Minutes had passed since Tom reported to the Department Head. He decided to check the medical first. The office wasn’t far from his current location. “Cadet Tom Little reporting for medical evaluation.” He again stood outside in attention. He was assure he had no problem with meeting the physical standard. He checked his dental status and overall evaluation in a civilian facility before arrival, but he was uncertain of the Star Fleet standard. Even though he was accepted as a scientist, this life style would have given him a full of unknown ahead. He wondered if he could stay healthy and back in one piece after this unusual assignment.

Can I just check - will the information in your bio be replicated in your medical records? I want to be sure that Miya is accessing the correct information so she can react appropriately. Miya was engaged in some extremely boring administrative tasks when a man’s voice rang out. Eager for distraction, she glanced up at the stiffly braced cadet standing in the doorway to sickbay and smiled, beckoning him into the room.

“Hello there! I’m Cadet Ven Miya, one of the doctors.” Saving the admin with a couple of taps on her PADD, she walked towards the newcomer. “So you’re new on board the Challenger, then? Take a seat on this biobed,” she patted it to indicate which one she was talking about, “and I’ll start your medical check-in. The examination is nothing to worry about - as long as everything ties up with your Academy records, you’ll be on to your next appointment quickly.” She’d found that a little reassurance never went amiss. Although she was now used to conducting these examinations, it was normally the first time that cadets had been through an onboarding medical and some could feel nervous.

While she was waiting for the cadet to get onto the bed, Miya used her PADD to call up the all-important records. “Cadet Tom Little, yes? From the Science Department?” she added with a quick smile, just to check she was accessing the correct files.

“Yes, Ma’am.” Tom replied and then asked, “May I address you as Doctor?” The young medical cadet reminded him of the 1st day entering the Academy. He had to get used to addressing senior cadets, of similar ages as Sirs or Ma’ams. At least she wasn’t yelling at him yet. He speculated that either the ship was understaffed or this was part of the training for her. He thought he might be doing that someday at the last part of this ship assignment in the Science Department.

The moment he walked in, he already felt uncomfortable and it had nothing to do with the freshman attitude, nor the Doctor. He had spent too long in a facility like this in the past and it doesn’t bring back any good memories. As he lied on the bed, he hoped this check-up would end soon.
