Grayson’s hands calmly ran over the controls of the shuttle despite the sparks and emergency lighting making the small cabin almost as dim as the aether outside the shuttle. The trip to the Challenger had been going smoothly until they began to skirt the asteroid field, then something odd about the asteroids had invited disaster. Somehow asteroids had managed to strike the shuttle, bypassing both the ships shields and deflector and somehow only a miracle and prevented them from simply disintegrating on the spot, but the Geralt was in trouble.“Ahhhh,” Daphne let out a little yelp as an impossibly small chunk of rock bouncing off the shield made the shuttle shake like they had been caught by a boulder. “You know this is like being swept up in an avalanche while traveling in a tin can. You sure you gahhhh,” she brought her foot up to the console as if it were a vehicle instead of a shuttle to brace herself, “thissss.” For the hundredth time since she signed the dotted line of her transfer papers, Dr. Daphne Frankenstien was doubting her choice of leaving her prior assignment.
“You want the truth or do you want me to lie?” Gray asked her with a grin, as a flashing light started blinking faster on the console and he simply banged it with his fist. It returned to normal danger blinking speed.
The two occupants had somehow managed to pilot the small craft within spitting distance of the ship that was their destination, but from where they were it looked almost in as much need of help as they did. “Looks like they got hit by the same thing we did,” Graysons voice was steady and calm despite the circumstances, at complete odd’s with the large spark from the dying console overhead that forced him to pause slightly as he spoke. “Hopefully they still have power enough for tractor beams or transporters, I’m not sure I can hold us together much longer. Did you have any retirement plans Frankie?”
“Yeah and for the record it is freezing to death in Vermont, not in the middle of space,” she tried to look calm however her body language and the way she was holding one hand towards the wall, the other with a death grip on the armrest, and both feet planted on the console relayed no sense of faith or trust in the trip over. “Oh and just for the record…I can’t really bring people back with a jolt of electricity as my name suggests. Just saying so maybe call for a little help?”
“Yes, Master,” he replied with a very slight nasally lilt to his voice, so subtle it almost might not have been there. Switching on the comm, Gray sent a message to the Challenger ahead of them.
=/\= Challenger this is the Shuttle Geralt, we are in need of assistance. We’ve been hit by asteroids and are losing power, thrusters are damaged and control is erratic. I’m trapped with Dr Frankenstein, request a tractor beam to pull us into the Shuttle bay. =/\=
Captain Rhodes, CO
“You have been going with calling me Frankie the entire trip and now,” she stressed the word, “you decided to send a call indicating you are trapped with a monster. Not sure about you Rhodes,” she let out half a chuckle and shook her head.
Lt. Daphne Frankenstein MD
“I don’t blame you,” he sat back in the chair and waited for a reply from the Challenger, now and then adjusting the weird angle the shuttle was approaching on as the thrusters fired erratically sending the ship wobbling back and forth. “In fact if I were you, I’d insist on having a drink with me at the first opportunity after we get on the ship and things have settled down, you know, so you can figure me out better and so I can be sure my new CMO isn’t actually a monster or a shape changer or anything weird. I know I’ll be needing a drink after this. What’s your poison, you look like a Vodka kinda girl.” He had noted the way she was gripping the seat and bracing herself from the small impacts, and needed to get her to relax a little. That offer of a drink was far better than pointing out that if they were hit by anything that was going to do real damage and kill them, they wouldn’t have time to register that they were already dead. It was one reason his voice was able to remain calm despite his worry.

Reaching into her uniform pocket, Daphne pulled out a small flask and hastily unscrewed the top. Bringing it to her lips she took a large sip and then held it out to the side. “Tequila and don’t judge. It’s medicinal. I am like one of those St. Bernards with the keg strapped around her neck or in this case her left front pocket.” Nervously she continued to talk. “Now alcohol and freezing to death aren’t two things you actually want to combine but when you have a compound fracture of the tibia and are trapped on a mountain peak waiting rescue a little nip takes the edge off.” Pulling the flask to her lips she took another ship. “Kinda like now,” she let out a small laugh still holding the seat.

