Washburne was out the door before he finished speaking into the comm. No rest for Starfleet he thought.

Dael noticed Washburne enter Engineering out of the corner of his eye and looked up from his diagrams.

“Cadet, looks like we’ve got an assignment from the higher ups. Looks like a colony is needing an evac, and they’ve given us the pleasure of being their ride. We’re looking at around 385 colonists. I’m thinking of using Cargo Bays 1 and 2 on Deck 6 as the place to put them, giving them access to Sickbay and potential overflow to either the mess or shuttlebay there.” Dael pulled the schematics he had been looking at on his console onto the larger screen in Engineering. He pointed towards the areas he was describing as he continued. “We’ll have to make accommodations for these people, moving our storage from these areas to the other cargo bays, but I think we can make it work. My biggest concern right now is making sure they have some sort of livable area, I’m thinking looking in our storage for or replicating some basic structures so they have a place to sleep and have privacy. I don’t know how long we’ll have them here for. I’m assigning NE Burton and NE Doohan with carrying that out.”

Dael gave a nod to those two members of his team, both of which gave a similar response before breaking off to work on their assigned task. He turned back to Washburne. “The reason I called you down here Cadet is because I know you have a background with transporters technology and theory. We’re looking at a high capacity situation and while I haven’t heard it as a fact, they may need to get off that planet in a hurry. We should at least try to have a plan ready, because believe me, complications like that come up all the time. It’s our job to prepare for them, and I want to hear what your suggestions and ideas are to prepare our systems.”

Connor mentally logged every detail the Lt. gave him. He knew very well that the smallest piece of information could make a world of difference. He was caught slightly off guard when the Beta-zoid asked for his suggestions. He had fully expected to just be given orders like the other engineers had been. Focus on the task at hand he thought, shaking it off.

“Yes Sir. I’ve been researching the benefits of relaying persons through transporters in the event of an emergency. Normally with mass emergency beaming there’s an inherent risk, because you have to choose between rematerializing them all at once which tasks the system and can be dangerous, or rematerializing them in groups which takes time. But if we link the transporters together two and two, we can mass beam up two large groups at a time, and rematerialize them in smaller groups at the relay transporter. The down side is it is going to draw a significant amount of power, so I would not recommend doing it if we can afford not to.”

The cadet finished explaining and stood ready to carry out whatever orders he would be given.

Dael listened to the cadet’s suggestions, running through the various scenarios in his head. “Good, so instead of having our four transporter rooms individually taking up groups, you’re looking at using them as one giant transporter for a higher load. It could work, but I do see the power draw being an issue. That and making sure we don’t lose anyone in such a mass transport.”
He gave the situation some more thought before adding. “I agree, I think it’s a little risky so we should have it on standby if the situation calls for it. I’m going to make sure we have pattern enhancers ready to set up if the colony’s situation allows for it as well. Get it done, I’ll be here in case you need any support. Just make sure it won’t overload the phase transition coils, we don’t want to lose our transporters and have to do the evac all by shuttle because we overdid it.”

“Understood Sir.” The cadet hurried off to begin his work. He had never done practiced this, but he understood the fundamental ideas behind it and felt confident he could accomplish it.
