Miya took a deep breath. She’d been wanting to ask this ever since arriving outside the counsellor’s door! “What would you recommend are my next steps towards becoming a counsellor, Vanessa? Not just what courses or training I should take, but are there any other preparations I can make which would make me a better candidate to be one? And related to that .... could I possibly shadow you some time, please? I don’t mean sit in on any confidential discussions, obviously, but just to find out what’s involved in being a counsellor.” She quirked her lips in a small smile. “There’s only so much you can learn from training manuals and role descriptions - not to mention taking part in sessions like this, of course.”

Vanessa grinned, shaking her head. “You should be eligible to take the licensing exam with the courses you’ve already taken. After that, it’s a request to change your occupational specialty with Command. They’ll look for a recommendation, which I’ll be glad to provide - after you shadow me,” she added, her grin broadening to a smile. “That would include you monitoring a few of my patient sessions, and me observing you doing some of your own. Those may be remote monitoring, depending on the patient.”

“So that one was easy!” she continued, laughing. “What other questions do you have?”

(OOC: thank you! Sorry for the delay replying - it’s been a hectic couple of weeks and time drifted by before I realised I’d gone AWOL. Apologies!)

“Really? I can take the exam already?” Miya was delighted; even though she’d known she was nearing that stage, having it confirmed by Vanessa made it seem more real. Another step on her long road to achieving her ambition and fulfilling the Prophets’ wishes! Her parents would be so happy when they found out! “Thanks for saying I can shadow you. I really appreciate that and I will take you up on the offer, as soon as I’ve adjusted to life aboard the Challenger. I owe it to Lieutenant T’Saie to get settled into working in sickbay before I try to change specialisms.”

Vanessa’s enthusiasm was infectious; Miya’s grin matched the counsellor’s as she shrugged her shoulders, trying to think of something else to ask. “I honestly don’t know what other questions I have - you’ve just answered my biggest ones, to be honest, I can’t think of anything else ..... oh, wait!” A mischievous look passed across her face. “When I was looking at Challenger’s specs - just to help me find my way around, you know - I spotted a room where the Executive Officer apparently has a hot tub. Lieutenant T’Saie said she hasn’t seen it. Is there really a hot tub on board or is it just a joke to tease nosy Cadets?”
