Surra slowly and quietly walked toward Commander Sinclair’s office. She had tried thinking of ways she could get out of the required visit, but none seemed like plausible excuses. Time was running out, she did not want to be reprimanded for not following procedure, therefore she decided to get it over with. As she reached the door, she let out a huge sigh, then she walked through it.

Lieut. Almikaz (CSO)

Sinclair looked up from behind his desk. He was a large man, broad shouldered and well muscled with a hair cut more indicative of Marines or Security than a Counselor. As she came in, she was greeting with a warm smile. Sinclair stood up, he was extremely tall as well, and he held out his hand. “You must be Lieutenant Almikaz. So nice to meet you.” he said, his Scottish accent giving additional warmth and sincerity to his words. “I’m Lieutenant Commander Sinclair, ship’s counselor. Please have a seat wherever you would like. Would you like something to drink before we begin?”

The office was comfortable, with a desk in one corner and then a seating area opposite. A single chair faced away from the desk towards two other chairs and a long couch surrounding a short table on which sat a small bowl filled with multicolored stones. A low bookcase lined one wall, but sat mostly empty save for a few textbooks and such. The room was not lit as brightly or harshly as the hallway outside, but instead had a warm and welcoming lighting scheme.

He seemed nice but Surra averted her eyes from his as she said, “I am not thirsty, Commander.” She walked over to the table and picked up one of the multicolored stones from the bowl, observed it, then replaced it. She then looked around the room. The lighting was nice and it helped relieve some of her anxiety. She walked over and sat in one of the two chairs, then she looked at the man. “I think you should know that I do not want be here. However I know this is protocol, so please go ahead and evaluate me. So I can get back to work.”

Sinclair smiled and shrugged. “I get that a lot. Don’t worry about it.” and he came around the desk and took a seat facing her. He noticed her anxiety and made a mental note of that and her honesty about it. “It is protocol, yes. Sorry about that. And I do not want to take you away form your duties for long, I assure you.” He leaned back a bit and assessed her body language. She looked directly at him, which showed either a lack of deception or a desire for confrontation. Royal mentally gave her the benefit of the doubt and went with the former.
“Do you mind me asking why you dislike coming here?” he asked, looking at her directly but keeping his voice even and inquisitive, not aggressive.

OOC: I notice a couple of times you wrote about what my character was doing, so I just want to make it clear that you cannot determine what another player’s character is doing. For example you said “she looked at him” I think it’s more appropriate to say, “he noticed (or saw) her looking directly at him”. I also noted this in your previous post when you said “she was greeting with a warm smile”, however I took that to be a typo. I am sure that was not your intention, so with that said, be careful not to take over the actions of another character in the game.

IC: Well Commander, I don’t like talking to strangers about myself, my personal life. Also there are things in the past I’d rather leave in the past. It makes me anxious to have to recall them. Especially the death of my father.” Surra clasped her hands together in her lap tightly and tried with all her strength to remain emotionally strong. It was the real reason she hated being there. She refused to cry in front of strangers.

Sinclair looked at her for a moment, and a soft smile crossed his face. He set the PaDD down on the table and leaned back in his chair. “Lieutenant, I’m not sure what you expect to happen here, right now. But I am only doing a boarding exam to make sure you are fit for duty. You are under no obligation to unpack any past events, or discuss things that make you uncomfortable. For now, all I am trying to ascertain is whether or not you mentally and emotionally fit to perform your duties. This isn’t a full-blown counseling session, and it should be relatively short… unless you feel the need to stretch it out, in which case I allocated time for that just in case. But please, relax won’t you? I promise not to go digging anywhere without your consent. Okay?”

“I am perfectly fine with that. However that has not been my experience, Counselor.” she said now with a smile. She was definitely starting to relax. “You know, I think I will have a drink before we get started.”

Sinclair gave her a nod and a small wink. He stood and went to the replicator. “What can I get for you, Lieutenant?”

“Just water, please.” She shifted a little as she looked around the room. She was looking for pictures or more personal items like art, to get an idea of who she was talking to. Surra did note an accent but she wasn’t quite sure of the origin. She looked at him and said, “So Commander, tell me what I need to do, so I can be officially cleared for duty.”

Sinclair retrieved a water for her a cup of hot tea with lemon for himself. He set the chilled glass in front of her and cup and saucer in front of his seat. Sitting down, he said “It’s a very simple and straightforward process. I am simply going to ask you a few questions, you answer as honestly as you can… just a conversation between us, but I will take some notes for my own sake. Whatever you say, it stays here. And when we finish, I may or may not have some recommendations for you, depending on how things play out. And that’s it. So? Shall we begin?” he asked as he set the PaDD on his knee.
