“I’ve been here about a half-hour, sir, so the Challenger has been good to me so far.” Taya’s stomach was fluttering, so she appreciated that Rodier was trying to help her feel at ease.Cadet Taya Lenwa - Security
Henry shook his head very slightly, a mark of disappointment in himself. Should’ve checked her file for when she was landing, he thought. But no matter now. “Of course. I hope she lives up to your expectations of the Fleet. Which brings me to my first real question: why did you join Starfleet? Someone, something, or some combo of the two?”

Taya didn’t expect that question. At the academy, each cadet was asked, but she thought she was past that. She supposed Lieutenant Rodier was simply curious.
“Back home, I didn’t fit in,” said Taya. “My father encouraged me to join, because in Starfleet, he understood I’d find my place, my purpose. He was right.” She hoped that explanation would do.

Henry gave an appreciate nod as she spoke. “Smart man. I’ve met many a different personality here. I myself felt a bit left out back home - mom always doing that engineery stuff.” A grin, followed by one hand reaching for a cup sitting to his right. “So, Starfleet, all set and good. Why Security? What brought you here?” He brought the cup up to his mouth and took two long sips as she responded.

After years of being examined by doctors and counseled by counselors, Taya didn’t like talking about herself and telling the same story over again. She supposed she couldn’t blame people for being curious about her, but it had become tiresome nonetheless.
“As a result of not fitting in, I occasionally got involved in fights. I decided I’d put those experiences to good use in Starfleet,” said Taya. “Besides, I wasn’t any good in engineering.”

Henry took care not to react to her comment about getting into fights, though he did pick up the PADD sitting to his left and tap a few keys. “Ah, I feel you there. But perks of being in the senior staff, I can just get some engineers to do stuff for me.” One eye twitched in what could be perceived as a wink.
“Now, I don’t want to make you feel like you’re being put on trial here, I truly just like getting to know my cadets. So you wanted to apply your experiences. Now you’re here. What can you contribute? We’re all on the same team, but what do you think makes you a unique asset?”

Taya glanced at the PADD in Rodier’s hand. “I’m sure you’ve read my basic file, sir, so you know I don’t have telepathic abilities. When you’re a psi null in an openly telepathic society, you learn to adapt and grow in other ways. I have a resolve, an inner strength I never would have had. I believe that makes me unique.”

“Indeed I have, but I make a habit of not paying too much attention to anything in my officers’ files unless I think it could be helpful or dangerous. I find it better to let people show me who they are. Words can be misconstrued - my eyes can’t.” He allowed that to sit for a moment before continuing. “That strength will help you go far in your time here. Which brings me here.” Rodier leaned forward, his hands coming together as he leaned across his desk. “Where do you see yourself in five years? Where do you want to be?”

Taya didn’t expect that question. During time with her friends, they would talk about their long-range plans and goals, being a captain of a starship or maybe becoming an admiral. No one said anything about five years after graduation when they were still so young. She had to ponder for a few moments.
“Well, sir, on whatever ship I’m assigned, I can see myself being the chief of security and tactical. Maybe that’s too young for that position, but at this time, right now, I know I could do it.”

OOC: You’ll see I just deleted some of the posts from far back to keep the thread from getting too long. That’s called snipping it, and it’s marked by the little <snip> that I added.

Henry responded with what could only be a genuine laugh. “I should hope it’s not too young - otherwise I’m out of a job! I said something similar to my old Chief. Anything’s possible, Cadet. Just keep your head up and ask for help when you need it.” He brought himself back up to a more stiff posture, hands clasped in front of him. “Well, I think that’s just about all I need to know - the floor is yours. Any questions for me? Anything in particular you’d like to work on in your time here, or just general stuff you’d like to know?”~ Lt. jr. gr. Rodier - CoS
“Well, sir, I suppose I just want to start my general duties,” said Taya. She glanced at her travel bag. “After I get settled in, of course. I’ve studied the Challenger specs and layout and I’m ready to go.”
Cadet Taya Lenwa - Security
“Sounds like a plan. Get settled in and I’ll get you to work after you get a good night’s rest.” He stood, bringing himself up to his full height, which lent a decidedly downward view of Taya. “My comm’s always open if you have any questions or requests.”

Taya stood. “Thank you, sir. I won’t hesitate to ask or request.” She smiled. “I’m not shy about that.”

Henry returned the smile. “Good to hear. If there’s nothing else, you’re dismissed. I’d suggest you head to the medbay for that ever-present required checkup.”
OOC: Great job! I’ll try to get a Side Sim up and running for you some time Monday or Tuesday.
