=^= Cadet, concentrate on making sure the computer core is stable and secure. Priority is to get shields up and running, just in case those asteroids try to come after us again.=^=

Shortly afterwards Grayson and Dr Frankenstein arrived on the Bridge, escorted by the Security team that had met them. Stepping forwards to the center, he nodded to the XO. “Commander Foley, I am Captain Rhodes and this is Lieutenant Daphne Frankenstein, the Challengers new CMO. It looks like you have had a bit of trouble, our shuttle certainly did. I’m not supposed to take over the ship until we reach Earth, but I am here to help.”

Captain Rhodes, CO

“I’m just glad that we were able to come to your rescue, as much as we could manage,” Aaron said with a chuckle. “I had hoped to have present you with a whole ship Captain, but unfortunately she is definitely showing some wear and tear. But welcome to the Challenger Captain, Lieutenant.

“We are just glad to be here, believe me. It was a close thing.” Gray said, with his own grin in return.

“Lt. Frankenstein, we could use your assistance in sickbay if you are ready to jump in and get your hands dirty. Captain…” Aaron hesitated. This is where it got a little tricky when it came to protocol. The Captain had received orders to take command of the ship, but it was for when they reached Earth. Until then he was temporarily in command. But at the same time, it was already known that it was only a matter of technicalities in the orders at this point.

Aaron took a deep breath. “I’ll leave it to your discretion sir. I’ve not had a chance to familiarize myself with your background yet, I figured I still had a little time.”

Cmdr. Foley - XO

“Commander at this point you know your ship and more importantly, your crew, better than I do. I defer to your judgement unless that judgement involves putting photon torpedo’s into the next ship we see. Once we are out of this little crisis and get a beer or two squared away, we can double up on formalities.” Grayson nodded to the Captains seat and stepped aside to one of the Engineering consoles. “I did my time as an Engineer, I may be of more use at the moment in that capacity and I’ll check in on the crew in sick-bay as well soon.”

Looking at the CMO, Gray smiled. “You know your way or would you like an escort?”

“Well that might be a little hard as I think the torpedo launchers are still off line,” Aaron said with a slight chuckle. Nodding to the Captain he stepped back towards the center of the bridge.

“Captain, Lieutenant Stadi is our Chief Engineer. He was trapped in the Battle Bridge when the section he was in was suddenly exposed to vacuum. He sent an engineering team headed by Cadet Onovren to the computer core. They are working on getting the computer core in a state where we can get our shields back online.”

Slowly the ops station noted various systems restarting and coming back on line.

“He’s doing good work,” Grayson noted. “How about casualties? Did we lose anyone and is the sickbay secure?”

=/\=Onovren to bridge, Ensign Tender has restored power and gravity in the core and we are beginning our work. We can have this done in an hour.=/\=

Aaron let out a sigh of relief, the last thing he needed was the ship to fall apart more while their new Captain was standing right next to him.

“Right after we got hit I had Lt Rodier start a sweep with his security teams from top to bottom of the ship to get a count on the crew,” Aaron said turning back towards the Captain.

“Lt Rodier. Where are we with the head count?”

Henry turned from his station to face the Commander, also stealing a glance at his new Captain. A strong face, he thought. But not without kindness.

“Teams are just finishing their sweeps, sir,” he replied, not bothering to note that he’d begun the sweep before he’d been ordered to. “I’ve so far gotten word of four confirmed casualties, with many more injured.” Noting Grayson’s other question, he added, “Sickbay was undamaged, but I expect they’re working near capacity.”

Aaron silently cursed, that was 4 to many casualties in his mind. Why had the field not been picked up on sensors, he wondered. But for now it was something they would have to investigate after they got free.

“Thank you Lieutenant. Report in once your teams have finished their sweep.

“Helm, how far have we moved? Lt Williams, how is your modified deflector holding up?”

Quickly looking at the science station’s screen, Aaron didn’t see anything abnormal in the data stream. As if it was working normally, the deflector was repulsing the asteroids without any struggle, and the ship was moving on steadily.

“The deflector is effective and still functional, sir”, Aaron replied. “We might bring the deflector parameter back to the normal when we go out of the field if we want it to work like before, but it won’t be a problem.”
