments and regeneration therapy–both services we can provide, if need be. Do you take any medications or treatments that we could procure for you? We carry tesokine for crewman who may need it, for example.”

-Dawes

“Thank you doctor..I’ll let you know. I am just glad that everything checks out for now.” She hopped off the biobed, smiling ready to get to work. “Oh do you mind forwarding my evaluation to Dr Sechel on Vulcan? He will be expecting it. His contact info should be in my profile.”

Halcyone, Counselor

P’Mala tapped at her PADD briskly and signed her name with a flourish.

“The eval’s been sent.” She smiled. “By all means, I deem you fit to serve. Welcome aboard the Challenger, Counselor. If there’s anything I can do for you as a medical provider, or if you have an appetite for the occasional homemade Vulcan food, I make a mean plomeek soup and I’m usually around Medical. I’ll also let CMO Frankenstein know you were here–I’m sure she’d rather have conducted your intake–but it was nice to meet you!”

-Cadet P’Mala Dawes

“Oh, you make plomeek soup? I am going to have to take you up on that offer.”

“I actually grow the plomeek in the botanical bay. I had to register the plant as part of an experiment: Vulcan Sustinance Project P-099.” She rolled her eyes.

She grinned at the doctor. “I must admit I was hoping Frankenstein was going to be doing my evaluation but I am glad it was you. You are a nice reminder of home and my family. I will be sure to let Frankenstein know I am pleased with the way you conducted my evaluation.”
She placed her hands on her shoulder and said, “Please stop by my office when you are off duty and find the time. I would love to chat with you more.”

Halcyone, Counselor

“Absolutely! It was a pleasure to meet you, and I will take you up on that. It’ll be nice to catch up on what’s been going on in Vulcan, hopefully soon.”
