“Well let’s get you checked in and then see about helping you find your quarters.”

P’Mala nodded, internalizing what Dr. Frankenstein had said. She would be fine. She chalked it up to the teleporter, to all the change, the new environment. She approached Dr. Frankenstein, felt a warmth from her that was quite reassuring, a mutuality of respect.

“I’d like to get my med eval done first,” she said. “Then I have an appointment with the ship’s Counselor. I wouldn’t mind figuring out my quarters and getting some of my belongings from one of the cargo bays.”

P’Mala thought about her boxes and craved a jar of her Appalachian grandmother’s home-canned tomato juice, rich and slightly mineral. She remembered how unusual Kentucky was, compared to Vulcan. Sure, both had mountains–very different ones. But many of the people were so emotionally present.

By now, she’d made a lot of peace between her two sides, and tried to make the best efforts to explain herself to others.

P’Mala’s cheeks twitched, a little wryly. “But of course, as my commanding officer, I defer to you. When I earned my first doctorate in Kentucky–well before I joined the Academy–I was younger and my behavior, at times, could come across as… not as I intended.”

“You came to Starfleet as a doctor already too,” she asked the cadet. “The civilian sector has to be hurting. Cadet McCall was an emergency room doc before he changed his suit and tie for a uniform. “

IC: “That’s interesting!” she said. “I’d spent time in Emergency, too. “

Showing the cadet a biobed, Daphne grabbed a PaDD and brought up the woman’s file. While the information was at her finger tips, Daphne was beyond excited to have two seasoned doctors as cadets. There was a lot the rest of them could learn from P’Mala and McCall. Half of medicine was just experience. “You don’t have to mention this but you have me curious. Why the need to join Starfleet? If you share I will let you have one good joke about my name.” The smile on her face showed Daphne took her surname with a sense of humor.

IC: “I got into medicine through Xenobiology, and aside from the pod of Xindi Aquatics who live in the Kentucky River and a few Romulan and Pakled refugees, there weren’t a lot of extraterrestrial bodies to heal in rural Appalachia.”

She took a thoughtful second. “Okay, here’s my joke,” the half-Vulcan started, “With a name like Frankenstein, I’m sure you’ve seen your fair share of terrestrial body parts.”

P’Mala’s eyes glinted with an inner laughter. She liked this woman.

Daphne let out a laugh and smiled. “With a name like Frankenstein, I have tested my fair share of body parts,” she fired back. “As for the extraterrestrial body parts just never use that and the words I am about to probe you now. Those really bad and super crazy people still exist. You know the ones with the tin foil hats that swear bizarre things like warp doesn’t really exist and the Federation is only a holodeck program. Every once in a while on the civilian side of things you will run into it. Makes me chuckle. Can’t stop crazy. You just have to run with it. That is the stuff that is not on the recruitment posters.”

Running the scan she looked at the results on the screen.
