“Gosh,” Pilar thought to herself, “I almost feel like I don’t belong here. It’s been so long since I was last on a starship” She shook her head and put her left hand on her forehead as she walked toward sickbay. Her confidence was not at its highest and she felt ashamed of it because she knew she needed to display high-quality confidence for her new role; especially as a psychological evaluator who was going to be advising the crew on their mental health and the motivator to the new cadets who were just starting their Star-Fleet careers. Even though, Pilar had a good reason for feeling like she did. The journey to the Challenger had not been a good one because she had gotten motion sickness, thrown up, and then briefly passed out after she left the atmosphere of New Vulcan in the shuttle. All of this was after being on a three-year maternal leave of absence after finding out she was pregnant with her third child. Pilar experienced complications during the entire gestation and after delivering a healthy daughter, she had a hard time recovering due to the blood incapability disorder she had with the previous two pregnancies. This time the blood incompatibility disorder was worse because it caused a little damage to some of her organs which was nearly fatal. She thought she would not ever be able to return to duty, but here she was, and in the words of her husband she, “… had to pull herself together to be an exceptional counselor and show Captain Rhodes that he had made the best choice to fill the role.”
“Yes, sir.” She whispered to herself then smiled as she walked into sickbay for her medical evaluation.

Halcyone, Counselor

P’Mala Dawes sat behind the intake desk, glancing at her PADD. Besides the one case of Bolian flu earlier in the week, and one bruised knee, sickbay had been relatively slow and all the recent patient files were filled out. She’d spent the day before doing inventory and playing spades with NE Nurse Liu and NE Xvok and won two games and lost two games–the others were a little surprised the half-Vulcan doctor could hold her own at an Earth card game, but they’d played it in her old ER in Kentucky as well.

A woman with curly hair and greenish blue eyes entered the room.

“Welcome to Sick Bay. Can I help you?” P’Mala asked, standing from her seat.

Pilar glanced around sickbay; she had been expecting the CMO to complete her exam but the only person in sickbay was a very tall Vulcan, not all Vulcan, maybe half Vulcan woman. She smiled at the woman and said, “You are not who I was expecting but I am sure you are just as capable.” She walked to a biobed and stood by it. “I am here for my medical evaluation. Usually, these are routine for me but… well let’s just say I had some complications from giving birth to my last child. Organ failure. I was on Vulcan with my husband during this time. The physicians there treated me with regeneration therapy and have assured me that tissue regeneration was successful on the organs that were damaged during my pregnancy.” She tapped the biobed with her fingers and then said, “However I was told to come here as soon as reached the ship for an examination so my doctor, on Vulcan, can continue to monitor my progress remotely. Apparently, I am the first Risian/Argelian who has had the procedure on the planet, and I think I have become their guinea pig.”
