The records indicated that there were several cases of food poisonings on Federation star ships over the years, all with various and unpredictable effects. Most just resulted in the usual food born illness symptoms but some were more exotic including one that fermented carbohydrates in the body turning people into walking breweries. It was likely, or at least possible, that this illness was related to that.

Miya stared at the LCARS screen where the results of her search had been displayed. Prophets - is this it? Some of the symptoms seem to match, but I won’t know more until I can test a sample of grapok sauce! She itched to check up with Rodier, but the lieutenant hadn’t been gone for long; instead, she decided to update the Captain and XO to keep them both informed. She’d last spoken to them just before Chekhov’s unexpected attack - though, to be fair to the ensign, he wasn’t entirely responsible for his actions.

The Bajoran tapped her commbadge. =^= Ven to Bridge. We may have identified a potential cause of the illness, Captain, but we won’t know for sure until we can test the grapok sauce that seems to be at the heart of this outbreak. Lieutenant Rodier and Ensign Schmilblick are searching for it now. I’ll update you again when we have more information. =^= Again, she kept the comm open in case anyone wanted to respond.

=/\= Thank you for the good news, Doctor. Keep me informed. How are the patients doing? =/\=

Miya glanced at the biobed readouts and sighed to herself before activating her commbadge. =^= The conditions of the two ensigns in Sickbay are deteriorating slowly, Captain. We’ve managed to stablise them for now, but I’m concerned about their long-term prospects. I’m waiting to hear from the staff who are dealing with patients in other areas of the ship - I’ll let you know as soon as I have reports from them. =^=

=/\= Keep me informed, Doctor. =/\=

Some moments pass…
=^= Rodier to Ven. We’ve located a sample of Grapok sauce - retrieving now. =^=

OOC: Why thank you!

~ Lt. jr. gr. Rodier - CoS

=^= That’s excellent! Take all necessary precautions, please. We’ll have a team waiting to secure the sample - Ven out! =^=

Thrilled by Rodier’s message, Miya hurried off to alert the remaining Sickbay staff to the incoming officers. A quarantine area, protected by forcefields, was set up near a neutron microscope and equipment laid out for the tests that would be needed to examine whether grapok sauce truly was the cause of the mysterious illness. Miya, now wearing protective gear like the other staff, waited intently for Rodier and the ensign to arrive. She seized the moment of calm to contact the cadets and ensigns who were scattered to different parts of the ship dealing with sick crew members.

=^= Ven here - report, please. What condition are your patients in? =^=

OOC: I don’t want to rush any replies, but also didn’t want to hold up the sim for anyone. Feel free to wait to respond to this and/or move it down as necessary :)

IC:
A couple of minutes passed before Henry arrived back in Sickbay, his NE partner in toe. One hand was wrapped in what appeared to be some sort of towel or bandage, and it clutched a small flask of brownish liquid. Walking very slowly into the room, he said, “Anyone order some poison?” His reddish cheeks indicated a certain level of satisfaction, but no smile entered his face. A small joke in a serious situation could be good, but the declined vitals on the monitors in the back of the room made clear to the Chief that the situation itself was no joke.

He could only hope he’d been quick enough this time.

(OOC: That’s not a problem! When Javal replies, we’ll just head back up to Miya’s previous comm message and keep the RP going there. The joys of fuzzy time! Again, with a view to keeping the sim going, I hope you don’t mind if I gloss over the actual transfer of the grapok sauce?)

Wrapped in full personal protective equipment, her heart thudding at the seriousness of the situation, Miya held out a metal bowl for Rodier to place the innocuous-looking container. “Thank you - both of you,” she said, deep sincerity in her voice. “Hopefully this’ll help us work out what’s happening to them.” She spared a second to glance at the two ensigns, sedated and restrained on the biobeds, before returning her attention to the waiting Nurse Cadell.

“Please examine the Lieutenant and the Ensign to make sure they haven’t been contaminated in any way.” And, as the nurse raised her medical tricorder to begin the examination, Miya gave the ghost of a wink to Rodier, then turned to make her way to the neutron microscope.

The quarantine field fizzled into place behind her as she started to prepare a sample of grapok sauce for testing. Though she’d done this hundreds of times during her medical training, she had to take a deep breath and will her hands to stop shaking. Prophets, help me be calm! There are lives at risk! she prayed silently as she fed the sample into the neutron microscope, then sealed the remaining sauce into a secure container to keep it safe. Decontaminating her gloved hands, she returned to the scope to wait for the results to appear.
