Vanessa noted the smile and tucked that away in the back of her mind as she shifted the grip on her knee. “When you’re doing something in a group… what role do you tend to take? Are you more a take-charge person, or more of a go with the flow?”

“You know, that really depends on what I am doing in the group. With music, not really either. I play a lot of improvisational and jazz music, so no one person is really in charge. In my job as an engineer I am comfortable filling whatever role is required of me. So I guess you could say I am a go with the flow person, but sometimes going with the flow requires taking charge, if you know what I mean.”

Vanessa nodded before sipping her cocoa again. “Definitely. You have a lot of experience in the field that many of your fellow cadets - and fellow officers even - won’t have. You may find yourself in a leading role more often soon.”

She contemplated him for a moment before continuing. “You have a lot of experience already because of your time outside of Starfleet; what’s something you hope to learn or improve during your time here on Challenger?”

OOC: For those who may be unfamiliar with this, a bump is just a post that will keep a thread on the boards and visible to anyone that needs it. It can be easy to overlook a thread or post sometimes, especially when a main sim is really getting busy like ours is starting to. The default view of posts is a 7-day view, so I will generally bump at that point if awaiting a response, or sometimes less if the person I’m waiting on a response from has a shorter AWOL limit. It’s just a small reminder that someone is waiting on a response.

OOC: Hey, don’t even worry about it. That’s what I figured, and it’s something we’ve all done/had happen. That’s what the bump is for!

“I have a lot of experience in engineering but not field engineering and I hope to learn how things work in the field, kind of like the difference between a physician and a medic. I know how the things work but I haven’t had much experience poking around in the very specific ship systems.”

Vanessa nodded along as Kalos answered, then smiled at the end. “That’s something I think Lieutenant Stadi will definitely help with. He loves to get his hands dirty.” She sipped her cocoa again, using the brief pause to run through more thoughts.

“Okay, on the other end of the spectrum - what is something you think your experience will bring to the fleet?”

These questions were the very typical “strengths and weaknesses” questions people were used to, but Vanessa had found, through experience, that couching them in these terms usually provided better answers, and often far more insight into her patients than the standard, very tired, phrasing.
