1400 Hours on the Challenger and Captain Rhodes stood in the middle of the ships Lounge that he had booked for one of the more special functions that would be held aboard his ship. This day was always special, and he hummed a tune to himself as he inspected the small stage where a live band sometimes played, but at other times was used for the celebration of the next round of Starfleet Cadets that were about to step out into the big Galaxy that lay before them.

To one side, snacks and refreshments were laid out. Non alcoholic of course, seeing as they were all technically on duty and in uniform, for the time being at least. Now, all that needed to happen was the arrival of the senior members of the crew, any DH’s or Cadets that wished to attend, and the focus of this Graduation ceremony. Looking over the small bar, Gray picked up a bottle and poured himself a ginger beer. Closest thing to the real thing available, after all. Looking at the glass, he noticed a stray thread on his cuff of his dress uniform and absently picked at it.

Captain Grayson Rhodes, CO

Alex stepped in to the lounge, glancing around to see who had arrived so far. Spotting the Captain, he hastily tucked away the PaDD he had been using to catch up on the usual never ending stream of medical notes and pretended to inspect the various drinks on offer.

Stifling a yawn that threatened to break out, Alex poured himself as large a cup of black coffee that he could get away with. He hadn’t gotten a great deal of sleep the night before and it was starting to catch up with him.

Cadet Alex McCall, MD

“Tired there, Doc?” Grayson smiled and noted the yawn and the coffee. “Late night?”

“Oh, you know, medical notes to catch up, journals to read, new treatments to evaluate…” Said Alex vaguely, pulling out his PaDD and giving it a vague wave.

“The Doctors work is never done.”

Rhodes, CO

Dael made his way down the corridors fidgeting in his dress uniform. He was unused to wearing it, even at the last few of these ceremonies he’d had a bad habit of working on some project or repair till the last minute and settled for showing up in his regular uniform. At least he had tried to get the wrinkles and engine gunk off of it before showing up those times. This time though, he had a wrinkle free (and way too over starched in his opinion) dress uniform on, since one of his team was the focus of today’s ceremony. Not that he valued any of the others less, but when you mentor a certain individual and then see them succeed, well, it makes you want to put in the extra effort. Though as Dael pulled on the tight collar of the uniform, he started to doubt whether that was in fact true.

Stepping in to the lounge, he noticed the new Captain speaking to a medical cadet he didn’t recognize. So many new faces on the ship, even more so than normal on an Academy ship. So many new waves of thought to get adjusted to. Those waves were starting to intrude a bit inside his head, so instead he placed his focus on the snack and drink table. He picked up what he assumed was a slice of some species’ cheese equivalent and popped it in his mouth. Turned out it was actually more of a fruit. Not an unpleasant taste, but when you expected cheese it took a second to get adjusted. Coughing for moment, he grabbed a pitcher and poured the contents into a glass, not quite sure what anything was, but it would help wash down the “cheese” fruit. He took a chance at it being maybe a cider, with any luck maybe some tea. Taking a quick sip (and a sigh at relief that it was in fact what he expected it to be) the Betazoid stepped over to the Captain and the doctor.

“Evening, Captain, Doctor. Hope the Challenger’s been treating you well.”

-Lt. jg Dael Stadi, CE

Vanessa stepped through the doors into Nine Forward, blue eyes scanning the room. The excitement was palpable, and she couldn’t help but smile. She normally wore her hair up, but it cascaded about her shoulders for today’s event, setting off white of the dress uniform. She spotted the small congregation near the stage and swung by the food assortment on her way there. She eyed the fruit assortment, but decided on a ginger beer as she saw the captain holding.

“I always love these events,” she said as she approached, smiling at everyone.

CNS Lofton

“Agreed, though I do always have mixed feelings about them. They mean success for our crew and the Fleet’s gain, but they also tend to mean I lose a valuable member of my team.” Dael replied with a grin.

Daphne walked into the room and looked around seeing some familiar faces and some less-than-familiar ones. In her line of work, it was a toss-up. If you didn’t see someone or make a personal relationship that wasn’t altogether a bad thing. It meant your ship was filled with people healthy and strong. It also meant, however, one was placed in the situation where everyone seemed to know your name and you had no clue who some people were.

Moving into the room, she looked around at everyone resisting the urge to tug at necklines and stifle the fidgets from uniforms starched so heavy, they could probably stand up without a person inside of them. Lucky for her though, she was a female which meant she had the option of skipping the crisp seamed slacks. As with her normal uniform, Daphne wore the skirt and high boot option. Scoping out the room, she found her cadets mingling along with the Captain and engineering chief. Grabbing a glass of wine from a passing tray, she moved over to the group of individuals waiting like all the rest for a chance to congratulate the graduate.

