Korczak then finalized the preparations for the first ever Cadet Welcome Lunch and Introduction.

Max hadn’t really thought of the welcome lunch until he noticed that some of his fellow cadets were making their way to the lounge mid-shift.

“What’s going on?” he asked a fellow blue shirted cadet as he passed the small gaggle as it exited sickbay.

“Welcome lunch for all cadets,” offered the cadet before being distracted back into group conversation. Max briefly considered his next move. His intention had been to simply lunch back in his quarters as he had every day since arriving on board. At the same time, he also had met very few people on the Challenger thus far. He followed the group and made his way to the lounge. Walking through the doors he took note of his surroundings.

Having grown up on a farm, he didn’t always like the big group meetings, but also knew that they were a good time to network. In the end, it was possible that some of the other cadets here could be people he is going to be serving with when he finished his training.

He put down a PaDD in his quarters as he heard the announcement from the counsellor, and made his way towards the lounge.

IC: Korczack smiled as the Cadets trickled in. The tables had been set, and seats were ready and available to all. As the last few came in Korczak, from his position at the head table, tapped his glass and stood up.

“I would like to thank you all for coming. I am Lieutenant Commander Janusz Korczak, the ship’s Counselor. I know your schedules are quite busy, but I wanted to take a moment to welcome you all aboard the Challenger. The staff and I are at your disposal to assist you in transitioning from Cadet to full-fledged Starfleet Officers, and we are proud to have that opportunity. But for now, please sit back, relax, and have a nice lunch. I will be coming around and if you have any questions, please feel free to stop me or any of the other officers and ask. Again… Welcome Aboard.” and he raised his glass in a toast.

Max raised his glass before taking a sip. He smiled a bit as he glanced around at the room filled with the ship’s officers and his fellow cadets. He glanced around for a familiar face only to realize that many of them were, indeed, familiar. He then began contemplating where he might find a social opening given that a fair number of people in the room were known to him because he had done their physicals and that might not provide the cleanest segue into casual conversation.

Max did take this moment to allow the counselor’s words to fully sink in. Their transition from cadet to full-fledged Starfleet Officers. He glanced out the window to the vastness of space as he contemplated how quickly time seems to have passed from his first day at Academy medical school to the present. Before too long he would be out in the fleet and his Academy days would be over. Still, he didn’t want this reflection to cause him to miss out on a very pleasant moment. Setting his empty glass down he fought against his most basic social urges and joined a circle of socializing cadets.
