Stacks of grey crates rose on either side of the main section of the cargo bay, various colours tagging the departments to whom they belong. Itemized, cross-checked and catalogued, every crate had a place in the bay and in the ship’s computer.
This day, like many others, involved moving crates, cataloguing the new arrivals and ensuring flagged supplies were delivered to the right department. It was an often mindless task, but for Ensign Albert Morton it was beautiful. He brought a sense of order to the chaos of a multitude of delivery shipments and thus he made a great Operations officer. Working under the engineering department he was a resource allocator. Not THE resource allocator, but a stalwart of department. Maybe it was because he had little in the way of ambition that he hadn’t yet been promoted, but he was happy biding his time. And while he did that, he could have a little fun.
The cadets were an interesting bunch and he had to say that he really enjoyed working on an Academy ship. It certainly wasn’t boring! So as the cadets did the grunt work of checking in with him while they came and went to gather supply requisitions, he had taken to playing games to keep the whole process from being monotonous. And so, five hours into his shift and overdue for his break, he was trying hard to keep the energy up before he took a break.
“Okay, who is next? If you don’t know why you’re here, hand me the PADD your department head or whomever gave you and we’ll sort out your cargo,” Morton said, peering down at his master supply list and back up to the cadets and other junior officers doing their various versions of scut work.

Still smiling, Cadet Baptiste responded, “Well that is what Cadet Dawes and myself are here for, to take care of you Security folks when you put yourselves on the line protecting the crews and our butts.”

“Hopefully, it never comes to that,” said Taya.

“You’re preaching to the choir. Unfortunately, we are Star Fleet and that means we are on the vanguard of the Federation in exploration and in the defense of the Federation. Which means we are the first to encounter the dangers associated with such activities. Just know I am grateful we have such a highly trained group in Security and Tactical to protect us from the dangers. Also know I will do my best to fix you up when those dangers get the best of you.” Cadet Baptiste stated, smiling.

P’Mala listened to the other cadets thoughtfully.
“To be honest,” she said, “I’d rather be in sickbay doing what I know. Hopefully this line starts going somewhere soon!”
She stretched one leg–it made a little cracking noise. “It feels like we’ve been standing here for a while, and I don’t think there’s been much movement .”
- Cadet P’Mala Dawes
“Well of course, as the old saying goes in any organization: ‘Hurry up and wait’ ; I think it really applies to the folks in Resource Allocations. In fact I think they take pride in the motto ‘Hurry Up and Wait’” replied Cadet Baptiste.

OOC: I’m back! I love that you all kept things going, but we’ll do a quick primer on snipping threads. Be kind, save people from scrolling a lot but remove all but the last 2-3 posts (plus the ‘Posted by’ lines) in a 2-person thread or the last relevant post (something that gives context or needs replying to) for each person in a group thread. That might mean group threads run longer and that’s okay. And when your poor GM is out sick and you are having fun, fantastic, just snip to leave my last post so I can reply more easily into the narrative you’re weaving. You’ll see I’ve done that here, rather than cutting the threads to the top as we might normally.Hope that makes sense.
IC:
The line was indeed moving slowly, but given that there was not tons for anyone to do (unless you were doing ship repairs), everyone was in something of a holding pattern. Morton also looked bored but then suddenly grinned at the group. “I’m bored, are you bored? I’ve been at this a few hours, so what do you say we make the waiting more fun? How about we play a game while we sort out supplies? Anyone heard of truth or dare?”~Mischief Maker
Cadet Baptiste, with a slight smile and a small chuckle replied “Of course sir, it is an old earth game, but I am unsure a Vulcan may have ever played it, or for that matter a Betazoid, no offense ladies. Their cultures and upbringings are far more ‘advanced’ than our Terran upbringings.”