“We’ll be fine, trust me,” Grayson said as he realigned the drifting shuttle once more. “Besides if we aren’t all that will happen is we’ll shake for a bit and then explode. Gimme some of that,” he reached out and took the proffered flask, taking a small sip himself. “Don Julio 1942,” he nodded and handed back the flask. “That’s a good one, smooth.”
Captain Rhodes, CO
“A smooth ride would be better,” she let out a laugh and took another huge sip. The alcohol was warm and was doing the trick in taking the edge off her nerves. “So what’s the ETA to the ship,” she asked still bracing herself as the shuttle flew threw what she could only relate to as a sleet storm in a vehicle back home. The huge bangs and rattles were few and far between but the constant pings of the small pieces bouncing off the shield did remind her of home.

“Should be a few minutes…” Grayson began to say, and then the shuttle was bathed in an eerie blue light as the tractor beam from the Challenger hit them. But Grayson frowned.
“That beam isn’t at normal strength, they must be having power issues or something like it,” Another spark from a nearby console and a bang inside with them indicated that the stress from the tractor beam wasn’t doing good things to the shuttle though.
“Not sure that was normal either,” Daphne winced at the bang a squinted her eyes.
“Okaaaaayyyyyy,” Gray said in a slow, drawn out sigh. “Time to shut down power, let the ship pull us in. It’s about to get dark in here,” he looked at Daphne and smiled, trying to make it reassuring. “They got us.” Turning back to the console, Grayson shut down the power and said under his breath, “C’mon guys, don’t let me down.”
Seconds later, the power on the Challenger went out as he cut the shuttle small reactor, leaving only emergency battery power to life support and lighting.

Sitting in the dark, Daphne looked over at Grayson. “That is definitely not going to make the recruitment posters. C’mon guys, don’t let me down.” She repeated her words and let out a laugh.
“Well, they are Cadets,” Grayson explained and sat back in his chair, folding his ankle onto his knee in a very relaxed posture. “They may very well have Dorito fingers and might slip from ‘Pull’ to ‘Push’ when using that console.” He was joking of course, these Cadets were at the end of their four year training and were considered competent enough to be Officers in Starfleet.
“You are going to be able to fix that right? The problem with the ship. It is a cadet cruise. Book learning and real life are two very different things. You can spend all day learning how to deliver a baby but until you are in the middle of it with a woman grumpy and a father panicking....Just tell me you got this.”
Daphne D CMO
“Don’t worry, I got this Frankie.” He leaned forward and put his hand on her shoulder. “This is perfect for a Cadet cruise, throws something unexpected at them and gets them used to experiencing sudden changes in routine before they have to face the Borg or a Betazoid wedding party. Just relax, sit back and enjoy the ride. Pass me another swig of that flask too,” he grinned now. “I’m still off duty.”
Daphne did not hesitate when she passed the requested flask to what would be her new boss.
Minutes passed and they got closer and closer to the Challenger. Before being pulled into the Shuttle Bay by the tractor beam, Gray leaned forward and looked over the ship, assessing the ship visually for damage. “Well, it’s less damage than the Broadsword took when she fought against those space bugs out near Outpost 42. I think we can patch it.”
The shuttle passed into the bay, and as it did the internal tractor beams took over and maneuvered the shuttle onto the landing pad, dropping it gently into place with a light thud.
“Honey, We’re home!” Gray half called out as he rolled his shoulders to ease the tension he had felt, but hardly showed.
Captain Rhodes, CO
“Excellent. Dinner is in the oven. Wanna make us a cocktail before we eat.” Laughing, she looked at Rhodes. The man was easy on the eyes and had a great sense of humor. He was going to be easy to work with. Getting up from her seat, she made her way to the shuttle hatch waiting for it to open. “Dinner is at seven. Last one to the lounge has to do the dishes,” she laughed stepping onto the Challenger which would be her home for the next two years.
Daphne Frankenstien CMO
“A cocktail sounds like a darn good idea about now,” Gray muttered, looking at the dead consoles and then turning to watch Daphne head out Into the shuttle bay, before standing up and adjusting his uniform to make his exit.