“Hello everyone,” she said smiling at each one in turn. “How are we all doing today?”

“Very well thank you,” Said Alex, although the bags under his eyes big enough to store loose change in told a slightly different story…..

Dael could feel the wave of exhaustion from the new medical cadet even if he wasn’t a Betazoid, but he decided to not comment on what other departments cadets did on their off hours. Too be fair it wasn’t like he’d never “burnt the midnight plasma” he was sure he’d heard one of his human crew members say once. He still wasn’t sure why one would burn plasma but the everyone seemed familiar with the expression.

“Doing as fine as these creaseless things will allow. I doubt I’d be able to roll up my sleeves for any work, the amount of starch this thing absorbs. Welcome to the ship, Doctor Frankenstein.”

“One of the joys of being a woman. You can move your legs in dress uniform,” she gestured down to her shirt. “I stopped wearing the pants due to everyone staring at me when I walked around the room.” Tossing her hair over her shoulder, Daphne raised her arms slightly and took a few stiff-legged steps letting out the characteristic moan of her namesake. She let out a chuckle and returned to her casual pose holding the glass of wine that still had not been touched. “It also stopped the whispers of how is uncle Drac which for the record I don’t have an uncle Vlad but,” she raised a finger, “the joke does get tossed around every time someone in the family finds out they are expecting a son.” It was clear Daphne took her name in stride and good humor.

“And thank you for the welcome. The ship is great. I wish I had had more time to get to know Onovern,” she said debating if she should put down the wine and get something she really wanted to drink.

Entering the room, Aaron notices the changes in the lounge’s arrangement. Replacing the usual small table were long ones, displaying various snacks and drinks from different origins. One would expect more decorations for what would seem to be a party, but graduation needed to be a bit formal. The crew will have time to celebrate afterward.
Looking around the place, Aaron saw the formation of a small group in the center, composed of familiar faces such as Dael and Vanessa, but mostly filled with new ones. Among them, the Captain, McCall the new medical cadet, and Dr. Frankestein, who had just arrived; all of them recently arrived on board the ship. The Lieutenant smiles, thinking of the old Challenger’s crew with a bit of nostalgia. Things are moving for sure, he thought, but they change for the better.

He approached the groups with a smile: “Hey everyone! Looks like it’s filling in slowly.”

Lieutenant JG Aaron Williams

“Hopefully not to slowly,” Aaron muttered as he stepped up to the group. He gently tugged at the collar of his dress uniform, he hated having to wear it. It was probably one of the things he liked the least about making the jump over to the command track. He was much more at home in a lab studying some new stellar phenomena. And he had been lucky enough in his previous postings that when studying deep space phenomena that there was hardly any chances of needing to break out the dress uniforms.

“Captain,” he said speaking up, before nodding to the assembled other crew members. “Have our guests of honor arrived yet?”

OOC: Fixing split

IC:
The mess hall doors hissed open and Kalos entered in a hurry, still in his regular yellow uniform. Kalos looked around and suddenly it dawned on him why he had been called to the lounge and requested to wear his dress uniform.
Approaching Captain Rhodes Kalos whispered “Sorry sir, I didn’t have time to change, I was crawling around in a Jeffries tube on deck ten trying to fix the EPS flow to auxiliary engineering.”

-Kalos Onovren, Engineer

Cadet Alexander McCall, MD

Thanks for that.

-Mason

Henry was one of the last senior officers to arrive, his dress reds stiff and shiny. The Chief’s position meant that he could realistically wear yellows, and in fact had received an odd look here and there for not doing so, but he found reds put him more on the level of other crew members. At times that could be a bad thing, since he did need to exercise a level of control, but a graduation ceremony should be all about the graduate, and his limited experience with Captain Rhodes did not point towards a reprimand for improper dress.

Rodier did not know soon-to-be-Ensign Onovren all that well, but he nonetheless had a huge smile on his face as he entered the room, nodding to his friends and acquaintances.

~ Lt. jr. gr. Rodier - CoS

Dael took in Kalos’ appearance as he entered just before the Chief of Security, and tried to suppress a smile. It seemed his cadet had swapped places with him for this graduation ceremony, trying to fit in a last minute repair. He’s going to do just fine in the main Fleet. he thought, bringing to mind how the cadet handled himself during their recent eventful return to Earth dry-dock. Being stuck on the Battle Bridge had left Dael unable to take as much of a lead as he’d like on repairs, but Kalos took the lead while Dael was isolated. It was always good to see a member of his team succeed, even if that meant losing them to graduation was around the corner. He walked over to where the cadet had muttered something to the Captain.

“Kalos! If the Captain will allow me,” he said with a nod to the new Captain before continuing, “I wanted to be the first to congratulate you on a job well done here on the Challenger. You’ve done some great work here.”
