Mia gasped as the hum of a transporter beam faded, revealing a female ensign lying on the sickbay floor. The accompanying comm message made her frown - as far as she was concerned, it was too flippant for such a potentially serious situation. “Work on your transporter technique - the bed’s not that hard to find!” she muttered to herself, annoyed.

As Lieutenant T’saie ordered the cadets to pick up the patient, Miya replied, “Yes, sir!” and approached the injured ensign. She carried out a quick risk assessment, controlling a wince when she noticed the position of the patient’s ankle. Looks like a nasty break there. The sooner we get her on a diagnostic bed, the better, but moving her is likely to hurt ....

“Lieutenant?” Miya turned towards T’saie, keeping her voice low. “Sir, could we offer the patient some pain relief before moving her? That ankle looks pretty unstable to me.”

OOC: This is something that happens not infrequently, and you handled it exactly right.

This is what we call a split thread: two people reply to the same post, instead of one to the other. It can happen exactly as happened here, where two people were writing posts at the same time. Sometimes it can happen because someone just gets excited and replies before they’ve reached the end of a thread.

The solution is exactly what Claire did here - copy the other reply into a new reply, so everything is in one thread. We call this fixing the split. If you see someone else has split the thread accidentally, but hasn’t noticed, you can copy their reply into the thread yourself to fix the split.

Split threads like this can cause complications because it can become unclear who has replied to whom in-character, what happens when, etc. Usually, if there’s a reason to no longer have some sets of people interacting with each other, it’s best to actually change the Topic/Location field so that it is in its own separate thread.
