Aaron adjusted his uniform as he stepped through the doors into the Security Office. One of the many downsides to making the jump over to command, was the expectation that he maintain his weapons certifications. Not that he hadn’t learned how to fire a phaser at the Academy, as did all Cadets, but as a scientist who spent most of the time in the lab, no one really questioned him if his certs weren’t exactly up to date. But now, his name was on the top of the list that Command had sent over as due for recertification.

“What can I help you with today Commander?” the duty ensign said seeing Aaron come through the door.

“Apparently my number has been called, and I’m due for my weapons recertification,” Aaron said as he made his way over to where the Ensign was sitting. “I was hoping that I could get some time on the range to get my recertification complete.”

Cmdr. Foley - XO

Chief Rodier’s office was more or less attached to the Security Office, though not directly. Regardless, he noticed his XO in a place he wasn’t usually seen through his half-open door, and the confusion was enough to set him at a fast walk into the hallway.

“Commander?” he called. “Don’t see you in these parts much, what’s the occasion?” He added a slight, almost cowboy-ish twang to the first part of the sentence.

Aaron slowly turned and looked over at Rodier. “Do I need a reason to drop in? Or are you hiding something in here Lieutenant? And should I comment on how quickly you appeared after I stepped in here,” he said trying to keep his tone as serious as possible.

The passive smile that usually rested on Henry’s face faltered, his mind starting to race. Shoot, I don’t really know Foley, do I? he thought. And then, of course, came the thought, is he framing me?

This all ran through his mind in the space of a half second, followed by a mental shake of his head. “No, sir, you do not. And no, sir, you should not. I do kind of live here,” - he gestured to the adjoining wall - “so it would be shirking my duty not to appear.” A moment of contemplation, and he casually added, “And I obviously can’t let anyone see the bodies unsupervised.”

Aaron laughed, “you know that reminds me of a conversation some of my friends had back at the academy. The best way to get rid of a body on a starship. Purely theoretical of course, but there are a surprising number of ways to make things disappear on a starship.”

With a last laugh he shook his head, “but that’s not why I’m here. HQ just sent through the list of crew members who are needing to up their various certifications this month. Apparently it’s that time of year where I need to do my weapons recertification. I came down in the hopes to get a bit of time on the range to get it completed.”

“I happen to know of a certain rifle that would probably do the job,” he replied. “And I’m not so sure,” he added, putting on a stern look. “We’re quite busy these days.” The range was, in fact, completely deserted. “And don’t think your rank will get you any special reservations. That privilege is reserved for a very specific list, curated by yours truly.”

“Trust me, if I thought rank gave me any special privileges, I would have already taken advantage of them,” Aaron said with a laugh. “I’d be happy with passing on the first time round honestly. I came from a pretty cushy posting back on Earth, where the worst that was going to happen was a Cadet who forgot to turn in their assignment on time.”

Henry’s face morphed into a grin. “Well in that case, sir, have at it.” He walked up to the weapons locker and retrieved a Type II standard-issue phaser, handing it to Foley. “Just let me know when you want the actual test to begin - then I’ll have to pay attention. Otherwise I’ll be over here.” He strolled over to one corner of the room, staring at the Commander. “No pressure,” he added, the grin still underlying his expression.
