Chief Dawson took a moment to look around as he stepped off the shuttle in to the landing bay, taking the chance to get a look at the various groups of deck hands and cadets performing repair and maintenance before they realised the new Chief Engineer was amongst them.

The ship seemed to have taken even more of a pounding lately than could be accounted for due to having been left in the not so tender hands of a bunch of book smart cadets. One of the shuttles looked to have more broken parts than whole, and some careless pilot had left a huge ding in the flight deck that would need at least 3 panels replacing and a full respray before it would pass any sort of inspection.

“Cadets.” Muttered Kell gruffly, shaking his head as he stalked off to the turbolift, heading to the Captain’s ready room to report in whilst making a mental note to check the flight logs and see exactly which ‘nugget’ was going to be spending the rest of the cruise hand polishing the flight deck to Kell’s satisfaction.

Stepping out of his the lift, Kell slung his heavy kit bag back over his shoulder, easily handling the weight without straining. With a brief glance about the bridge and a nod to the officer in the center chair, he strode purposely across to the ready room door and hit the chime.

The door to the Captains Ready Room slid open almost immediately, revealing a large wooden desk with a large and comfortable leather chair behind it but no Captain sitting at the chair. Scattered across the desk were PaDD’s and reports of various kinds, a plate of biscuits, an old wooden smoking pipe and an oversized mug that looked well used.

“Come in,” the voice came from the immediate right of the door, and looking around one would see a two seater sofa with a man in the red of Command sitting on one end of the sofa, legs stretched out and feet propped on the arm of the opposite end of it. He was reading a very old looking book, the cover of which read something about Sun Tzu and War, but his fingers were covering most of it.

“How can I help you, Lieutenant?” Grayson asked, not moving but tilting the book towards him so he could see over the top of it.

Kell let the kit bag fall to the deck with an audible thump. Clearly it’s contents were much heavier than a few spare uniforms and a couple of PaDD’s.

“Lieutenant Dawson, reporting aboard, Sir.” Kell stood rigidly at attention and ripped off the sort of text book salute that would bring a tear to the eye of the crustiest Marine Drill instructor. At 6ft 4, he somewhat loomed over the supine Captain, the effect added to by his muscular build, high and tight haircut, and general air of someone that could quite comfortably lift both the couch and it’s occupant without breaking much of a sweat.

“At ease, Dawson,” Grayson said and closed his book, placing it behind him on the side table. “How was your flight in? Any issues? I see you haven’t dropped your kit in your quarters yet, travelling light are you?” If the Captain was at all awed by the physical presence of the man, he didn’t show it. Indeed, in a galaxy with ten foot Gorn and Klingons that longed for nothing but a good fight, a Human was a Human.

Dawson’s posture relaxed perceptibly. You could take the boy out of the Marines but....

“No issues at all on the way in, Sir.” Kell prodded the kit bag with his booted toe. A metallic clank sounded within as something shifted

“Just some of my kit Sir, I’ve just found that everyone ignores anyone wandering around carrying something that looks like they know where they are going. Gave me the chance to observe some of the crew and cadets without them being aware.”
