After leaving sickbay, Taya headed off to the counselor’s office. Dreading what she knew was coming, her feet felt like they were getting heavier with each step she took. Reaching her destination, she set her travel bag on the floor and quietly sat in a chair, hoping no one would notice her. One could dream.

Cadet Taya Lenwa - Security.

A young Officer, maybe slightly taller than Taya came in shortly after through the same door that she had used, and looked up noting her sitting in the waiting room. “Hi there!” the man said with a cheerful expression. He was thin with short blond hair, and sported a van dyke beard that was of a slightly darker shade than his hair.

“I’m Counselor Klein, I don’t see an appointment on the list so you must be a new Cadet here for your boarding check-in?” The way he spoke made it sound like it wasn’t really a question, which it wasn’t. “Come through and take a seat, Cadet. Lets get you sorted.”

Opening the door to the Counselors Office, he stood back with a smile to let her enter first.

OOC: Hi Allen! Seeing as we are currently short a Ships Counselor, I’ll be filling in with an NE (Nameless Ensign, or temporary character) for you. Nice to meet you on the ship! I’m looking forward to getting to know your character.

While traveling to the Challenger, Taya had learned who the senior staff was, but the man that joined her in the waiting room, wasn’t on that list. No matter. If it was a junior member of the staff, a counselor was a counselor and an evaluation was, well, annoying.

“Yes, I’m new here,” said Taya. She got up and went to the office, thanking Klein with a smile for being a gentleman and letting her in first. Taking a seat, her hands resting in her lap, she just wanted to get the eval over.

Klein followed her in and walked around the desk, indicating a replicator on the wall to the side of it.

Stopping beside the replicator, he threw her a short grin. It wasn’t unusual to see a variety of reactions from people to these sessions even though it was just an informal meet and greet. Some treated it like they had to hide everything for fear of their soul being exposed, some, exposed their soul. Others just treated it like a multi-choice questionnaire and answered all of the above to everything. “Coffee, Flat White with two sugars,” he ordered and moments later, one was in his hands as he turned to the Cadet. “First day check-ins can be taxing, at least you get to sit and have a pleasant chat now right? Thirsty?”

Pleasant chat? Taya didn’t think so. “No thanks.” Taya just wanted to get this done so she could find her quarters and get settled.

“Fair enough,” he said and moved to the counselors chair and sat himself down. Opening her file on the PaDD in front of him, he looked it over for a moment as he sipped his coffee in silence.

“Try to relax,” Klein said and looked up at her finally, pushing the PaDD to one side. “This is just a boarding evaluation. You’ve done all the hard work already and I’m not going to try and pry anything new out of you. I’m sure you are sick and tired of constantly being monitored at the Academy as part of the process. But you made it, this is a Starship. Is there anything you need from us to help settle in?”

Taya sighed audibly, something she immediately regretted. Expecting another session, it was a surprise to see that wasn’t happening. Of course, the counselor could be setting her up by making her feel comfortable, then hitting her with the things she’d already said hundreds of times.

Was she being too cynical?

Taya shrugged. “I’m really just ready to find my quarters and start my duties. It was indeed a long process and I’m ready to serve.”

“Well then, in that case,” Klein picked up the PaDD and ticked over the notes. “Cadet Taya Lenwa, Security. “No concerns on boarding and no issues to follow up from the Academy, ready and able to begin duties once cleared by Medical, her Department Head and Counseling.” He visibly ticked several boxes, then wrote something in the PaDD for a minute or so before looking back at her.

“Okay, we are done, welcome to the Challenger, Cadet.” Klein smiled and stood, moving towards the door.

Seconds passed as Taya processed what just happened. It couldn’t be that easy. There had to be more.

“If you don’t mind, I’d like to know what you wrote about me,” said Taya.

“You are absolutely within your right to know, it is about you after all,” Klein said, opening the door and then moving to stand beside it, still clearly indicating the Check-in was over if she wanted it to be. He raised the PaDD in front of him to read.

“Cadet Taya Lenwa presented for her Counseling check-in with no ongoing Counseling issues indicated from the Academy. During her boarding check-in she avoided engaging in casual social conversation, declined refreshments and indicated a desire to leave to find her quarters and prepare to begin her duties. As this is not a Counseling session, and no prior concerns are of note that require addressing, the Cadets wishes were granted and the check-in signed off by myself. I consider Cadet Lenwa capable and able to begin her duties and her apparent behavior of socially distancing herself is not currently a concern, but may be evaluated on her next counseling session.“

Klein lowered the PaDD and raised an eyebrow slightly. “You are Betazoid, I am surprised you couldn’t pick up on that from me as I was writing it.”
