Henry stood in front of the doors to Holodeck One. Not the first time, probably won’t be the last, he thought. Indeed, he’d found the Holodeck to be a great training tool in his time on the Challenger. Even if he couldn’t bring himself to do the programming himself, there always seemed to be an engineer willing to do a senior officer a favor. It was, of course, totally unrelated if those engineers were given a Bridge assignment the following night.

Regardless of how the programs came to be, they were there, and, in Henry’s opinion, they were awesome. So it was that he entered the Holodeck and looked around at the now-empty room, preparing for the training exercise to come. Oh! The trainees, he remembered, mentally slapping his forehead. Physically, of course, he slapped his commbadge. =^= Rodier to Cadet Lenwa and NEs Clancy and Trow, report to Holodeck One. =^=

OOC: Hey Allen! Just a couple explanations in case you haven’t seen the nomenclature just yet: this symbol –> =^= and similar things indicate a comm or computer transmission. Also, “NE” refers to a Nameless Ensign - essentially an NPC created to help us out in sims.

Taya found her assigned quarters and got settled in, though she didn’t really need to do much of that. She had one travel bag that contained mostly personal keepsakes and pictures from Betazed and from the academy. Still, it was home for this time in her life and she was already thinking of ways to decorate. She hadn’t met her roommate yet, so she hoped they would agree on how to make their cabin a nicer place to live.

When the call from Lieutenant Rodier came, ordering her to report to holodeck one, she couldn’t get there fast enough. She was so excited, she forgot to acknowledge him. Stepping inside and out of breath, she jumped to attention once again.

“Cadet Lenwa reporting as ordered, sir!”

“I admire the haste, Cadet. Woman after my own heart.” He thought back to his (hopefully) perfectly timed arrival at his old Chief’s office when he’d first arrived on the Challenger. Seemed like ages ago.

Henry gave a very slight shake of his head to clear his mind as the NEs arrived, albeit a full thirty seconds behind Taya. “Now, I want to start off by saying that this is just a simulation. I do take note of training outcomes when it comes time for personnel evaluations, but I care a lot more about situational awareness than I do about you ‘beating the sim,’” here he used air-quotes.

“So,” he finished, slapping his hands together to grab their attention. “Cadet Lenwa has mentioned her desire to serve at the Tactical position. Here, she’ll be at that station in a Discovery-class vessel like this one. ” He looked at the two NEs. “Clancy, you’ll be on helm. Trow, you’ll be secondary tactical. You’ll both take orders from the Cadet.” A sharp inhale escaped him. “Okay. I’ll be watching from an observation room I’ve set up. Anybody got any questions? Now’s the time.”

OOC: Do I write what happens or react to you as GM?

Cadet Taya Lenwa - Security

OOC: This is going to be a sort of mini-sim, so you can control the NEs, give them orders, etc., but I’ll be describing the surroundings, whether what you’re trying to do is successful, and so on. Don’t worry about making mistakes, and just respond in-character to whatever you’re presented with!

~ Gavin

“No, sir. No questions.” Taya was just eager to begin.

“Very well. Computer, start Simulation Alpha Delta Twenty Two, authorization Rodier, Henry.” =^= Authorization accepted. Beginning Simulation Alpha Delta Twenty Two. =^= A ship’s bridge began to materialize around them, nearly identical to that of the Challenger. By the time it had come fully into existence, Henry was nowhere to be found, and Taya, Clancy and Trow were left by themselves on the bridge, debris visible floating past through the viewscreen.

Taya looked at the detritus on the view screen, but she couldn’t tell what it was.

“Trow, scan the debris. I’ll do a sensor sweep of the area. Clancy, hold our position here, but stay alert. Be ready to move, if necessary.”

“Plotting an escape course now,” said Clancy.

Taya felt odd giving orders to ensigns, but this was the training scenario, so she was going to take full advantage of it. She nervously waited for the scan results to appear.

The scan indicated that the debris was a mix of asteroids, many of them broken up and spinning about, and some ship remnants. As the scan continued, a very slight but direct movement of one of the remnants was detected. The movement was toward the Starfleet ship, now identifiable as the USS Lightburn.

Clancy’s efforts were successful; all of the Lightburn’s systems were fully operational and ready to go.

Taya saw something move towards the ship. It could have been nothing, but in a training exercise, that was unlikely.

“Trow, do you see that… whatever it is, move in our direction?” said Taya.

“I did,” said Trow.

“Focus an intense scan on it. I’ll ready phasers, just in case,” said Taya.

The phaser banks came online as Trow ran the scan. The intensity of the scan increased as the object got steadily closer, revealing some very faint impulse drive emissions. Trow was unable to detect any other details, as some sort of distortion was blocking the scan.

As the officers were investigating the first object, another piece of debris started to move in the direction of the Lightburn.

“Clancy, back us away from those objects,” said Taya. “Trow, are there any reports of missing vessels or distress signals in the area?” Taya tapped her console, readying a comm channel.

A scan of local signals would reveal no reported missing vessels or distress signals, but a high-priority message from a nearby system reported a modified Klingon warp signature with a heading matching the Lightburn’s rough location.

As the ship’s thrusters reversed, the approaching objects maintained their current speed, straying a bit further away from the three Starfleet officers’ vessel.

A Klingon ship was coming towards them. Two mysterious items from a debris field were moving in their direction as well. Something was blocking their ability to identify what those objects were. Frustrated, Taya sat at her station, not knowing what else she could do, other than wait.

From his position in the observation room of the holodeck, Henry nodded once, a small smile on his face.

Waiting paid off, though in what way was up for interpretation. About a minute after the threesome began their period of silence, a cry came from Trow. “Contact, twelve o’clock!” As they said this, a large ship vaguely resembling a scaled-up version of the Birds of Prey each of the officers had faced in Academy simulations appeared in front of them. “About fifty-three hundred kilometers out, scans are showing a modified Klingon D5 cruiser!”

~ Lt. jr. gr. Rodier - CoS/Mini GM

Taya studied the Klingon ship, expecting one to arrive. A comm channel was still open.

“Klingon ship, this is Cad… Captain Taya Lenwa of the USS Lightburn.” Taya paused for a split second and smiled at calling herself captain. “How may we assist you today?”

OOC: How does our ship stack up to what we know about Klingon ships?
